ophelia's nocturne 6x6 mixed media on canvas panel ©the enchanted easel 2016 |
this summer i wanted to try my hand at some small mixed media pieces. i decided to start with a theme of sorts as far as a color palette went....i chose just a few to start with...red, orange, teal and brown. from there two little creatures were born. ophelia here is the first.
mixed media was kind of new for me. i have so many art supplies laying around my home that instead of looking at all of them, well i wanted to try to actually USE them. my paintings/commissions are acrylic on stretched canvas so i never really get to play with my oil pastels or my inks (OMG-can we say "obsessed" now?!) or my tons of scrapbook papers and supplies, etc.
one day i sat down in between commissions and said "what the heck...let's give it a shot!" and so i did...and had a blast doing so. i used everything from paper to water soluble graphite pencils to palette knives to my fingers for this piece. even got some old sheet music from my keyboard ("ophelia" from tori amos to be exact-hence the name of this little owl) and went to town with that. a total blast this was-from start to finish.
PRINTS are available
here and the ORIGINAL painting is also AVAILABLE. contact me
here if interested. hope you love her as much as i do...owls just say "fall" and "halloween" to me. one of my favorite times of the year!

After the second owlet branched from their nesting spot, we lost sight of them for awhile. My campers would stop by the office to ask, “Have you seen them? Are they okay?” To which I had no sure answer.
Until quite by accident, I stumbled across them in the most unlikely place – on a dead tree on the very edge of the lake!
Through tree branches, I watched and took photos.
They watched me, too.
Once, a large raptor flew overhead and I could tell the minute one of the owlets saw it.
I pointed my camera upward just in time to catch a glimpse of an osprey. For the thousandth time, I wondered why on earth these young owlets, who could barely fly, were in such an open, exposed area.
When the danger passed, they went back to taking turns napping again.
The next day, they were gone yet again. Deeper into the forest this time, one of my employees tells me. Thank goodness! I’m not too sure I like the look that osprey was giving them!
So imagine this – it’s a gray, gray Saturday. But I’m lucky enough to be sitting inside a warm, sunshiny colored room, writing away with friends, Cindy and Mona. Around three o’clock, we all sat back and commented on what a great session it was. I personally added about 2300 words to my first draft! I was satisfied. I’d done what I’d come to do, gaining momentum on the first draft of a new story . .. . aaaaand gotten some face-to-face time with two of my favorite writers.
Noticing that I’d brought my camera with the big lens with me (I never go anywhere without it), Cindy asked if I wanted to go find the Snowy Owl.
“Nah,” I replied, looking out the window. “It’s gray. It’s spitting rain. I’m not experienced enough to have had much luck with gray day photography -”
“Let’s go,” Mona said, jumping up. “I love gray day photography!” Her enthusiasm is always so catchy! The next thing I know, we’re all piling in the car and driving to the spot where Cindy and her daughter had spied the beautiful raptor a couple weeks before.
Now, I have a confession to make. Whenever I encounter wildlife, or a beautiful setting unexpectedly, I get teary. The first time I saw triplet eaglets . . . my first loon chick . .. fox kits . . . a gorgeous full moon rising up through a purple sunset sky . . . .
Very geeky of me, I know, but I do.
This time was no exception. As we neared the location, Mona gasped and said, “Look!”
My eyes filled, to see this magnificent creature fluffing up and preening at the top of a light post.
We slowly and quietly got out of the car and the Snowy Owl glanced our way with it’s yellow eyes.
Another photographer came to introduce himself to us and told us how he’d come and found this Snowy Owl perched in the middle of the field. Right before we’d arrived, it had flown toward him to perch on the light post in the middle of the parking lot.
I’d like to think it knew we were coming. Okay, that’s impossible, I know. But the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. We spent close to an hour standing there, ooohing and aaaahing. I snapped photo after photo, hoping I’d be able to capture it’s beauty.
I’m so glad I have friends who are willing to push me to try . . . not letting me listen to my own doubts. This Snowy Owl was a wonder to behold.
And as it turns out, I did get some pretty good photos. Gray day and all.

Nature has a way of being cruel and being kind, here are a few fun facts where you can decide, if it is a trick or treat!
-Bats are the only mammals that can fly
-A flamingo can only eat when its head is upside down.
-If a kangaroo’s tail is lifted off the ground it is unable to hop. They use their tail for balance.
-A baby shark is ready to go fast when it is born, so that the mother shark doesn’t eat it.
-An owl can’t move its eyes, but it can turn its head 270 degrees.
-The cassowary is a beautiful bird and is predominately a vegetarian, but it can tear holes in flesh like Swiss cheese.
-The orca has no natural predator in the sea and they hunt in groups just like wolves do on land.
-Rhinos amble through the African Savanna and thickets of dense plants filled with ticks that attach to the rhinos and make them itch! The tick bird rides along while eating the tasty treat!
-The vampire squid is a creepy ocean creature that squirts glowing goo from its arms.
Find these facts and many more in Arbordale’s For Creative Minds sections! Take a look while you are eating your trick or treat loot!

