1. INTERVIEW: Bryan Lee O’Malley on His New “Cartoonish Soap Opera,” SNOTGIRL #1

SnotgirlBannerEarlier today, The Beat posted a review of Snotgirl #1, the latest book written by Seconds and Scott Pilgrim writer Bryan Lee O'Malley. Illustrated by Leslie Hung, the series focuses on Lottie Person, a prolific fashion blogger who is plagued by inner demons. Recently, The Beat had a unique opportunity to talk about Snotgirl #1 with O'Malley. 2. Telltale Games The Walking Dead Season 3 Trailer

unnamedOn Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles, Telltale joined IGN to reveal the world’s first sneak peek at the next season of ‘The Walking Dead’ series, set to premiere this fall. Here’s what Telltale had to say in their official release: Clem returns and will play a key role, but this is a new story as […]

3. Interview: Greg Rucka and Michael Lark on Lazarus and What Makes Them Click

Lazarus TeaseRucka and Lark have been one of my favorite pairings ever since the Half a Life arc in Gotham Central, and their work has only gotten stronger and more cohesive since that was first published. They’re now deep into their most ambitious collaboration to date, the Image Comics series Lazarus. With the freedom of creator-owned […]

4. INTERVIEW: Joe Casey talks Sex, his indie Officer Downe film and why comics are not like Van Halen

officer-downe  [Recently Joe Casey conducted an email interview with a writer for a now deceased site. I expressed an interest in running it on the Beat, but was unable to contact the original writer despite repeated attempts. As its general internet principle that the interviewee owns the written answers, I agreed to run Joe’s answers, as he’s […]

6. Image Expo: The Vibe On The Scene and What Connected

IMG_9130Held the day before Emerald City Comic Con, Image took their Image Expo on the road to The Showbox in Seattle for all the creator announcements of upcoming projects. The location was unique and perfect when you consider the many independent and up and coming bands that rolled through The Showbox in the past—plus how long Image has been associated with independent. The Showbox offered a sexy venue with lighting, chandeliers, and was already decorated for Image's Spring Formal later in the evening. Image Expo would offer many highlights and it was interesting to see when the audience connected most with the presentations during the day.

7. All the new titles from Image Expo with more art and quotes

201604070347.jpgWell that was a heck of a day for Image Expo. The return of the Batgirl of Burnside team with motorcycles, and of the award-winning Azzarello/Risso team with Moonshine were big, but the appearance of Karen Berger brought down Twitter, and I'm sure, the house in Seattle. Berger is a genuine comics legend, and while editing one book is just a smallish thing, just having her back on deck feels right somehow. It's worth noting that SURGEON X, the book she's editing, written by Sara Kenney, is funded by a grant from Society Award from Wellcome Trust; perhaps the charitable nature of the project helped lure her to the Image Expo stage.

OddlyNormal-Book1-Cover-hi-resOddly Normal marked a rare foray for Image Comics into the children’s book market, and it appears to have been a successful one. 17. The latest Eric Stephenson tells-it-like-it-is interview pokes “dull, “bland” industry

Image Comics publisher Eric Stephenson is always quotable and evidently not afraid of being quoted, as he often tweaks other publishers in a blunt way little seen in the industry. In a new interview with CBR’s Albert Ching he talks about Image Comics’ successful 2015 while calling other developments “dull.”: Stephenson notes that Image had […]

Renaissance woman Alex De Campi is not only a writer and director…she also letters her own comics and now she’s shown you how you can too! I am one of those rare writers who letter their own comic books. It started off, as so many things do, because we couldn’t afford a decent letterer. Then […]

23. MATT CHATS: Si Spurrier on Unleashing Monsters and Myth in ‘Cry Havoc’

Cry-Havoc-Header-Image-970x545Based on the first two issues I previewed, Si Spurrier with Ryan Kelly have crafted a captivating story about identifying the monsters inside and out. Cry Havoc, described as mixing “the hard-boiled militaria of Jarhead with the dark folklore of Pan’s Labyrinth,” is a fascinating piece of work, so I was excited to speak to […]
