1. Book Giveaway

Book Giveaway

A sweet mid century vintage children's book today, Knowing and Naming. If you are old enough to remember, Shari Lewis was a ventriloquist who had a children's program on TV with her puppets, the most famous being Lamb Chop.

I am offering this book today as a giveaway. Leave a comment to be entered, the winner will be chosen at random and announced on Wednesday. This book has nice mid century illustrations and would also be a good book to read to your preschooler.

2. Seven or So, Book Two in Health and Safety by W.W. Bauer, M.D.; Designed by John Horton, Illustrated by Michael Mitchell, Scott Foresman and Company, 1957

My apologies for the lapse in posting. I have been working on a business card for a friend. Hope to make up for it with this feature of a super nice textbook.

It's time for a little mid century book love. This book has what it takes and it's a textbook. I am showing more pics than usual - it's just that good. Seven or So is book two in The Basic Health and Safety Program.  Designer John Horton and illustrator Michael Mitchell made a great team - love the illustrations, layout and design in this book! So much so that I have ordered the other two books in the series.

I haven't been able to find any information on John Horton or Michael Mitchell yet, but I will continue looking. If anyone knows about this team, please leave a comment, I would like to know what else these guys did.

3. 53 Years of Latvian magazine - Jauna Gaita

53 years of Jauna gaita magazine cover design

After the second World War many Latvian writers were relocated to different areas of the world. Many ended up in Great Britain, Canada and the USA. Living in these new lands they began their own periodicals and publication houses. A new generation of writers emerged. “Living in foreign lands and surrounded by other cultures, these writers strove to capture the influences of modernism.” * One of the magazines that surfaced during this time period was Jauna Gaita (the new course). Ilmārs Rumpēters who designed many of the covers of Jauna Gaita during the 1950s-1970s, wonderfully captured the spirit of this era.

Running with a Japanese theme today. Can’t stop thinking about those flicks I caught this past weekend. Great cover for a Japanese graphic design magazine from the sixties.

Also worth checking out, is this Japanese poster we posted.

1960s Japanese book cover designs

I don’t know much about the company that published the book on the right, but the book on the left was published by Kappa in 1963. Keep your eyes out for Kappa, they have other cool covers.
