Yesterday, it was announced that Fox, who holds the film rights for the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, struck an agreement with Marvel in order to pursue their long held goal of putting another X-Men television series back on the screen. The last time this occurred in live action, it gave us such works of […]

This weekend turned out to be a very busy one for comics news. About the one element not being blamed for the Fantastic Four’s meagre $26.2M opening is superhero box office fatigue. The film opened at #2, and was the worst “opening frame” for a superhero film since Green Lantern. And the finger of the blame game is being posted squarely at director Josh Trank, with the Wrap […]

Fantastic Four opens today (technically last night), and the reception that’s greeted the film has been venomous. I didn’t like it either, but I don’t think it’s “9% on Rotten Tomatoes bad”. After seeing the film a week ago, the question that immediately sprung to my mind was: how much of this film represented director Josh […]

In the current mold of superhero film-making, it’s difficult to escape the prevailing wisdom of how studios formulate their respective franchises. There’s the Marvel method, which embraces the colorful comic tones and inherent silliness of the medium, but at its worst can lead to tedium. The efforts of other studios (Fox, WB, Sony) in recent […]

If Fox had a house motto, it would be: “we do not sow. Now let us spit on your Quicksilver, Marvel.”
Bryan Singer loves a few things. Director’s Cuts, long walks on the beach, and movies centered around Time Travel, to name a few. Now we can add crossovers to that list as well. In an interview with Yahoo, Singer confirmed that he’s working with Fox to bring together comics’ first family with comics’ greatest (but maybe not greatest) racial allegory. How will they meet up, you ask?
Singer says:
“It deals with time. That’s all I’m going to say.”
Of course it does.

The buildup to Fox-Marvel’s Fantastic Four has been incredibly quiet compared to the way that the Disney-Marvel typically advertises their superhero beat-em-ups. The film releases on August 7th, and so far we’ve gotten two trailers and now this TV Spot, which demonstrates how far CGI has come since 2005. We still know very little about the plot, although it seems like the film is going to spend a sizable chunk of time building up to the accident that causes Marvel’s first family to gain their powers.
I understand why Fox is choosing to be cautious with this film given how strongly they were lambasted by filmgoers after 2007’s Rise of the Silver Surfer. That said, the understated ad campaign isn’t doing the film any favors as it displays a lack of confidence in the content. From the limited amount of content we’ve seen so far, the film looks fine. It might even have the potential to be great. It’d be nice if Fox’s attitude reflected their faith in that possibility.

‘What’s going on with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four comics’ is the question ringing in the ears of astute comic book fans. Since Marvel owns the films rights to many of their own characters, they continue to publish comics for most of their marquee characters. Unfortunately, Marvel does not own the film rights to the Fantastic Four and X-Men. With the House of Ideas getting ready to prime a massive new Avengers team announced far in advance of the roster taking shape in current continuity, fans are wondering about the current slate of publishing announcements regarding the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters. Nearly a year ago today, Marvel Executive Editor and Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Brevoort chimed in on the with the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises coming to an end with this quote from his Formspring blog:
We are publishing FANTASTIC FOUR. Next month, we will be publishing FANTASTIC FOUR. A year from now, assuming that it’s still selling well, we will be publishing FANTASTIC FOUR. Given enough time, anything can happen—we went a couple of years, for example, without a THOR series, as well as a year and a half with FF, AVENGERS, CAP and IRON MAN not being a part of the Marvel Universe. So anything can happen. But it probably won’t.
Marvel could very well be close to the announcement of a brand new comic published with the Fantastic Four or X-Men, but at the moment, we only know that these two titles are in limbo. Author Brian Michael Bendis is leaving the X-Men titles, which means much of the line will cease publication following the monumental issue #600 (as far as we know.) The Fantastic Four main title has concluded as well, even though key characters (from that slate of properties) are involved in Marvel’s Secret Wars. A fan asked Tom Brevoort about the state of the X-Men currently, this is what he had to say almost a year after the previous statement:
If you had two things, and on one you earned 100% of the revenues from the efforts that you put into making it, and the other you earned a much smaller percentage for the same amount of time and effort, you’d be more likely to concentrate more heavily on the first, wouldn’t you?
As noted by Business Insider, Marvel did kill Wolverine — even if they are still publishing the Old Man Logan title — the main Wolverine character is not alive (for now in 616 continuity.) Amazon also shared a listing from a poster with Marvel characters updated for this calendar year of publishing.
Marvel has also replaced the Secret Wars characters from the following two shirts removing the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters from classic covers. We took this image listing from Amazon, which features the Human Torch notably absent in the red flame streak burning in the background of the cover.
This shirt has Iron Fist and Luke Cage front and center (among others) instead of including the marquee heroes first involved in the event all those years ago. The Secret Wars branding is off of the t-shirt, but the art is repurposed from the original cover.
The Fantastic Four and X-Men are noticeably absent. I would like to rephrase the question asked a year ago involving this piece stating: what would Ben Grimm do?

