1. The Guts

Jimmy Rabbitte from Doyle's earlier work The Commitments takes center stage in this warm and witty story about friendship, family, facing death, and following music. The aging musician is battling cancer but isn't about to give up on one, possibly last, project. Filled with rich and often comedic dialogue, this delightful story is "grand... just [...]

a novel by 10 authors

What a book. What a beautiful, thought-provoking book.

I will say that I didn't like the last two stories of the book, which was frustrating. All of the stories use metaphor and symbolism to varying degrees (some intentionally, some not) and I didn't care for the taste of the final two. I don't want that to discourage you from reading the book - the rest of the stories are wonderful, and perhaps you'll even enjoy them all.

It is a remarkable little book. On the surface, it contains ten stories; but there are stories within stories. It gives you this feel of depth and magnitude. Each story made me feel differently, and they all made me think. One even made me ache a little, it was so good.

This would be a great pick for a book club. There's loads of discussions in here waiting to happen. Oh - and it made me want to take up photography. Perhaps I will.

7. Cybils 2007 Young Adult Fiction Finalists

Mercilessly Cribbed from the Cybils blog:

Finding the best seven titles out of a list of 123 is... daunting, to say the least. The bloggers on this year's YA nominating panel embraced the challenge, and below you'll find the books that survived discussion and passionate debate through countless emails and one very long instant-message group chat. We're proud of our shortlist, and hope you love it as much as we do.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
by Sherman Alexie
Little, Brown
Meet Junior, a skinny, teenage Spokane Indian with hydrocephalus, ugly glasses and too many teeth. He knows that to make his dreams come true, he has to go where no one in his tribe has gone before--a white high school outside the reservation. Sherman Alexie's semi-autobiographical novel comes at you with its chin up and fists flying. You're guaranteed to fall in love with this scruffy underdog who fights off poverty and despair with goofy, self-deprecating humor and a heart the size of Montana.

21 Billie Standish Was Here
by Nancy Crocker

Summer 1968. Billie Standish is a young girl with a lot of heart and soul whose life is about to change forever when the rains come pouring down. Newly befriended by a neighbor, Miss Lydia, neither suspect how close danger lurks to young Billie--and it's not danger from the rising storm waters threatening the town's levee. Billie Standish is a story of friendship, courage, and devotion that will charm readers young and old as they fall in love with Billie's world.

Boy Toy
by Barry Lyga
Houghton Mifflin
Eighteen-year-old Josh Mendel can calculate batting averages and earned run averages in an instant, but coming to terms with his past has been impossible. Until, perhaps, now. Bypassing the tawdry and sensational, Barry Lyga takes a ripped-from-the-headlines plot (Teacher-Student Sex Scandal!) and explores the devastation it leaves behind. Told with intelligence and sensitivity, Boy Toy is a powerful story that may occasionally disturb, but ultimately captivate readers.

Offseason The Off Season
by Catherine Gilbert Murdock
Houghton Mifflin
Farm girl and football player D.J. Schwenk's refreshing voice and self-deprecating humor return in this continuation of her hilarious and occasionally heartbreaking coming-of-age story. Catherine Gilbert Murdock's characters are authentic and fully realized, and the story perfectly captures the rhythms and conventions of life in a small, rural town. D.J.'s straightforward and endearing personality shines as she faces up to everyday adversity and struggles to find her voice.

Tips Tips on Having a Gay (ex)Boyfriend
by Carrie Jones
Flux
Tips is in many ways a typical high school story--loves lost and won; navigating the social minefields of a small town; figuring out who you are, measured against the way others see you. It depicts a week in the life of Belle, a high school senior who's just been dumped by her "true love"--for another guy. Belle progresses through heartbreak to jealousy to anger, to genuine concern for Dylan (her ex), whose road will be much tougher than her own. And Belle's gradual realization that she and Dylan weren't meant to be opens her to new possibilities. Belle is a sweet and optimistic narrator with quirky but believable friends and family.

The Wednesday Wars
by Gary D. Schmidt
Clarion
Condemned to spend every Wednesday afternoon alone with a teacher he is sure hates him, Holling despairs. When two demon rats escape into the classroom walls, and Mrs. Barker brings out Shakespeare, Wednesdays seem to grow even worse. But despair has no place in this very funny and deeply moving book about 7th grade love, the Vietnam War, heroes, true friendship, and the power of giant rats.

All eight shortlists have now been announced. Head here to see the entire list of 2007's finalists. Finalists will be announced on February 14th.

