1. Kenneth Branagh to Direct and Star in a Remake of ‘Murder On The Orient Express’

Kenneth Branagh (GalleyCat)Kenneth Branagh has signed on to star in a re-make of the Murder On The Orient Express movie. In the past, Branagh (pictured, via) has acted in several book-based projects such as Hamlet, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and My Week with Marilyn.

The Guardian reports that in addition to his acting role, Branagh will also serve as the director and a producer. The story for this film adaptation comes from Agatha Christie’s beloved mystery novel.

Here’s more from Deadline: “Famous for its labyrinthine plot and unconventional solution, the story first published in 1934 sees Christie’s detective Poirot stranded on the famous train during a terrible snowstorm. When a fellow passenger is murdered, Poirot discovers a great number of other passengers could be the culprit.” (via Vanity Fair)

5. Bill Condon to Direct Live-Action ‘Beauty & The Beast’ Film

Disney has hired filmmaker Bill Condon as the director for a Beauty & The Beast live-action film adaptation. Variety reports that screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos has signed on to pen the script. According to Nerdist, the details of the plot have not yet been revealed. Some speculate that the story for Condon's production will be similar to the one featured in Disney's 1991 animated movie. The screenplay for that project is based on Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont's classic French fairy tale. As of late, Disney has been working on a number of live-action fairy tale movies. Maleficent hit the silver screen last week and has received great reviews. Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella has a release date set for March 13, 2015Jon Favreau will helm a live-action/CG hybrid remake of The Jungle Book. 6. Disney Reveals Teaser Trailer For Live-Action ‘Cinderella’ Movie

Disney has unveiled a teaser trailer the live-action Cinderella film adaptation. The story is based on Charles Perrault's beloved fairy tale. A release date has been scheduled for March 13, 2015. Thor director Kenneth Branagh took the helm of this project. The cast includes Les Miserables actress Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother, Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden as Prince Charming, and Downton Abbey actress Lily James in the titular role.

7. Trailer Released for Upcoming Tom Clancy Adaptation

Paramount has released the trailer for the movie, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. The film will hit theaters on December 25, 2013.

The late novelist Tom Clancy created Jack Ryan, and the trailer  was published after he died earlier this week. This hero first appeared in the 1984 novel, The Hunt for Red October; the author followed-up with seven additional installments.

8. Masterpiece Theatre Executive Producer Lands Deal for Memoir

Longtime Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery! producer Rebecca Eaton will publish her memoir with Viking in October. Making Masterpiece: 25 Years Behind the Scenes of Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery! on PBS will be written with Patricia Mulcahy.

Eaton has been an executive producer on Masterpiece since 1985, working on adaptations of many classic novels. Since she joined, the show has earned 44 Emmy Awards, 15 Peabody Awards, four Golden Globes, and two Academy Award nominations. Here’s more about the book from the release:

Eaton interviews actors, writers, directors and producers, and shares personal anecdotes—as well as photos from her own camera—from her decades-spanning career. She reveals what went on behind the scenes during such triumphs as Cranford and the highly rated programs made from Jane Austen’s novels, as well as her aggressive campaign to attract younger viewers via social media and online streaming. Along the way she also shares stories about luminaries such as Alistair Cooke, Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kenneth Branagh, Gillian Anderson, and Daniel Radcliffe, whose first TV role was as the title character in David Copperfield.

9. The Hamlet Video Game That Time Forgot

To play video games or not to play video games? In 1997, EMME Interactive SA released Hamlet: A Murder Mystery video game (box pictured, click to enlarge).

The video game extended the plot of William Shakespeare‘s Hamlet, a tie-in with Kenneth Branagh‘s adaptation of the classic tragedy. Did anybody play this game? We’d love to hear your story.

Here’s an excerpt from MobyGames: “As Young Hamlet, you must avenge the terrible murder of your father and become the new King of Denmark. Use cunning, courage and nerves of steel to survive five levels of gameplay and win the crown in a last and vicious sabre duel in cyber space.