It’s the start of another week, here are the headlines that are making waves this morning!
– Bryan Singer is keeping the teases rolling for X-Men: Apocalypse, this time around, he shared some concept art for Kodi Smit-McPhee’s younger version of Nightcrawler:
This new Nightcrawler isn’t too terribly far afield from Alan Cumming‘s appearance in X2: X-Men United, which is surely the point. I do wonder though if we’ll get any explicit connection between Kurt and Mystique (and/or Azazel), perhaps that’s a road best not taken.
– Even though we pretty much knew this already, Daniel Brühl recently confirmed in an interview with The Independent that he will indeed by playing Baron Helmut Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, as he responded in the affirmative to a question about his upcoming role:
“I think I can tell you that without being thrown into Marvel prison… For the first few days I’ll walk around like a little boy, just amazed by the megalomania of it. It’s such a huge project. We could do 20 films with the budget.”
So there you have it folks, along with whatever is happening between Iron Man and Captain America, the appearances of Spider-Man and Black Panther, and whatever angle the Winter Soldier story takes, we’re also getting Baron Zemo. This movie is looking more stuffed than Age of Ultron.
– Over the weekend, and somewhat lost in the hoopla over Jared Leto’s Joker, TheWrap reported that Green Lantern and Blade Runner sequel screenwriter Michael Green will be penning the upcoming sequel to James Mangold‘s The Wolverine.
I’m not sure how much blame Green should take for what ended up on screen in Green Lantern, but given his recent high profile gigs (that also includes work on Prometheus 2), we’ll keep our fingers crossed that it was just an aberration on his resume.
Hugh Jackman has stated that this will be his final outing as Logan, so perhaps the time is right to adapt Old Man Logan, especially since it’ll be a while before the Wolverine films and the X-Men films catch up to each other on the timeline, most likely. The new film is scheduled to release on March 3, 2017.
– For those interested, Fox has updated the Fantastic Four movie website to now include bios of the team, with some interesting descriptions of their powers; for example Reed now has abilities that “can warp the space around him, and appear to stretch his body into impossible forms and to incredible lengths.”
Check out further details at the site.

While Jesse Eisenberg‘s shaved head is grabbing most of the attention today, here’s a few other headlines of note in the Entertainment world:
– An intrepid Instagrammer snapped this photo of the international banner for Fantastic Four, giving us our first look at Jamie Bell as The Thing along with the rest of the cast similarly powered up. Here it is via Spencer over at ComingSoon. On the whole, it’s hard not to be an improvement over how Ben Grimm was presented in the last two films, but how it works on screen will tell the tale.
– Bryan Singer has added another mutant to X-Men: Apocalypse, this time breaking with the 80’s set canon and bringing Lana Condor on as Jubilee. He announced the newest X-Men teammate on his Instagram:
– Star Trek 3 is still slowly plugging along and Variety reports that Paramount may have its eyes on fan-casting favorite Idris Elba to play the yet to be revealed villain in the 2016 release. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are co-writing this third entry in the rebooted series for director Justin Lin. Variety also states that The Klingons are rumored to be the main adversary of the film.

