Lauren Oliver has signed a deal with HarperCollins Children’s Books. She plans to write a new young adult duology; the first book will be called Replica.
According to EpicReads.com, this science-fiction story follows “a girl named Lyra, known by the number 24, a replica—human model–who was born, raised, and observed in a clandestine research facility called the Haven Institute. When Lyra escapes from Haven and meets Gemma, a stranger on a perilous quest of her own, earth-shattering secrets are revealed.”
Rosemary Brosnan, an editorial director, negotiated the deal with Stephen Barbara, a literary agent at InkWell Management. The publication date has been scheduled for Sept. 2016.
Lauren Oliver announced that The Book of Shhh will be released in May 2016.
This fictional book appears in the Delirium trilogy. Oliver’s young adult series features a dystopian story where love is regarded as a disease.
According to Oliver’s blog post, The Book of Shhh will contain “previously unreleased passages from the prominent religious, social, and scientific compendium of the Delirium world.” HarperTeen will publish it as an eBook and make it available free of charge.

The free digital Publishers Lunch Buzz Books have proven themselves accurate predictors of bestseller and best-of-the-year titles, before they are published. This season Publishers Lunch has gathered substantial excerpts from 54 of the most buzzed-about books scheduled for publication this fall and winter in two exclusive, free new ebooks, BUZZ BOOKS 2015: Fall/Winter and BUZZ BOOKS 2015: Young Adult Fall/Winter, offered in consumer and trade editions.
Book lovers get an early first look at new books from New York Times bestselling authors Mitch Albom, Geraldine Brooks, Alice Hoffman, and Adriana Trigiani, and popular and critically acclaimed writers Lauren Groff, Janice Y.K. Lee, Elizabeth McKenzie, and Belinda McKeon; columnist and television host Jason Gay’s first book, the \"whip-smart\" fiction debut of Academy Award-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg; an unprecedented look at feminist and legal pioneer Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg in Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik’s Notorious RBG; Dick Van Dyke’s memoir Keep Moving; Jesse Itzler on living with a Navy SEAL; and the first novels from essayist Sloane Crosley and award-winning short story writer Claire Vaye Watkins.
Following its highly successful introduction last year, Publishers Lunch again is presenting a stand-alone volume previewing exciting and outstanding material from publishing’s powerhouse sector, young adult and middle-grade novels, in BUZZ BOOKS 2015: Young Adult Fall/Winter. This edition holds a taste of eagerly awaited books like new work from bestselling and award-winning leaders in the field including James Dashner (The Maze Runner series), Jennifer Donnelly (A Northern Light and Revolution), Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls and the Chaos Walking trilogy), and Lauren Oliver (Before I Fall, Panic); authors best-known for their adult books (Eleanor Herman and Cammie McGovern); and a good number of exciting debuts (Tessa Elwood’s Inherit the Stars, Moïra Fowley-Doyle’s The Accident Season, and Estelle Laure’s This Raging Light, among others). Aaron Hartzler, author of the critically acclaimed YA memoir Rapture Practice, makes his fiction debut with What We Saw. In what appears to becoming a YA trend, four Buzz Books entries are highly graphic or archival-looking in form via vignettes, diary entries, texts, charts, lists, illustrations and more. These include Hannah Moskowitz’s History of Glitter and Blood, a lyrical fantasy with an unusual graphic format.
Of the 24 adult books previewed and published to date in the 2015 Spring/Summer edition, 19 have made \"best of the month/year\" lists and five are New York Times bestsellers.
BUZZ BOOKS 2015: Fall/Winter and BUZZ BOOKS 2015: Young Adult Fall/Winter are available for free download now on Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Apple’s iBookstore, the Google Play Books store, and Kobo.

Author Lauren Oliver has written a short story set in the universe of her forthcoming young adult novel, Vanishing Girls.
EpicReads.com has posted part one of the piece which is called “The Search.” Part two will be unveiled on February 9th.
The release date for Oliver’s book has been scheduled for March 10th. Follow this link to reach an excerpt.
Oyster has established a new agreement with Pottermore.
Subscribers now have access to all seven installments from the Harry Potter series and the three titles from the “Hogwarts Library”. In honor of this occasion, young adult author Lauren Oliver has penned an essay for The Oyster Review on the influence J.K. Rowling has had on her.
Here’s more from the Oyster blog: “Make sure your Oyster app is updated to version 1.9 and ¾ (you can get it on the App Store and Google Play), and then open a Harry Potter title to get the full effect. Once inside, rather than one of Oyster’s reader themes, choose one of the new ‘House Themes’—with designs inspired by Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff—or tap the Sorting Hat icon to have one selected at random. Then dive into a custom reading experience inspired by your favorite Hogwarts House.”

Last week, Lauren Oliver appeared at the “Epic Reads” panel hosted by Books of Wonder.
During the event, Oliver shared the three traits she feels that fiction writers must possess: (1) great self-awareness (2) radical empathy and (3) a deep interest in human beings. Do you agree with her?
Oliver also divulged that her book Panic was inspired by a Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale called “The Boy Who Left Home to Find Out About the Shivers.” Towards the end of the night, she revealed that she has a number of projects in-the-works: a young adult novel entitled Vanishing Girls, a middle grade series called The Curiosity House, and another young adult story featuring clones.

