Way back in 2011 I reviewed Swindle by Gordon Korman. As a bookseller and now a librarian, it is the perfect go-to book for boys who don't like to read. My quick pitch for Swindle, which is now a seven book series, is to tell kids and parents that it's basically a heist story, like the movie Ocean's Eleven but with kids. Korman is a skilled writer who can tell a fast-paced story with

Fever Crumb was one of the seven books shortlisted for the Cybil's finalists in the Fanstasy & Science Fiction (Middle Grade) category. While I didn't give it the critical treatment here that I did for the other books that were nominated, I will tell you that it was the top contender for the award, along with Jacqueline West's The Shadows. All the judges loved it but, ultimately, we felt that

The Roar by British author Emma Clayton is so many amazing things at once and has stirred up such visceral feelings in me that I hope I can do it justice here. For a very concise review by that hits all the right spots, check out Pink Me, which is a book review site written by a children's librarian with great taste and insight when it comes to YA books. For my longer, slightly more rambling

Thanks for the kind words! I know exactly how you feel about returning to the His Dark Materials trilogy... If you get the chance, listen to the audio. It is a production with a full cast of voice actors and Philip Pullman as narrator!
Sounds like a really good read! Hope the library gets it for me soon. I've also requested Going Bovine after seeing it in your awards summary sheerly based on the title and cover. Have you read it yet?
I haven't read "Going Bovine," but I have read 2/3 of Libba Bray's trilogy set in Victorian England. "Bovine" sounds good, but two people (one of whom is a coworker who is also a middle school librarian, another who is an aspiring writer of teen books) both told me they quit it by the middle of the book. If it was a book I might review I would give it a try