I don't normal flog for sales (this blog brings me no money whatsoever), but by clicking on the links above (or on the Cybils blog, or on the widget you see to your left that is sprinkled throughout the kidlitosphere) and purchasing books, you are supporting the Cybils Award, proceeds which go toward this. If you're one of the 90-odd bloggers who participated in the award and would like something for yourself to commemorate the experience OR just really dig what we stand for, take a gander at the Cybils at Cafe Press. Volunteer your clever slogan ideas here.

On a personal note, it's been a joy to serve this year as a panelist, and as the YA Fiction Organizer (still amazed they let me do that...). Now that the bulk of my role is past, I look forward to blogging with at least a little more frequency. Assuming you all will still have me. ;)

10. Cybils Updates

I have now read 52 of the 123 titles nominated for Cybils in the Young Adult category. Of the 52, 45 have been reviewed. The seven titles not yet reviewed are: Diamonds In the Shadow, Remembering Raquel, Leaving Paradise, Billie Standish Was Here, Revenge of the Homecoming Queen, Dawn and Dusk, and Revolution Is Not A Dinner Party. There for a while, it looked like I would never get caught up. You might think being behind seven is not really "caught" up. But believe me, compared to the fourteen or sixteen it was a few days ago, it's close enough to cause me some cheer. :) Of course the frenzied reading is not nearly over. Not by a long shot.

13. Winter Reading Challenge

Some of you may be shaking your heads and thinking, "What on earth is Becky doing joining another challenge when she has so so so so so much to do????" My answer, well, I'm going to be reading these books anyway, I might as well lump them together and say they're challenge reads. (The challenge goes through February)

As some of you (or most of you) may know I'm involved in the Cybils. I'm on the nominating panel in the YA category. There are 123 books nominated. I've read about 42-44 somewhere in there. While, I don't see myself getting to all of them by the deadline. (Our top ten lists are due in just two weeks. And our big, big deadline is December 28th). I would like to read most of them whenever I can. So heavy in December, with a few coming in the later months perhaps. Some of these depend on whether publishers send review copies.

I will be trying to choose books ONLY from this list. Essentially, if the book isn't on this list, it isn't going to get read in the month of December. I might squeeze in a few picture books now and then. But if it's a novel, it has to be from this list.

16. Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew. EW.

"They promised me nine years of safety but only gave me three. Today my time has run out" (p 1).

Seriously? Seriously.

Now that I've flashed you back to the second season of Grey's Anatomy, isn't that a freakin' awesome first line? Doesn't it just make CHILLS run up your back? Doesn't it make you want to check on your young loved ones? I'm not normally a girl who enjoys (odd word choice) children-in-peril novels, but Laura Wiess' Such A Pretty Girl doesn't let up after that first riveting sentence. It's awful, and you know it's going to get worse, but THIS Meredith isn't going to let her father mess her up any more than he already has. THIS Meredith is going to make sure he doesn't hurt any other kids. THIS Meredith is going to fight back.

And it's going to be hard. Really hard.

It's the mother that actually seems the most cruel. She knows what happened, what is happening, what will happen, but she's so damaged and self-centered herself, that she refuses to admit the truth. Out of her selfish need, she places Mer in danger repeatedly and without remorse. It is ASTONISHING what "falls through the cracks" of a society that is supposed to protect. It's even ironically pointed out that Mer's father got out early due to good behavior. Which would be obvious, as there weren't any children to abuse in prison. Yes, altogether now, *gasp*

It's a fast-paced quick read. And while it lacks some subtlety, it possesses latent themes that come out in the last few chapters, cleverly connecting some elements throughout the book. I was intrigued by the religious subplot, but I didn't entirely buy it. It should be popular.

Regina Starace did the cover design. I think she captured the book with such simple, chilling elegance. Not to state the obvious or anything, but the state of the rose reflects Mer's state of mind, and the fact that roses play a small part of the book, well, it's always nice to see covers that show artists do read the book. Or are at least briefed well. ;)

I'm sure you can give this to the teen girls who like to torture themselves with titles like A Child Called It, but you can also hand this off to fans of Speak, Sarah Dessen, and definitely, The Rules of Survival. I'm sure you've got your own list of kid-in-peril books to add it to, so I'll stop there.

Real quick: I love MTV books. I'm astonished at the fact, but they are consistently, not only solidly written, but completely accessible for their audience. I've yet to read one that talks down, and they aren't overly commercialized as I would have assumed. I also like that they've gotten away from their cheap looking branding with this title. Especially due to the subject matter. That is all.