I was sold on this book by two things: the words “Lauren Oliver” and the idea of ghost POVs. Rooms by Lauren Oliver is a slow, secretive book that intertwines the lives of the dead and the living, and yet its tone is, in turns, contemplative, chilling, and in the end, nearly unbearably sad. If you’ve read the author’s previous young adult or middle grade novels, you probably know that a supernatural book by this author is not going to be your typical ghost story, and it’s a pleasure to find that the author’s first adult novel is sure-footed and clear-eyed. Not all transitions from YA to adult (and vice versa) feel as natural as this, but the author handles adult themes and language and structure with ease. It also has surprising moments of lightness and humor–although Rooms is certainly about death and its aftermath, it is also about life... Read more »

Panic by Lauren Oliver is a YA contemporary about a group of teens in a high-stakes game of dares. They live in a crappy town and the money that seniors are forced to pony up throughout the school year goes to the winner of Panic. Because,
If ghosts are real, they are probably like these: cantankerous, prone to snits, and deeply curious about the warm bodies living in "their" rooms. Oliver's dysfunctional family reunites in a lost-and-found whirlwind of mystery and secrets, with the housebound spirits as unexpected guests. Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a poor town of twelve thousand people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.
We’ve collected the books debuting on Indiebound’s Indie Bestseller List for the week ending March 09, 2014–a sneak peek at the books everybody will be talking about next month.
(Debuted at #3 in Hardcover Fiction) Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson: “Six years ago, the Assassin in White, a hireling of the inscrutable Parshendi, assassinated the Alethi king on the very night a treaty between men and Parshendi was being celebrated. So began the Vengeance Pact among the highprinces of Alethkar and the War of Reckoning against the Parshendi. ” (March 2014)

PANIC is finally here! Hooray! I've been waiting for a new Oliver book for months. Torturous months. But the wait is over at last and I have a new book to add to my pile.
If there's one author who is a constant source of inspiration to me, that's Lauren. I just adore her beautiful prose, her way with words. Every time I finish her books, I want more, and it's like a friend has abandoned me. So you can imagine how happy I am about PANIC.
Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he’s sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.
As always, I'll be buying the Kindle edition, 'cause I don't want to wait three months to get the book shipped to me in Argentina. I need to read this nau.
Run along, Little Olives, and strip the shelves clean of this awesome book!
Panic, though rife with classic dystopian plot points, isn't just another thrilling young adult romance novel. It's beautifully written, with superbly drawn characters, and a thoughtful look at love, loss, and a rite of passage in a heartbroken little town. Soon it will be time to buy a new calendar for 2014. Earlier in the year, photographer Lauren Zurchin ran a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a fantasy author-themed calendar project called “Beyond Words: A Year of Daydreams.”
The calendar is now complete and features photos of fourteen authors dressed up as fantasy characters. Each calendar costs $20; the proceeds generated from the sale of these calendars will be donated to First Book and Worldbuilders.
The participating authors include Lauren Oliver as a trapped spirit, Gregory Maguire as a steampunk automaton, Cassandra Clare as Autumn, and Christopher Paolini as Death. Here’s more about Paolini’s photo shoot:

I am posting this because I think all of us should be thinking past having a website, blog, and a facebook page and start thinking about selling our books. This is an excellent discussion guide for Lauren Oliver’s fabulous book, PANDEMONIUM. With this one piece she is showing that she is a true professional, generating interest in reading her book, and providing content for teachers to encourage them to invite her in to their school. Are you putting out something this high end? Next week I will share an excellent middle grade discussion guide and a picture book discussion guide. I hope these will get you thinking about doing more than just putting up a website and hoping someone calls.
Talk tomorrow,
Kathy

The exciting news this week was that I got to host a couple panels regarding Banned Books (it being the week of ‘em and all). The first was at the Brooklyn Book Festival with David Levithan, Francesca Lia Block, and Lauren Myracle. I then cannibalized my own questions and used them in this, a Google+ Hangout alongside Lauren Oliver, Lev Grossman, and Lexa Hillyer. My sole objection: You cannot see my awesome shoes.
And yes. The Google offices do have free food, copious couches, and massage rooms hither and thither.
Speaking of the Brooklyn Book Festival, I was pleased as punch to see Catherine Jinks speaking there, live and in person. She mentioned this video which, through utter and total coincidence, I’d seen on my own a couple days before. Alfred. Is. Perfect. Look at his fingernails!
And speaking of awesome book trailers . . .
And yeah. Your book trailer might be awesome. But did yours ever have a snappy theme song? I’m just so pleased that our own Gregory K. (he of Gotta Book and The Happy Accident) is debuting his middle grade this year. Spoiler Alert: It’s good.
And…. okay. So, maybe I’m a pushover. Obviously this isn’t my usual video. But I just sorta liked the feel of this little paper studio and the kiddos who help out. The narrator I can live without (would that Mimi had narrated the whole thing herself) but I like the kids and I like the product. So sue.
And for the off-topic video of the day . . . was there any question what I’d go with? This video works better when you know beforehand that the father is trying to distract his daughter from the “scary” fireworks outside.
I also like the fact that he clearly did her hair that night.

Excellent post, Kathy! Lauren keeps showing, over and over again and in many ways, that she really knows what she’s doing!
REALLY looking forward to the ones for MG and PB
Kathy, Thanks for posting this. I was wondering, do you also have info on promo for the younger market, picture books/early chapter books? Thanks.
Robin,
Yes, I plan to post a middle grade and picture book example. I think it is important to start thinking along these lines.

Thanks Kathy! Really, really appreciate this.
I love, love, love Lauren Oliver. She is so smart. I remember being blow away by her YA. She definitely stands out from the crowd from a craft perspective.
Erin,
I’m with you – I love, love, love Lauren Oliver, too. So glad I found her books.
