Before committing to producing a whole series, I thought it best to cut some blocks using different materials. I used wood, lino and plywood for these trial prints. Frankly, there's practically no difference in the outcomes, so I'll probably go with lino for low cost and ease of cutting.

I'm continuing my testing of the Ukiyo-e app on iPad as a proofing device prior to cutting actual wood blocks. The image is yet another Tomato Witch for the Almussafes series of Spanish children's dreams as collected by Roger Omar.

Neil Brigham began drawing at a very young age, spurred on by his kindergarten classmates. Some years later, he put aside the finger paint and crayons while he completed a Masters of Art in illustration from Syracuse University. It was there that he really learned to scribble under the guidance of David Passalacqua and Murray Tinkleman. In addition to his illustration projects, Neil spends time making prints as a member of the Zea Mays Printmaking Studio in Florence, Massachusetts. His work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators and Society of Illustrators Los Angeles.

The first print run is limited to 100 boxes, individually signed and numbered. If you want a deck of these cards you better get your skates on... I sold 5 sets today. I've designed a booklet to go in the box, but am still finalising the copy for it.

These lovely twins popped in to the gallery today, out of simple curiosity. They were bubbling over with enthusiasm for art, so I couldn't resist asking them to pose with a couple of my Cards of Wu (now available from me in a boxed set).
They are holding The Chariot and The Cloud Doctor.

They are 21cm x 15cm and currently come in a plain tin box, although the plan is to cut or engrave the lid...suppliers are being sought at the moment. JacketFlap tags: woodcut, erin e. stead, A Sick Day for Amos McGee, illustration, pencil, Add a tag
Now, in my previous post I complained about the weakness of storyline that I found in a lot of children's books that I found on the shelves. But, that doesn't mean every story has to be an intricately developed adventure. There is definitely a place for the thoughtful or simple story. In the case of Amos McGee, the masterful gestures and quiet expression of each character speaks volumes. I think it is the power of the illustrations that can make a book of few words successful. It really got me thinking about the importance of pairing the right writer and illustrator - finding/creating the right illustrations for a particular tale.
Anyway, I had to purchase this one for my own collection - and it will be kept in a safe place until certain toddlers with crayons grow up a little.