17. Your YA Cybils Nominations Thus Far:

Hurry now. You've just got until Wednesday, November 21st at midnight, Central Time, to get your favorite 2007 titles nominated for The Cybils. If you don't see your favorite 2007 title for Young Adults on the list, hightail thyself over to the category and nominate it! Take a look at the other categories while you're at it!

I've linked to nominating panelist reviews, or interviews, as I had them. By no means are they exhaustive, and please remember that one panelist's opinion or review will not reflect deliberations (deliberations that haven't even begun yet, I might add) of the group. I'll update this periodically, as more reviews - AND TITLES - come in!

18. Cybils: Nominations Close November 21. And Highlander!

I know what you're doing.

You have a few different books you want to nominate; but you know, much like Highlander, there can only be one. One nomination per category.

So, you're sitting back, waiting, hoping some of your favorites will be nominated by other people, so that you don't have to decide to pick one; rather, once 3 of your 4 titles are picked, you'll nominate that title.

I know your strategy. And it is sense making. As long as you don't wait too long and miss the deadline! November 21, people. It's closer than you think. Go to the Cybils blog; check the current nominees; and nominate your favorite title!

And because it has one of the best songs ever, a little You Tube for you.

And yes, we all loved Methos.

Oh, yeah. Topic. Go post your Cybils nominations today!

19. Cybil Nominating Time

Nominating season has officially started over at the Cybils blog. They are seeking nominations in eight categories:

Fantasy/Science Fiction
Fiction Picture Books
Graphic Novels
Middle Grade Fiction
Non-Fiction: Middle Grade and Young Adult
Non-Fiction Picture Books
Poetry
Young Adult Fiction

There are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, the book needs to be for children or young adults. Second, the book needs to have been published in 2007. Third, anyone--and they do mean anyone--can nominate a title. But only one nomination per person per category. So choose carefully! That being said. Nominations end November 21, 2007. And since you only get one per category, you might want to think on it a bit. [Also, I would advise reading the comments--nominations slowly--before adding in your own!!! Why nominate a book that is already nominated...when you could have dozens on your list of what is "worthy"?]

It's simple. Really. Go over to the Cybils blog. You can nominate one book per category. So, go to the category and leave your nomination (title and author, please!) in the comments section. Easy peasy!

OK, here, I'll make it even easier for you; here are the direct links to the category posts.

Press Release:

BOOK BLOGGERS KICK OFF KIDLIT AWARDS' SECOND YEARCHICAGO

Will Harry Potter triumph among critical bloggers? Will novels banned in some school districts find favor online?

With 90 volunteers poised to sift through hundreds of new books, the second annual Children's and Young Adult Bloggers' Literary Awards launches on Oct. 1 at http://www.cybils.com/. Known as the Cybils, it's the only literary contest that combines both the spontaneity of the Web with the thoughtful debate of a book club.

The public's invited to nominate books in eight categories, from picture books up to young adult fiction, so long as the book was first published in 2007 in English (bilingual books are okay too). Once nominations close on Nov. 21, the books go through two rounds of judging, first to select the finalists and then the winners, to be announced on Valentine's Day 2008.

Judges come from the burgeoning ranks of book bloggers in the cozy corner of the Internet called the kidlitosphere. They represent parents, homeschoolers, authors, illustrators, librarians and even teens.

The contest began last year after blogger Kelly Herold expressed dismay that while some literary awards were too snooty – rewarding books kids wouldseldom read – others were too populist and didn't acknowledge the breadth and depth of what's being published today.

"It didn't have to be Brussels sprouts versus gummy bears," said Anne Boles Levy, who started Cybils with Herold. "There are books that fill both needs, to be fun and profound."

Last year's awards prompted more than 480 nominations, and this year's contest will likely dwarf that. As with last year's awards, visitors to the Cybils blog can leave their nominations as comments. There is no nomination form, only the blog, to keep in the spirit of the blogosphere that started it all.

See you Oct. 1!

24. Cybil Announcements

Panels for the Cybils have just been announced. The posting started this afternoon. And I'm sure I wasn't the only one anxiously awaiting the news. To read the announcements for yourself, go to the official Cybils blog. I see familiar names (and blogs) on every panel in every category. And I really can't wait to see what this whole process is like. I was excited to follow the news last year, but I'm ecstatic to be a part of something this big :) (I am on the nominating panel in the YA division).
