Day 1 of 3 for 5 Art Challenge - I've been tagged by Sally Vitsky in this FB Challenge to show 3 images a day for 5 days of my cut paper illos and to nominate another cut paper artist to do the same.
I nominate Judith Moffett. I don't think you are on Facebook Ms. Moffett but you could post here on the Dust blog which will then show up on FB.
I've recently started a FB page for illustration to keep it separate from my jewelry stuff. I'm showing older pieces for the challenge since I frequently show images from my current picture books.
It is https://www.facebook.com/pages/Susan-Swan/570998812972748

It’s hot in Los Angeles. Like, super really really hot. That’s why this book is an especially welcome reprieve. A book with snow in it? Please. A book with cool blues and winter scenes? Yes.
This is Fox’s Garden.
It’s a lovely little book.
A lone fox, stark red against the white forest. A house in the distance, swirling with the colors of home and twilight. Frightened grownups chase him away. A boy cloaked in red, watching and waiting and caring.
This boy loves animals. They are in sketches, framed on his wall. They are in mobiles and stuffed friends, in bookshelves and toy chests.
This fox, followed by her brood, leaves blossoms of kindness right back for the boy. It’s a tale of sharing and growth and unlikely accomplices. No words, all heart.
And the pictures. My French is un peu rusty, but according to Princesse Camcam’s blog, these have got to be cut paper illustrations, lit and photographed. They are intricate and textured, perfect layers for this story of a fox and his friend.
Remember when we talked about complementary colors setting the tone and mood? The rich red of the fox is set apart so dramatically from the snowy scene and the stark greenhouse. It’s a mood, and it’s a strong one. It’s so pretty, too.
Keep an eye on Enchanted Lion, folks. They are in the business of making beautiful books.
Working on a new children's book about a little frog... squeal! Still not sure what I want him to look like. I am using all cardstock black, red, white, green (light and dark) and polka dot green (love).
More to come...

Oh, the Pratt Show . . . it’s hard to believe that it’s been a full year since all the momentous graduation-related events were happening to me! It was great to be on the other side of things last week… browsing new artists, sipping champagne and catching up with old classmates, without the stress of having my own work in the show.
This year’s class certainly didn’t disappoint in talent! I was so proud to see many familiar faces represented at the show, from Sarah Mimo‘s swoonworthy clocks, to new textile prints from Alexa MacFarlane and new comics from our former Putnam intern, Kris Mukai. I’m also jumping for joy to showcase Christee Curran‘s video storyboard project (above). How adorable is that kid at the beach?!
In addition to old friends, there were also a few new faces at the show. Here were my favorite kids’/book related discoveries:
1. Alexandria Marie Compo / I loved her quirky animal characters, and combination of digital and hand-crafted work. In fact, we were all so taken with her 3-D figures that they almost “walked” away with us! Very well suited for the pages of a trade hardcover picture book.
2. Michelle Lynch / Michelle’s range of work is crazy &nd

I have no idea who linked me to this generous lady's blog, but I was the lucky recipient of this wonderful cut-paper bird giveaway! I had totally forgotten I had entered. I just love it and will frame it for the guest bedroom. Thank you Norma!
Many of you know I had the pleasure of stopping by Mim's house last Sunday.
The meeting was short but sweet, each of us having to dash off in different directions.
It was so wonderful to see her beautiful home and the wonderful spaces and places she has to create her amazing art. And I saw original Miss Ems!! It really is something being in another artists space, especially if it's one you adore ;)♥
On my way out she handed me a gift wrapped in the most luscious, colorful textured paper. She said it was for my birthday "whenever it is!" Too funny.
I handed her lilies from my yard which looked pretty sad by the time I got there :P
Anyway...This is what I saw in the box! A handmade paper bowl

