The high is 82 degrees today in New York City, and yet it’s already time to talk holiday books! I’m soaking up this warm weather, because Winter will make its appearance the way it always does: abruptly and with no mercy… but when it does, books that evoke feelings like these–nostalgia, gratitude, love for family and friends, the magic of the holiday season– are what make it all worthwhile.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and you know what that means: time to read some love stories! Below are just a few selections with which you’re sure to fall in love. So snuggle up with your favorite little reader and share a good laugh, a cuddle, and a whole lotta love.
Even though Mr. Prickles may be prickly on the outside, he’s warm and fuzzy on the inside and looking for someone to see past his rough exterior. Thank goodness for Miss Pointypants who knows a thing or two about being judged on her sharp appearance. The deeper message LaReau humorously imparts is how to control one’s anger when ostracized by friends. Little kids who have been banished from the sandbox will love Mr. Prickles. (Ages 2-6. Publisher: Roaring Brook Press)
Ah, young love. This book is absolutely perfect for second and third graders confused by their beloved’s sudden mood swings. When a little bunny falls in love with another funny bunny, what’s a bunny to do? Leave it to a good friend to help him unravel the mysteries and agonies of a first crush. First rule of thumb: you have to speak to the one you love. (Ages 5-8. Publisher: Penguin Group (USA))
This tale about two star-crossed cats is seriously funny. Scotton’s silly illustrations of Splat the Cat reminded me just a bit of Garfield, but his story is pure fun. Splat goes to great lengths to impress his lady love, Kitten, but when Spike intervenes, it seems all is lost. Leave it to Kitten, with her feline prowess, to choose the best suitor to win her affections. (Ages 4-7. Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers)
Two books about pointy critters in one review? Yes, indeed. In this “sharp lesson in love,” Hedgehug discovers love hurts after his many failed attempts to share a hug. In Sutton’s playf
I know, it seems crazy to talk about the holiday season already. But this is also the point where we start putting in book orders for the latest titles and replacing old books as well. So let’s jump in and talk about some of the newest books for the holiday season:
THE HAPPY ELF by Harry Connick Jr., illustrated by Dan Andreasen (On-sale now). Based on the song by Harry Connick Jr., this comes with a CD. You can also watch the video.
A CHRISTMAS GOODNIGHT by Nola Buck, illustrated by Sarah Jane Wright (On-sale now). In its starred review, Publishers Weekly said that this book “serves special status, to be kept off-season with other holiday decorations and then brought out each year at Christmas.”
THE LITTLEST EVERGREEN by Henry Cole (On-sale now). School Library Journal calls this “a fine Christmas choice with an environmental message.”
Kids can read in the traditional way with “page turns” and either they can read to themselves or be read aloud to by a parent or caregiver. There’s also a “read to me” feature with a pre-recorded voice. And now, with the new interactive ability, there’s some animation and activities – while still staying true and respectful to the book’s original art and intent, we think (yes, we were skeptical at first too). But LITTLE WHITE RABBIT is darling when he hops. SPLAT THE CAT hides under his bedsheets, peeking out periodically, making us giggle. FANCY NANCY allows the reader to create and draw and interact. It’s pretty darn cool.
I know there are a lot of dog people out there and, don’t worry, we’ll come back another day and give them some love. For today, though, we’re giving over the blog to the felines.
Need some cat books for preschool storytime? Here are a few suggestions:
Trick-or-treat. Smell my feet. Give me something good to read!
Well, it doesn’t quite rhyme, but I do wish that people gave out kids’ books instead of candy during Halloween.
For those of us that really enjoy Halloween— you know who you are: you’ve had your child’s costume since July, you’re dying for a visit to the pumpkin patch, and you’re dreaming of ways to make Halloween last longer than one fabulous day and night—this is the list you’ve been waiting for. There’s the silly, the spooky, the scary, and everything in between. No tricks here—only treats!
The trees are ablaze in fiery reds. Excited children don colorful costumes. And there’s mystery and fun around every corner!
When Addy, Michael, and Karl finish trick-or-treating, their bags are brimming with treats. But the fun isn’t over yet. Their good friend Stillwater the panda has one more special surprise in store for them. A mysterious visitor is about to tell them a spine-tingling story — one that will fill each and every reader with wonder.
Publisher’s synopsis: It’s Halloween, and Splat is determined to be the scariest cat in the class. Unfortunately he’s just too much of a scaredy-cat. He’s afraid of a little spider, and everyone says his costume looks more silly than scary. And when Mrs. Wimpydimple tells a ghost story in the dark, Splat gets so frightened that he tips over his jack-o’-lantern. But when the lights go back on, the entire class is scared silly by a small, black, furry creature with a big pumpkin head. Whooooo can it be?
Valentine's Day is next Saturday, but I thought it might be more helpful to give you my picture book picks for V-Day this week, just in case you want to look for them this upcoming week. Enjoy!
Lovey and Dovey is written by husband and wife team, Elle van Lieshout and Erik van Os and illustrated by Mies van Hout. And is SO cute. Now some of the more "picky" or "conservative" folks out there may say this story advocates stealing, but really, it's just about loving each other.
Lovey and Dovey are a husband and wife that were placed into a small, bleak dungeon when they were caught stealing a pair of socks. Completely in love with each other, the pair does everything they can to make each other happy, including making their new "home" sweet and cozy. Dovey shimmies between the window bars and paints a beautiful mural of sun and sea, placing it over their window so they have a beautiful view The pair begin to love their dungeon so much, as it's now filled with their love for each other, that when they're released, neither are quite sure what to do. They miss their cozy little cell! Finally they have another brilliant idea...to steal another pair of socks! :)
In my opinion, an adorable read aloud...