Happiest of Fridays everyone! I just got back from a big lobbying trip in D.C. for a cause I’m pretty passionate about, so I’ve been a little off the radar this week. Let’s get back into the swing of things:
– iZombie‘s premiere is next week, and while its delays have left me feeling a little nervous about the potential end product, involving Mike Allred in any capacity is a nice way to salve that wound. He’s been tasked with designing the opening credits, and they’re lovely as anything he touches usually is:
– Latino Review is reporting that former True Blood star and one-time Flash Thompson actor Joe Manganiello is the front-runner to play Deathstroke in David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad. According to their sources, he’ll be the hired gun of the film’s primary antagonist, ONSLAUGHT. Manganiello has long been on WB’s radar, having come in second to Henry Cavill for the role of Superman.
He also kind of reminds me of Manu Bennett, who plays Deathstroke on Arrow, but maybe I need to get my eyes checked.
– Dominic Cooper, who famously plays the younger version of Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, may be wading into the comic book waters again; this time he’s being considered for the role of Jesse Custer in AMC’s upcoming Preacher pilot, via a rumor published by The Tracking Board. Much to a few of my friends’ dismay, I’ve never read Preacher, so I’ll let you decide if Cooper would be a good fit or not.
– After yesterday’s Star Wars announcement, we’re already starting to see some schedule shuffling. The first of which being the already announced sequel to Fantastic Four is moving back a week. Fantastic Four 2 will now open on June 9, 2017 (from its original June 2nd, 2017 date). Whether the movie actually happens or not still depends on the success of this year’s first installment. On that note, here are some new images from Total Film (via GamesRadar) that showcase the team’s new costumes, with nary a 4 in sight.
– Lastly, per Disney-Pixar’s Twitter, Josh Cooley, the story head for the upcoming Inside Out, has been announced as the co-director for Toy Story 4. He’ll be working with John Lasseter in the role. For this one, my interest is mostly piqued by Rashida Jones co-writing the script with Will McCormack.

Michael Golden is part of an elite class to emerge out of comics Bronze Age(1970-85), along with other legends like Mike Zeck, Frank Miller, and John Byrne. He worked briefly at DC in the late 70’s, before making a name for himself over at Marvel with his dynamic, detailed drawing style on the miniature superhero team, The Micronauts. Golden would go onto create one of the most popular Uncanny X-Men characters, Rogue, with writer Chris Claremont, and enjoyed critical success with his work on The ‘Nam(a war comic written & edited by Vietnam War veterans Doug Murray & Larry Hama).

We’re creeping ever so closer to the end of the week, here’s your round-up of entertainment headlines for this morning!
– While on the press tour for his new film, Chappie; Neill Blomkamp has, to no one’s surprise, been receiving a number of questions about his recently announced Alien sequel. Having Sigourney Weaver on-hand as a part of the Chappie cast likely provided additional temptation in that regard. SkyMovies (via Collider) got some pretty great details out of him in a recent interview, where he discussed the continuity of the new film:
I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens, so it’s Alien, Aliens and then this film.
From the sounds of things, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection are being wiped from continuity, which I have mixed feelings about if that is indeed how things play out. It didn’t quite work for Superman Returns, and I’d be worried that it might lead to confusion here.
Blomkamp continued:
It’s a Freudian nightmare. That element to me is what is so appealing; to put the audience on the edge of their seat the whole time in a traditional, monster-stalking-you, dark-corridor-way. I love that. And then when you mix in all of the deign elements and the life cycle of the alien, it’s a powder keg of creativity for me.
Weaver also chimed in, basically confirming her involvement and the return of Ripley:
I would love to take Ripley out of sort of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story. So when someone like Neill Blomkamp said, ‘Well, I’m interested in finishing the story,’ my little ears perked up… I think it’s a great series. It deserves a proper ending—I know the fans would love that.
– Empire has some new photos of Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell from Fantastic Four:
CBM has also pulled together the interview that features in that issue with director Josh Trank.
– Empire also brings us new Spectre images featuring Dave Bautista as henchman Mr. Hinx:
Bautista had this to say about taking on the role:
When I came over to meet Sam [Mendes], I only asked two questions. I asked him if Mr. Hinx was a badass. He said, ‘Yes, he’s a badass.’ I said, ‘Well, is Mr. Hinx intelligent?’ He said, ‘Very.’ That’s what I like about Mr. Hinx. He’s very well-dressed and very well-mannered. I’m not just here to fight people. He has a sense of humour. He definitely knows what a metaphor is.
Lea Seydoux also spoke to her new character, Dr. Madeleine Swann, seen below:
I don’t consider myself a Bond girl. I think I’m not really the stereotyped Bond girl. I feel quite different. You can’t be like, ‘Oh, James.’ You have to find something else. She’s not a fighter, she’s a doctor. She fights in another way.
The production team has also released another video featuring Sam Mendes elaborating on why he returned for another Bond film:
– Lastly, Steven Markus and Christopher McFeely spoke with Entertainment Weekly (spoilers at the link) about Agent Carter‘s finale, indicating that if a Season 2 were to happen they’d like to focus on Peggy’s background further:
MARKUS: When we were figuring out the show and the backstory of the show, we had a really nice story about who Peggy is and where she came from. We just didn’t have any time. I would love to tell that story.
MCFEELY: That’s one of our strongest ideas for the second season: What makes Peggy, Peggy? We like what Peggy is, but if you ask some hard questions, you might wonder: but why is she that way? We have some thoughts on that.
Sadly, the future of the series is in doubt given its ratings struggle. This week’s finale only pulled a 1.3 in the 18-49 demo, which on ABC is not a good sign.

