This month’s best selling kids series from The Children’s Book Review’s affiliate store Captain No Beard, by award-winning author Carole P. Roman, is an imaginative picture book series loved by all.

This month's our list of hand-selected series from the nationwide best selling Children's Series list, as noted by The New York Times, features James Dashner's Maze Runner series and Ransom Riggs' Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series.

Ransom Riggs has signed a two-book deal with the Penguin Young Readers imprint, Dutton Children’s Books. He (pictured, via) has become well-known as the author behind the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children trilogy.

For the first book, Riggs intends to write an illustrated collection of fairy tales set in the Peregrine universe entitled Tales of the Peculiar. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Riggs’ second book under the deal will be an all-new YA story not connected to the Peregrine series.”

Julie Strauss-Gabel, vice president and publisher, negotiated the deal with Jodi Reamer, a literary agent at Writers House. Strauss-Gabel will edit Riggs’ manuscripts. Entertainment Weekly reports that the publication date for the fairy tale book has been set for Fall 2016. The Tim Burton-helmed film adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will hit theaters in Dec. 2016. (via Bustle)

What were the most popular books at the Google Play store this year? The data team crunched the numbers and announced that E.L. James claimed the number one spot.

In total, James captured five slots on this year’s list. Some of the other titles on the list include Paper Towns by John Green, Allegiant by Veronica Roth, and The Giver by Lois Lowry.

James, Green, and Roth were all featured on the 2014 list. Below, we’ve collected free samples of all the books from the 2015 top ten for your reading pleasure.

Over the weekend, the organizers behind YALLFEST announced the launch of a new West Coast-based sister event called YALLWEST. The 2015 dates for both festivals were also revealed.

YALLWEST will take place in Santa Monica, CA from April 11th-12th, 2015. YALLFEST will follow later on in the year in Charleston, SC from November 13th-14th, 2015.

Librarian Robert Graves announced on Twitter that he will be working on the programming for YALLWEST. Several writers will also be taking part on the YALLWEST team: Holly Goldberg Sloan, Pseudonymous Bosch, Brendan Reichs, Tahereh Mafi, Margaret Stohl, Marie Lu, Ransom Riggs, Leigh Bardugo, and Melissa de la Cruz.

Hollow City Ransom Riggs

This sequel to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children picks up exactly where the last one left off. Having been a few years between books, it was a little confusing in the beginning as I tried to remember plot details and the world that Riggs has built.

Jacob and his friends are out of the loop, but still in the 1940s, traveling from their island to London, trying to find another ymbryne who can hopefully fix Miss Peregrine. Along the way they discover more about the Peculiar world, finding other loops and allies, all the while fighting hollows and wights. Of course, once they get to London, they still have to find another ymbryne (it’s not like they’re in the phone book) and deal with the dangers that the Blitz creates when you’re no longer in a timeloop. It all concludes in another wrenching ending that will leave us waiting desperately for the next book.

I do still love the interplay of the photos and the text, but I feel like the photos didn’t work quite as well--maybe because Riggs used all his best ones in the first book, of what needed to be illustrated wasn’t as peculiar, or because I was already used to it from the first book. I’m not sure why. I didn’t NOT work, it just wasn’t as awesome as the first book in that regard. It is still really well designed as a book though. I like the brown papers marking new chapters--it really adds to the feel created by the photographs and the story--retro paranormal, as well.

I did like the further exploration of the world, and the problems with their weird place in time--being out of a loop, but not being in the present creates issues. Some of the things I liked about the first one aren’t here there-- there’s not that is he/isn’t he on Jacob’s reliableness as a narrator. There’s not the slow reveal of this other world, or the slowly building tension--this is a lot more fast-moving action-- and I think that’s where the story needed to go, but it didn’t wow me in the same way. That’s not to say I didn’t like it--I liked it a lot, I just wasn’t as absolutely floored by it the same way I was floored by Miss Peregrine. I do look forward to getting back into the this world with the next book--I just hope it doesn’t take two years before it comes out!
