12. on holding our own tongues, and the movie "Chef"

Maybe I am one of the last people in America to see that delicious movie, "Chef," but maybe that's okay: I saw it when I most needed to. It's a Jon Favreau concoction (he wrote it, directed it, stars in it, produced it). It's Roy Choi influenced, cubano-sandwich powered, infiltrated by actors I love—Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey, Jr., Dustin Hoffman, Bobby Cannavale, John Leguizamo, Oliver Platt, Sofia Vergara. It yields wide patches of time to the fabulous young actor Emjay Anthony. It explores what happens when one's safe world implodes and there is nothing left to lose. You have a job as a chef in a fine restaurant? You have a beautiful girlfriend, an ex-wife who loves you, a little boy who thinks the world of you, security? It all blows up after a bad restaurant critic's review, and you fought back over Twitter? Boom. What are you going to do? Maybe you'll go small. You'll start a food truck.

Affection, humor, tenderness, food you can practically eat off the screen—it is abiding in "Chef." But resiliency is the film's primary theme. Getting back up after someone's been unkind to you, after the unfair thing has happened, after you lose your decorum, your reputation, your holdings in the blink of a Twitter eye. What is the trajectory of second chances? That is what "Chef" is about.

We're out here as writers, and some critics will be unkind. We're out here doing our service jobs, and the person on the other end of the phone has demeaning attitude, that power that comes from being the one in charge, that edge in the curl of their words. We're out here letting the lady at the ATM yell at us because she's having a bad day. We're endlessly holding our own tongues, being the better guy, stepping aside, or stepping up. But, who knows? Someday we may just blow. We may just speak our equalizing minds.

"Chef" is about the guy who blew and the guy who got it back.

It's about hope of another kind. Hope that we can be our best selves again. Hope that the world will make room.

13. Bill Condon to Direct Live-Action ‘Beauty & The Beast’ Film

Disney has hired filmmaker Bill Condon as the director for a Beauty & The Beast live-action film adaptation. Variety reports that screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos has signed on to pen the script. According to Nerdist, the details of the plot have not yet been revealed. Some speculate that the story for Condon's production will be similar to the one featured in Disney's 1991 animated movie. The screenplay for that project is based on Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont's classic French fairy tale. As of late, Disney has been working on a number of live-action fairy tale movies. Maleficent hit the silver screen last week and has received great reviews. Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella has a release date set for March 13, 2015Jon Favreau will helm a live-action/CG hybrid remake of The Jungle Book. What fairy tale would you like to see get the live-action movie treatment?

Disney’s live action/CG hybrid version will be helmed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau. Long Walk to Freedom actor Idris Elba has signed on to lend his voice as the evil tiger, Shere Khan. 16. Cowboys & Aliens: A Respite from Serious Stuff

Newly released Cowboys & Aliens may not be an Oscar contender, but it’s darn good fun and worth the price of a movie ticket … which, in the current movie climate, is saying something. Simple plot line:  “A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way.”

Sounds like the cowboys might get their asses handed to them, you know? But as a friend of mine pointed out, “If James Bond and Indiana Jones can’t save the world, who can?”

I grew up watching Harrison Ford (and not because my friends thought my dad resembled the guy). I watched all the Indiana Jones movies, and embarrassingly, they may be the reason I minored in classical civilizations in college. I was among the many viewers who were thoroughly disturbed by the movie What Lies Beneath, when <spoiler spoiler SPOILER> Harrison Ford turned out to be a bad guy. That said he’s not exactly a good guy in Cowboys & Aliens—at least not at the beginning.

I hate when that happens.

At the beginning, we zoom in on Daniel Craig in the middle of what resembles Sedona, covered in dirt and blood. (The film was actually shot in New Mexico, by the way.) He doesn’t remember who he is, where he came from, or why he’s wearing a wacky metal bracelet. Despite his lack of memory, he sure can kick some cowboy butt, and I’ve been proven wrong: Daniel Craig (most famous as James Bond) should not always wear tuxedos—he should always wear leather chaps and cowboy hats.

From there, the stranger waltzes into town and causes a raucous, until alien spaceships show up and he uses his mysterious bracelet to blow ‘em away. So begins the battle of cowboys versus aliens.

Jon Favreau is the director. He did Iron Man. (Robert Downey Jr. was the original choice for Daniel Craig’s character, in fact.) So expect lots of fast-paced action scenes, explosions, and comic quips amidst the bloodshed—alien and human alike.

Mm. I like chaps.

The aliens themselves are reminiscent of the aliens in … well, Alien. They’re really cool and gross; you’re gonna love them. There are good creep-out moments that had me jumping and enough shallow character development to keep you rooting for the good guys.

Harrison Ford is his charismatic, comic self. The man’s still got it, despite being sixty-nine years old. Daniel Craig is hotter than the desert heat, as is Olivia Wilde, for you Y-chromosomes out there. There are plenty of other interesting cameos. No name stars, but people who’ll make you say, “I know that guy.” And you’ll like him, because there’s plenty to like about this movie.

As I mentioned, it’s not going to win any Oscars (except maybe for special effects), but it’s good, clean, action-
