5. Warm Up: Beach Scene

I’m trying to do some warm up drawings and messing with different styles and brushes, papers, etc.

This is a simple line-art drawing, digitally drawn, without working off a rough. I used Painter 11, with the paper set so it has some tooth. When I use a pencil, I usually use the “grainy cover pencil”, which will cover any colors used underneath the it’s layer, as well as pick up on the grainy texture of the paper. If you work digitally, you know you can control the amount of grain with some of your tools. Painter’s digital watercolors are underneath the line work. I like to use them quick and fast. I don’t like things to look tight, so I’m fighting that ALL the time when I work. And finally, I will sometimes double up the line work and/or color layers, depending on how bold I want things to be. In this case, I went for bold.

7. Today was like summer

After a whole lot of rain and cold weather, today turned out to be quite hot—87°! I knew the kids would want to swim. They swear the pool is just right. Of course, they jump out as fast as in. The blue lips are another clue, though they deny they're cold.

They've been busy growing all winter, so we had to quickly buy some shorts and swimsuits.

No sure why this is so fun, but they do it every time.

This is Cody's go to spot when the boys swim. He's not fond of the water, however he was quick to join us outside when we started the BBQ. He's not so dumb.

I wish I could show you what I've been working on, but it's all hush hush. I hope to be back soon with something to share.

9. Swim Said The Mama Fishie

After reading Ginger's wonderful post this morning, I started thinking about the size of fish and what a really big pond it is out there!
I'm a little fish... but little frys grow by swimming with more experienced fish! So, I wanted to thank you all and tell you how happy I am to be invited to swim in your pond. I'll do my best to "just keep swimming!"

I didn't really intend to create a duck character, too - But there he is. Right now I'm just calling them "Duck n Dog" in my head.

13. When Pigs Swim...

Happy July to everybody. Here's my swimming pig, one of several illustrations for an educational picture book. This pig can do a lot but loves swimming the best.

14. Do you like Stephen King?

Starting with Carrie, I probably spent 20 years reading every Stephen King book I could get my hands on. I’m not as current now as I could be, but I like the guy a lot. And if you do, too, you should read this thought-provoking interview with him.

Or at least go get “On Writing,” if you are a writer.
