I love Sally Murphy’s work. Her beautiful book ’Pearl Verses The World’ which won the Australian Family Therapist Award in 2010, is accompanied by ‘Toppling’ which was runner up to my ‘Always Jack’ this year. However as the award judge said, it was on a coin’s throw which book to select.
I love that my ‘Always Jack’ is in the company of Sally Murphy’s ‘Toppling’.
Both deal with cancer but in different ways. Both positive, sensitive, warm and loving. They make it safe for young people to talk about cancer.
‘Always Jack’ carries the Cancer Council’s yellow daffodil.
I am proud to be an Ambassador for The National Year of Reading.

It’s going to be a fabulous day with authors, from award winning to best sellers author – everything from books for boys to No to bullying to fantasy to reading for the future.
Keeping Books Alive day is supporting Young Australian Art & Writers as well with awards at the dinner.
There’re books signings, prizes, meet and greet with authors, storytelling and dinner with some of Australia’s loved authors – Gabrielle Wang, Dianne Bates, Michael Salmon, Phil Kettle, Meredith Costain, Paul Collins, Michael Panckridge …. and it’s intimate and fabulous.
It’s subsidized for the day at $110 which includes dinner, talks, cocktails and canapes in the beautiful RACV Melbourne. Near the railway station.
I’m in Melbourne to receive the Australian Family Therapists Award for ‘Always Jack’ and will be speaking on a panel at 10.45 at the Keeping Books ALIVE Conference.
Presented by the Australian Children’s Literary Board.

Yianni Johns is the ABC Radio Central Coast, Arts presenter, an artist and a fellow Australia Day Ambassador which we both LOVE!
We had fun this afternoon in the fishbowl in Erina – the glass window is exposed to shoppers and passer-bys – so everyone sees you. Scott Levi is a great interviewer and has a great banter with Yianni.
Chatted about MonkeyBaa Theatre’s ‘I AM JACK’ at the Seymour and invited everyone across Australia to support the charity performance of ‘I Am Jack’ for The Alannah & Madeline Foundation, keeping children safe from violence – 7 p.m. 4th November at Seymour [email protected].
As Breast Cancer Month comes to a close, it was fitting to talk about ‘Always Jack’ which is endorsed by the Cancer Council – making it safe for kids, parents and community to talk about cancer and celebrate life.

The sun was shining, Government House was a gracious reminder of the past, the gardens flowering for the investiture of Australians for their contributions to Australia.
We sat in the sumptuous sitting room, as guests gathered for the ceremony. It was inspiring to hear the contribution of so many awarded decorations for courage, extraordinary services in fields as varied as medical, business, government, social justice …. and of course my very special Order of Australia (OAM) for children’s literature and professional organisations.
My wonderful children were there which made it doubly special.
Thankyou to my friends who sent me letters, emails, gifts.
Thankyou to the organisations who are part of my life that supported this award – Room to Read, The NSW Writers Centre, SCBWI, CBCA, MonkeyBaa Theatre and many others.
It was a time where I reflected on my parents’ journey as refugees to Australia. I know they were there with me. We had lunch at 21 Double Bay where my father took me as a girl to share Hungarian dishes, laugh and share stories.
I carried a private momento of my parents with me today.
Daffodils, daffodils, daffodils, teachers and kids dressed in yellow and the enthusiastic school librarian Barbara Kirzmann welcomed me to Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day at Fairfield Public School.
It’s a special day of celebration of family, friends and life of those touched by cancer.

My hectic writing tour for August Book Week/Month has taken me across Sydney from Bankstown to Camden to Wahroonga to Rose Bay to Punchbowl to … everywhere.
I have spoken to 1000′s of young people and teachers. Their responses to my visits and talks leave me emotional and deeply touched.
Here are some of the words and thoughts of the kids:-
When Maisam asked you if you believed in ghosts, your response was just what he needed to hear. The cemetery scene really resonated with him as both his parents died in Afghanistan. I think he is comforted by the thought that they are watching over him and that he can talk to them at anytime, just like you do with your dad.
Once again, I thank you and 5th class thanks you too.
Mohammad told me he was a Muslim. He asked me -’What is your religion?’ I believe in God. ‘Do you believe Mohammad was a prophet? Yes, I believe he is. ‘Do you believe Jesus is a prophet?’ Yes, I believe he is. ‘Do you believe Moses is a prophet? Yes, I believe he is. All religions show us the pathway to good. We are all the same and seek to do good.
“Susanne Gervay, you are hilarious and you taught me an important lesson. Hand on my heart, I promise I will never bully anyone, anywhere. I mean that, so thank you. Say hello to Jack for me. I hope Nanna can visit us too now.”
Thankyou for the gift of your congratulations from the writing community and friends all over the world and those who love JACK.

As an Author Role Model I have the joy of supporting the Books In Homes Programme. I’ll be giving out books at La Perouse Public School in Sydney, at the Book Giving Assembly next week. South Sydney Junior Rugby League Club is a sponsor of the Books in Home programme at La Perouse Public School. I LOVE that. “The Books in Homes Programme has given our children the choice and ownership of books to read and enjoy at home.” Empowering Kids, Literally. Books in Homes provides good new books to children and families living in disadvantaged circumstances in Australia, promoting reading and literacy. Since 2001, Books in Homes has distributed in excess of 1,000,000 new books to more than 110,000 needy children from 290 schools and communities around Australia. Who’s at the ABC Studios in Harris Street Sydney? Yes, it’s a PLAY SCHOOL bonanza with Little Ted, Jemima, Big Ted and the famous Humpty Dumpty reading ‘Always Jack’. Come on into the ABC studios in Harris St Sydney and say hello to them. I was visiting the ABC National Radio Studios for an interview for Life Matters with Richard Aedy and ‘Always Jack’. Listen out for the interview in early December. The Cancer Council’s yellow daffodil is special on the back cover of ‘Always Jack’. Sharing ‘Always Jack’ is about being a family. So when there’s a challenge like a Mum getting sick, it’s OK to talk, support each other, laugh & make Christmas a celebration. Add a Comment
