1. MillerWords

You may have noticed some subtle changes to my social media and official site recently.

Here is the good news: MillerWords, LLC is now accepting submissions for publication.

The plan is simple - a streamlined publishing experience which gives more control to the author.

MillerWords will format and produce both paperback and eBooks, then partner with the author to promote the stories in the most creative ways possible.

The question is simple - What can I do for you?

With over 20 years of customer service and retail experience, my goal is to help in any way that I can.  I have been a traditionally published author since 2008 and I want to produce professional, attractive books that will look great on any shelf. Through Authors in the Park, I will offer the added benefit of promoting local authors and selling anything in the MillerWords library.

If you have been trying to decide whether to self-publish, send me an email. If you are tired of rejection letters, send me an email. If you have any questions, send me an email.

MillerWords pricing and contracts are very competitive and fully negotiable. Whether it is one book for a family reunion or the launch of your best-seller career, I want to help you make that dream a reality.

MillerWords is not a vanity press or self-publishing. Your book will be registered with the Library of Congress, have an ISBN, and the MillerWords imprint.

So, what can I do for you?

3. Self-Published Author Offers Marketing Advice on Reddit

redditDylan Jones self-published his thriller novel Black Book back in December 2013.

Since its release, over 30,000 readers have downloaded this title. The book has earned more than 100 four-star reviews on Amazon.com. During a Reddit AMA session, one user inquired about Jones’ efforts in marketing and book promotion.

Jones offered several pieces of advice: “Sure, I made a list of all indie book bloggers and reviewers amd emailed each and every one that I could find. I searched Amazon’s most prolific product reviewers and emailed some of those asking if they would consider reading my book.(This got the least favourable results with people being genuinely angry at even being contacted). I entered competitions for book cover design and even won a “gold star” at bookcoverdesign.com or similar (I forget which without going through my emails to check).”

4. the clay pot against the iron pot

A little while back I was asked why my book was more expensive in my shop as opposed to on Amazon. It is a good question. It is a fair question. I tried to answer it in an illustration. How else?
It is an issue that faces all of us that run a small business. There's no way of competing with the big guys, no way at all, there is no point in trying. But we do have an advantage over them and that is the service we give.
I am not making big bucks off my book, hell, I forgot to even mention, in this illustration, that I have to buy my book off my publisher in the first place - as well as the currency conversion and bank charges that that entails too. That's before the, above, process even begins. No, I'm just scraping by. Always just scraping by.
But when you do buy from a small business or independent seller/artist you are also supporting them in creating their work. Thank you for that. I really don't mind where people buy my book from. It is an honour that they do buy it at all.
I'm glad I was asked this question. It's an important one and it gave me the chance to try and answer it. Quite coincidentally, I was chatting with my publisher, whilst I was in the middle of this drawing, about the price issue when he said "in French we say 'le pot de terre contre le pot de fer'. It's a kind of  David and Goliath" and that's how this drawing got the title.

6. ‘DoubleDickDude’ Self-Publishes a Memoir

diphallicA man who calls himself the “DoubleDickDude” has written a memoir. He became famous on the internet after participating in a Reddit Ask-Me-Anything session one year ago.

The author self-published the book, entitled Double Header: My Life With Two Penises, through Amazon. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he revealed that he was inspired to work on this project for two reasons: (1) he wanted to answer any lingering questions about his unique condition and (2) he wanted to share his story as a member of the LGBT community. He explained:

“From girls who want to know how to handle their boyfriend being uncircumcised to guys wanting to know if they’re gay or bisexual because my equipment turned them on. Really, it just stuns me almost a year later that people are still reaching out to me. So I thought I should put a book together and use that to answer questions; but also give voice to people who might feel lost in the cracks. Even today bisexual people like myself are given more grief than you’d realize. We’re still ‘confused’ or ‘cowards,’ ‘too afraid to admit we’re gay.’ Which is a load of crap.”

7. Smashwords’ Mark Coker Shares 2015 Publishing Predictions

Mark-Coker-HeadshotMarc Coker, CEO of self-publishing site Smashwords, has outlined his predictions for publishing this year.

He expects the self-publishing stigma to continue to go away; indie authors to face more competition from traditional publishers in 2015; and free eBooks to lose their cache. Here is an excerpt from his blog:

Many indies will quit in 2015 – Authorship is tough work.  Discouraged by weak or slumping sales, many indie authors in 2015 will either give up on publishing or will decrease their production rates.  With the rapid rise of anything – whether we’re talking tulips, dot com stocks or real estate – bubbles form when the market becomes too frothy, too optimistic, too euphoric, and too crowded.  All markets are cyclical, so this boom-to-bust pattern, while painful for many, is healthy for the long term, especially for authors who stick it out.

Muscular bodySelf-published author H.M. Ward is a regular on our self-published bestsellers list. GalleyCat caught up with the bestselling romance author of  to discuss her predictions for 2015.

“Savvy authors who built their brands for the past few years will begin to utilize their brand in ways traditional publishers failed to do,” said Ward. “They savvy indie will utilize their brand loyalty to build up more indies, connect with new readers and offer opportunities to readers that have been absent until now. Examples include everything from apps to text messages.”

Ward has experimented with interactive ways to communicate with her readers. For instance, readers can now flirt with her popular character Sean Ferro via text message. Besides offering a fun way to interact with a book in the real world, the function allows her to build a list to promote her text-o-gram feature which alerts readers when a new book hits shelves. 17. Seven Year-Old Aims to Publish Anti-Gun Book

Indiana seven-year-old Terry Miles is writing a book about gun violence and with help from his teacher Ball State University student Brittany Cain. The work will be self-published published as an eBook.

The Shot Heard Around the Town: A Story About How One Boy Can Change the World stems from a letter that Miles wrote to the mayor of Muncie telling about gun violence in his neighborhood. He wrote: “Dear Mayor, I have a problem. I have been hearing gunshots in my neighborhood. Can you make them stop?” which ran in The Star Press. You can watch a news report about Miles here.

As part of a class project, Cain wants to help Miles publish the eBook through Kids at Heart Publishing company, a self-publishing services company that helps self-published authors publish and promote their books for a fee. Miles is currently seeking donations to help fund the project. Huffer Memorial Children’s Center is accepting donations on his behalf. (Via The Star Press).

21. Simon & Schuster Acquires Self-Published YA Novel

Aladdin Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, has acquired the book rights to Strays a self-published YA novel about two orphans by Virginia Castleman.

Castleman self-published the book through Archway Publishing, a self-publishing service operated for Simon & Schuster by Author Solutions, back in February where it gained momentum and attention. This is the first time that a Simon & Schuster imprint has acquired a title from Archway.

“Virginia Castleman is a strong writer with a fascinating and emotionally wrenching story to tell,” explained Mara Anastas, Vice President and Publisher of Aladdin Books and Simon Pulse, in a statement. “I was immediately struck by her unique voice and storytelling ability, and we look forward to working with her to bring Strays to an even wider audience.”

The book is slated for a spring 2016 release.