Great horned owls have been hooting outside my bedroom window this fall. Amy Huntington. http://amysfieldnotes.wordpress.com
So much has happened in the month since I last posted. The campground was super busy with our themed weekends, especially our Halloween ones!
And mid-month, Mystery of the Eagle’s Nest launched! Over 200 people came to the campground, and sat on my front lawn to celebrate with me, my family and Islandport Press. For a special treat, we invited Hope from Wind Over Wings to give a presentation on raptors and ravens.
Teddy – A Northern Saw-whet Owl
The crowd was enchanted with each and bird, and their hearts were touched by their stories and how they came to stay with Wind Over Wings.
Zachariah – Common Raven
Hope and Skywalker have a special bond, it was easy to see. Sky sang to Hope, as Hope told Sky’s story on how he was shot out of the sky. He came close to death, but pulled through, only to find one wing had to be amputated. Can you imagine being an eagle, only to find yourself grounded?
Angry, Sky turned his back on his caregivers. Literally. It was only after much patience, love and special care on the part of Hope and her staff, that Sky turned back to the world.
Hope with Sky – a golden eagle
Now he stars in many presentations each year to educate humans on the life and adventures of being an eagle.
The photo below shows Sky saluting me for my work on Mystery of the Eagle’s Nest. I was very honored.
While my staff helped children make s’mores, and Maxwell Moose wandered around showing everyone who would listen about how he was a character in Mystery of the Eagle’s Nest, I signed books for my readers and campers and friends.
The campground was still in full swing, but I did find time for a few kayaking trips to see the loons
They are preening . . .
and gathering in preparation for their journey to the coast for the winter.
And I even caught the heron, who frequents the marshy area every Fall . . .
School has started as well, and it feels good to be back in the classroom, talking up books, and writing and helping students make the most of each and every day. We are planning an event at the school which will include Hope, and Wind Over Wings.
Going through my photos tonight, I realized I’ve taken many, but posted few. This is mainly due to the time involved in editing them. But now that the campground is slowing down, I can start going through them and will be be able to post summer-time photos well into the winter months!
And you’re going to have to hear all about my research and writing ups and downs, while I tackle book 3: Mystery of the Missing Fox!

I’ve been super excited about trying out inking since I went to Icon a week or so ago, and when I saw that Yuko Shimizu had some videos on skillshare that just came out, I had to watch them. This was the result; it was super fun to work with ink, quick but… MESSY. My hands are covered, hah!
Hi there, remember me? I hope you're having a good summer, mine is off to a flying start.
I'll just pop in here occasionally, but if you want to know about me on a regular basis, I seem to be more of an Instagram person . I don't know why ; less commitment, instant pictures, I kind of like documenting everyday things, processes and experiments. I don't even have a phone, so no pictures from "the field", but stop by and check it out! (follow the link in the sidebar).
As usual, summer is dominated by art camp, so check back for a look at the creative work of little people later this week.
The image below is my submission for the "nautical wall art"assignment this month.
It helped to have a story/poem to connect it too, my ideas were all over the place. I like the topic though, I'll be doing some more drawings in a "nautical vein".
Click
here to see the other submissions in the bootcamp gallery - amazing stuff!

I'm finally back in France after a wonderful two week holiday, and it's taking me ages to get back into the 'routine' and catch up on stuff, and e-courses. I'm working on the text design for next month's newsletter at the moment, but apart from that haven't had the chance to do any new art really, though I'm full of ideas after the trip to Istanbul, that I hope will eventually make it out into the light of day.
Meanwhile however, remember the Cat Blobs that I drew last month? I did get around to creating a pattern out of them, though it still needs a bit of further re-fine-tuning. And I have some doodles that were hidden in the moleskine sketchbook that might not mind being shown off ...
I'd really like to create some patterns from those bees, and I'm not quite sure what I'll do with the Sharing is Caring bear and owl, or the sleepy cats, but as I'm quite fond of them I'm sure they'll get improved on and worked into something in the near future.
Now it's time to start catching up on two weeks worth of my e-course! Wishing you wonderful learning experiences. Cheers.

At the moment I'm busy finishing up a project and taking a
course. Aside from life as usual and a bit of teaching.
I can point you to an amazing
cake recipe though, thanks for being friends!
I'll be back soon.
Right at dusk . . . with a pink sunset fading behind him, the owl swooped into our backyard.
Unlike the other day, when I’d caught a sleepy owl around 3pm, this one was quite active. He almost didn’t look real, as his head swiveled from side to side looking for an early supper.
We watched until we couldn’t see him through the darkness any more.
Oh, how I wished he’d shown up earlier so the pictures were clearer. Still, I was honored by his visit.
Now I can’t stop looking out my back window, hoping for signs of his return.