We can’t really improve on the Oothousers write-up on the latest Fantastic Four movie developments. Fox has so little fait in this film that they keep pushing it back and forgetting to talk about it—making Marvel’s Isaac Perlmutter’s ban on the FF perhaps for the first time a bit sympathetic.
Anyway, after a bunch of strange reveals about the films such as the superpowers being treated as disabilities and cast members being forbidden to read the comics by director Josh Trank, actor Toby Kebbell who plays Doctor Doom in the movie has made the most amazing reveal of all:
I’m excited to see it too, and my nerves really…The only thing I can tease you about is what I worked on most was the voice because nobody—even in the cartoons, when I was watching them I was like, “So where’s he from?” There’s a mild change and I’ll tell you because of our history.
He’s Victor Domashev, not Victor Von Doom in our story. And I’m sure I’ll be sent to jail for telling you that. The Doom in ours—I’m a programmer. Very anti-social programmer. And on blogging sites I’m “Doom”.
#doomergate? It’s about ethics in the Baxter Building? Is Amanda Palmer writing “A Poem for Domashev?”
My email is full of folk begging me to confirm that this is some kind of Clickhole-like joke and they are just playing the audience. Are they? Maybe the real von Doom WOULD be an annoyed internet troll these days.
The new FF film opens August 7, 2015. August is traditionally a sink hold for action films, despite Guardians of th Galaxy winning out of the slot. Will FF have as much luck?

What would Ben Grimm do?
After a few months of truly bizarre speculation across the internet, and denial from the publisher, Marvel confirmed this morning at their Axel-In-Charge panel at New York Comic-Con that they are indeed canceling their main Fantastic Four title. The publisher seems like they are planning something new for their roster of Fantastic Four characters, but this is mere speculation at this point. The comic is ending in 2015. CBR ran a quote from the panel that featured current author of the title James Robinson speaking on the surprise cancellation of the comic.
“That’s the thing — everyone’s upset now because the book is going away,” Robinson said. “Are they buying the book? I don’t know if they are. A lot of it is just people like to get online and moan and complain. I guarantee you if you kill of any character, the most obscure character, you’ll get one angry person that claims it was their favorite character. Jack Frost, golden age character, they’ve done something to him. Where’s the razor blades, I’m slashing my wrists. People do that on the internet, so you have to take that with a grain of salt.”
The author deserves some massive props for talking about his run on the title so honestly. Hopefully this coming change for the Fantastic Four will be what is necessary to get the book boosted into the top 50 of the Diamond Sales charts. Marvel’s first family deserves it after all.