Love, Splat is written and illustrated by the amazing Rob Scotton. His first Splat book, Splat the Cat, was a rousing success, combining adorable (and beautiful) illustrations and a cute story about a worrisome cat named Splat. This second book is just as cute and adorable, but this time adds a little bit of luv in the mix!
Now that Splat has gotten to love his new school, it's almost Valentine's Day and he is anxiously waiting for the right moment to tell Kitten, the most popular cat in school, how much he likes her. He spends lots of time making a beautiful valentine for her, but all she seems to want to do is pick on him. When another cat makes a move on Kitten first, Splat is sure he's lost the love of his short life...but sometimes girl cats are sneakier than they seem.
Rob Scotton is incredibly talented when it comes to illustrations and his stories are super cute. This would make a great Valentine's read aloud. You can pair it with a Valentine making craft.

My Penguin Osbert in Love, written by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel and illustrated by H.B. "Buck" Lewis, is another "second" book, as was Splat.
This time around, Joe's penguin Osbert (who is now living in the zoo), shows up on the boy's doorstep looking for help getting to the South Pole. Though Joe has another obligation, he agrees to help out the penguins and finds out that there is something much more beautiful at the South Pole than just the amazing "Southern Lights." Osbert has fallen in love!
A sweet story, if not a bit long. I would recommend this one more for home reading than a read aloud at story time. Also includes recipes for Southern Extravaganza Punch and Black and White Penguin Cookies. Yum!

Splat the Cat, a new picture book, written and illustrated by Russell the Sheep creator Rob Scotton, is absolutely perfect for back to school month. Since first reading it, it has flown to the top of my list to recommend to parents of children heading off to kindergarten or even to another grade this fall. You’ll love it, promise!
On page one we meet Splat, a fuzzy black cat that is about to head to school for the first time. He is terrified of what school will be like and does everything possible to make it possible to just stay home. His mom convinces him to head off to his first day, but Splat knows he will need a friend to help get him through the day, prompting him to place his pet mouse (yes, a mouse) in his lunch box. Splat’s day goes much better than he expects and he begins to actually enjoy school, until his pet mouse decides to peek his head out of the lunch box. Where there are mice and cats together, problems are bound to arise!
The story is cute and the illustrations are AMAZING!! This has been a huge hit with me and I know kids everywhere will get a kick out of Splat’s story, especially if they are new to the school scene. Scotton can do no wrong in my book!

I'm going to open with what was originally my closing paragraph. You can decide whether to read further after that.
Note to Publishers and Art Departments everywhere: you never look like greater fools than when you don't have any faith in your books and feel the need to use cover space for advertising copy. It doesn't matter if it's front or back cover,
