1. Senator Al Franken Inks Memoir Deal With Twelve

Senator Al Franken (GalleyCat)Al Franken, the current junior United States senator from Minnesota, has signed a memoir deal with the Hachette Book Group imprint, Twelve. Prior to establishing his political career, he (pictured, via) was well-known as a writer and comedic actor on Saturday Night Live.

According to The Associated Press, the book “will cover his career from Saturday Night Live to his years in Washington…He has joked that the new book would be a ‘psychological thriller’ about his experiences in the Senate.”

The Huffington Post reports that Franken received “at least $1 million” for this book deal. Robert B. Barnett, an attorney at Williams & Connolly LLP, negotiated the agreement on his behalf. The publisher has scheduled the release date for 2017. (via Forward)

3. Paul Ryan Lands Book Deal

pryan1 (1)Representative and former Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan has inked a book deal with Grand Central Publishing’s Twelve imprint.

Williams & Connolly attorney Robert B. Barnett negotiated the deal with editorial director Sean Desmond. Publication is set for August 2014. Ryan has more than 360,000 followers on Twitter. Here’s more about the book:

4. Hillary Rodham Clinton Lands Book Deal for Memoir

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will write a new memoir for Simon & Schuster, a book focused on “key decisions and experiences as Secretary of State.”  Publication is set for 2014.

Williams & Connolly attorney Robert B. Barnett negotiated the deal with publisher Carolyn ReidyJonathan Karp will edit the book for Simon & Schuster’s trade imprint. Here’s more about the book:

5. Charles Krauthammer Lands Book Deal with Crown Forum

Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer inked a book deal with Crown Forum. Things That Matter: Three Decades of Passions, Pastimes, and Politics will come out this fall, including work from the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer’s career.

6. Dick Cheney Lands Book Deal for a Medical Memoir

Scribner will release a medical memoir from former Vice President Dick Cheney next fall, a book written with the politician’s cardiologist, Jonathan Reiner, M.D..

Attorney Robert B. Barnett negotiated the deal with Susan Moldow. Scribner senior editor Shannon Welch will edit. Cheney will donate “a portion of the authors’ net proceeds” to charity. Here’s more about the book, from the release:

7. Astronaut Mark Kelly Lands Picture Book Deal

Astronaut Mark Kelly has inked a deal with with Paula Wiseman Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, for a picture book called Mousetronaut. Publication is set for October 9th.

Artist C. F. Payne will illustrate the book. Publisher Paula Wiseman will edit the book. Executive vice president Jon Anderson negotiated the deal with Williams & Connolly LLP attorney Robert B. Barnett.

Here’s more from the release: “Mousetronaut tells the story of a small mouse that wants nothing more than to travel to outer space. The little mouse works as hard as the bigger mice to show readiness for the mission . . . and is chosen for the flight! While in space, the astronauts are busy with their mission when only the smallest member of the crew can save the day.”

8. Nikki Haley Lands Book Deal

Just days after signing a controversial bill cracking down on illegal immigration, South Carolina governor Nikki Haley has inked a book deal with Penguin Group’s Sentinel imprint.

Entitled Can’t Is Not An Option: My Story, her memoir will be published in January. The book will share “her vision for the country and the Republican Party.” Williams & Connolly attorney Robert B. Barnett negotiated the deal with publisher Adrian Zackheim.

Zackheim had this comment: “Governor Haley has already had a fascinating journey. She’s part of an all-American success story — a hardworking immigrant family that overcame great obstacles and proved that the American dream is still possible for anyone. And she is clearly a rising star in national politics.”

9. Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels Lands Book Deal

Indiana’s Republican governor Mitch Daniels has inked a book deal with Penguin Group’s Sentinel imprint. Publication is set for September, with the tentative title Keeping the Republic: Limited Government, Unlimited Citizens.

In January, a Fox News columnist called Daniels (pictured, via)  “the most promising Republican candidate to run president in 2012.” Sentinel publisher Adrian Zackheim acquired world rights to the book and Robert B. Barnett of Williams & Connolly negotiated the deal.

Daniels had this statement: “I’m offering these thoughts only because I am desperately alarmed about the condition and direction of the American republic. What just recently seemed a highly secure, ever more prosperous, internationally dominant nation is now endangered as never before, save perhaps the days of Soviet nuclear confrontation. But I devoutly believe there is a route to renewal, a way to reconstruct both our economy and an ethic of citizenship that will preserve both prosperity and liberty.”

10. Barack Obama Publishes Picture Book

obamakids.jpgPresident Barack Obama‘s picture book, Of Thee I Sing, arrived in bookstores and eBook format today. Random House has also released a promotional video about the book.

Here’s more about the book, from the release: “Obama’s poignant words and Loren Long’s stunning images together capture the promise of childhood and the personalities and achievements of the following Americans: Georgia O’Keeffe, Albert Einstein, Jackie Robinson, Sitting Bull, Billie Holiday, Helen Keller, Maya Lin, Jane Addams, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Neil Armstrong, Cesar Chavez, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.”

President Obama’s attorney, Robert B. Barnett, handled the negotiations for the manuscript back in 2009. Knopf executive editor Michelle Frey edited the book. Children’s book artist Loren Long provided the illustrations.