Good things Lolo!!! I *stay* blonde.....it is a helpful item especially when having to deal with men or police. HAte to admit that....I just give them the blank look and smile. :D Well, sometimes it doesn't work! Love that bowl with the nest!
How I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mim's gifts to you.....they perfectly reflect YOU! That bowl - with the colours (yes, I see them) and the STAR*S.... look like they were meant to live at "Chateau Lolo". And, you know me well enough now to see how I adore the bird's nest and egg...
Your bird-prize winner is such a happy sight! (And I ♥ the musical score background!)
Anyway, even if you aren't adept with GPS...(and you are talking to a "Blondie" who has not driven a car in two years)....you are one awesome redhead - who has a lot to be thankful for!
Oh lucky for winning the bird, I love the songbird effect. And luck(ier) you to meet up with Mim.I adore the page she did for my Girlfriend's Traveling sketchbook. Very talented. (I'm having bowl envy) I named our GPS thang CarLOTTA,,but I'll swear this eternal strawberry blonde does best with Mapquest. Happy, happy, unbirthday!
I love that bowl too and that nest! And the cards are beautiful. I am going to have to start stalking Mim, I can tell, the only reason I haven't already is lack of more time! By the way my blog misses you :-). xoxo P.S. And that bird up top is pretty wonderful too.
sounds like a great visit. wonderful bowl and nest gifts. I used to make a lot of similar bowls. I wonder where they all are now? I think I need to get this GPS to help me out myself.
the Sisterhood is allowing blonde jokes this one time. otherwise the fines will include penalties not yet determined.
hahaha! i'm acting like i'm the boss of your blog!
i want to be more blond. every hair dresser i go to, i say 'i want light hair. i don't want dark brown hair.' and i always get dark brown. i don't know why... :)
you get more gifts than anyone else i know and with good reason :)
How wonderful, Laurel, that the bowl found its way into your hands. And the bird on the music had me sighing with pleasure.
As I sit here on the first evening of my retirement, I realize I must start writing a list of things to make a part of my life again. Papermaking is one of them.
Such a tenderly sweet post. I'm delighted to know bloggers actually take time to meet. I will try that some time. The bowl is lovely - I'm smitten by it :]
Oh my what exquisite gorgeous things you got there! So nice it must have been to see Mim! And yes those bowls!!!!! Indeed lovely. Lucky you! I am packed to go again , just a little nap before I go as I have a long day and night ahead of me..... We keep in touch in BKK. Hope you are having a nice time with Stella!
It is a beautiful bowl and wonderful gift. I'm so jealous that some of my blogger friends actually get to see each other in person! The bird on music paper is unique also. I really like that!
Quite inspiring, isn't it? I love the way that others are taking different approaches to traditional animation. Simple camera tricks (and timing) can go a long way with a great idea.
Alec Jones pumps out some fun, cartoony work. I like the bold outlines and rounded, geometric shapes. His style seems perfectly suited for translating into paper cut-outs, and that’s just what he’s been doing:
While Christian Robinson seems to be comfortable in a lot of different mediums, I think his collage work is what charms me the most and what he seems to have the most fun making. It’s hard to pick my favorites, but his character design is quite fun throughout. He worked as a Pixar intern and worked on a picture book for UP called Beware of Dug — that’s enough to be quite amazing! And his animations (particularly Dinosaur Song, posted on his animation blog) really make me happy –I wish that he would get hired to do animations for Sesame Street.
See lots more at his blog, which has lots of process, sketches, and details for your perusal.
Today is one of my bestest (is that a word?) girlfriend's birthday. Have a great day and go get a cupcake from that great little shop in Raleigh (you know the one!!) You just keep getting better every year!

Thank you SO VERY MUCH for the birthday wishes! I love the cupcake and extra sprinkles!!! THE cupcake place in Raleigh is on my radar screen - great memory you have!
Here's a really quick (15 minute) example of a digital "cut paper" illustration. (Click to see a little more detail.) This is so easy to do in Painter. If I spent more time on this I would give some areas a larger drop shadow and scan in some favorite paper textures to use instead of ones in the Painter library.
Each color or texture of paper gets its own layer.
Use your lasso tool as a pen to draw your shape.
Fill in with the bucket tool either a color or pattern.
Add an Effects>Apply Surface Texture
Add an Effects>Objects>Create drop Shadow
You can reorder layers any time you want, move shapes around, recolor paper or add new patterns or textures.
Happy birthday to her! She is going to be a very happy kid. :)
(Thanks for your nice words!)
