May B. doesn't come out until January 10, but that doesn't mean you can't include it on your holiday gift list! Here are a few creative ways you can help a young reader anticipate a gift that will arrive a few weeks into the new year:
Give Book Pairs
There are all kinds of books that are great companion novels for May B. Consider giving one of these titles along with a note explaining its "partner" will arrive soon.
For another frontier story with plenty of snow:
The Long Winter -- Laura Ingalls Wilder
For fans of survival stories:
Hatchet -- Gary Paulsen
Island of the Blue Dolphins -- Scott O'Dell
For another historical verse novel:
Out of the Dust -- Karen Hesse

I love bookplates. Here are three free bookplates that I created for you to print out and use. You may want to print them onto sticker paper and them cut them to size, or you can simply print them on paper and glue or tape them into your book. I hope you enjoy them.

Every year on or around March 2nd, thousands of Pi Beta Phi members take time to advance literacy in their communities through the annual Fraternity Day of Service. And this year is no exception! This week, Pi Beta Phi chapters and clubs across North America use their creativity and passion for literacy to raise funds and organize service projects to provide new books to children in need in their communities.
Working together with First Book, Pi Beta Phi has embarked on their third annual “Make Your Mark for Literacy” Fraternity Day of Service campaign. Pi Phi members have been hard at work decorating individual bookplates that will be placed in thousands of new books. For every bookplate decorated, one child will receive a brand-new book from First Book, toward the goal of donating 50,000 books.
Click on the bookplate image to view a slideshow of the unique bookplates Pi Phi members have created.
Want to pitch in and help celebrate this day of service? Visit The Literacy Site and participate in the “Make Your Mark for Literacy” Click Challenge. Thanks to Pi Beta Phi, the value of your click is doubled through March 15, bringing even more books to kids in need!

If you're looking for a Christmas, Hanukkah, or any other kind of gift for a kid who's in kindergarten through third grade, I hope you'll consider an autographed book. One of my favorite blogs, Shrinking Violet Promotions, is starting a list of authors who will send a signed bookplate if you contact them and tell them you've bought their book as a gift for someone. I was a kid who loved to read but never realized real people wrote books. How cool it would have been to have received a book signed TO ME from the person who actually wrote it! I give autographed books (not mine--other people's books that I love) often for Christmas and birthday gifts. It's a great way to support art, reading, and fun. |
Here are the two bookplates I have available. If you buy Stampede (at your local independent bookstore, or order through Amazon or bn.com), just shoot me an email by going to my website and clicking on Contact. Let me know where you bought the book, who you want it signed to, and where to send the bookplate label. Happy shopping, no matter which books you buy! |
ooh, I loved all these books as a kid. Especially IotBD. I must have read every Scott O'Dell book out there. They were some of the first YA with female heroines I remember adoring.
Tere, in seventh-grade New Mexico history, we read Scott O'Dell's THE KING'S FIFTH about Coronado's search for the Seven Cities of Gold. Loved it!
Great recommendations! I shared on Facebook. :)
Amy, thank you!
I love these old fashioned classics. My kids don't appreciate them (yet). Here's hoping in the new year!
I am excited to read your new book. I just emailed your publisher to ask for a review copy. I hope I can get one!

Mia, thank you! And thanks again for the great verse novel suggestions. I've got a lot more reading to do in this wonderful genre.
I just read your Kirkus review! Congratulations, especially on the JLG selection. That is wonderful news!
I e-mailed :)
And shared on twitter of course