Before Marvel became the toast of tinsel town, there were some pretty dreadful Marvel-based movies—and I’m not just talking Howard the Duck. Dolph Lundgren starred as The Punisher in 1989, but the movie got only a very limited theatrical release. A 1990 version of Captain America starring JD Salinger’s son, Matt, was so bad it sat on the shelf fro two years before being released in the dead of night on cable. BU worst of all was a Fantastic Four movie produced by legendary horror filmmaker Roger Corman that never got released at all, although bootlegs have long circulated. (There’s an awful JLA pilot from a little bit later that is also pretty horrid, but not much worse than the Superboy TV show that actually aired for a season.) All this would change just three years later with the release of the first Blade movie, and the avalanche of superhero movies would follow to the point where, they are the bread and butter of the whole filmmaking industry.
But if you want to see how NOT to do it, some folks have put together a whole documentary about the making of the FF film, called DOOMED: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR And you can see a sneak peek above. According to the PR, this documentary will “shed new light on the mysterious circumstances surrounding this legendary cult classic and “lost” Roger Corman film, THE FANTASTIC FOUR.” I didn’t know that there were that many secrets besides the movie being very rough, but director Marty Langford and executive producer Mark Sikes will reveal all in this film. One of the problems, as revealed in the above snippet, is that they had only $1 million to make the movie. Even in 1994 that didn’t get you very far. (although I do like the non-CGI Thing a bit.) Marvel historian Sean Howe will appear, and I’m sure there will be lots of dirt in the final film.
The movie was partially crowdfunded, and you can follow along with more news on how to see it on Facebook of course.

By Steve Morris
Marvel have spent this week showing off shiny covers for their Marvel NOOOWWWWWW!!! rebranding, and I’ll gather them all together at the end of the week (Friday, just so you know) for you to look into. But USA Today have today revealed the first cover for Matt Fraction and Mike Allred’s ‘FF’ series and, well…
So the book is heading in a radically new direction, you can see. Not only does the focus seem to have moved away from the students enrolled at Reed Richards’ ‘Future Foundation’, but it’s moved towards Ant Man, Medusa, She-Hulk, and… a woman wearing a Thing costume.
This sounds like exactly the kind of project which would play to Fraction and Allred. Apparently the new female character is called ‘Miss Thing’, which means she’ll likely become an instant fan-favourite amongst camp people. And can you even imagine how exciting the world is, now that we know Mike Allred is going to be drawing She-Hulk EVERY MONTH? These are golden times.
Over on the Fraction/Mark Bagley Fantastic Four title, it looks like Valeria and Franklin Richards are going to head back to their family for some cosmic adventuring, too. Fraction seems set on making this a big adventure series, with all six members of the Fantastic Four back together in the same book.
Now for the sad news. The article also confirms that Fraction’s Defenders – which had a massive decline in sales figures – will be concluding with issue #12 in November. From one She-Hulk to another, and one team to two teams. Sad to see the book go, but it’ll be interesting to see what this means for Marvel’s lineup next year. Will Dr Strange or Iron Fist show up somewhere else, now? Is this the last time we’ll get to see a Defenders title?

Last Thursday, during my lunch break, I headed over to the rebooted Forbidden Planet. DC had reprinted four Wonder Woman stories from “Adventures in the DCU” as “DC COMICS PRESENTS: WONDER WOMAN ADVENTURES #1“. Sure, I would get a copy as part of my monthly box of comp copies, but I couldn’t wait to read it, and I’ll pass on the extra issue to my super-smart niece in Colorado.
So first I checked the back wall of recent releases, and scanned every title. That’s when I discovered something unexpected, and, ultimately, amazing and fantastic:
Now, Fantastic Four was the first series I followed after getting hooked on Spider-Man. I knew that Marvel usually did a decent job with Fantastic Four annuals, presenting fun, done-in-one stories! So I picked it up, and flipped it open. Here’s why I bought it, and why I recommend it to you:
- It’s drawn, and WRITTEN, by Alan Davis, so you know the art and story are gonna be good!
- It’s Ben and Johnny, housesitting the Baxter Building (or whatever it’s called now) while Reed and Sue go on vacation. (If that were the only story, I’d still read it!)
- It features Davis’ ClanDestine. Don’t know who they are? Short form: a human and a genie fall in love and sire a family of paranormal humans who live separate from the rest of the Marvel Universe (although they have encountered the X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Silver Surfer on occasion.)
- It’s got time travel, famous people, and Doctor Strange!
- And…something I didn’t discover until I turned to the last page, where the digital code is found: it’s the first of THREE Alan Davis annuals! The story continues in Daredevil, and finishes in Wolverine! (Hmm… it looks like the variant covers form a complete image. Might there be a poster in the future?)

The final teaser image for Marvel’s week of NOW! has gone up on the USA Today’s website, revealing that Matt Fraction will be writing a relaunch of both Fantastic Four and the FF. Joining him will be Mark Bagley and Mike Allred.
Bagley will draw the Fantastic Four series while Mike Allred will draw FF, which follows the ‘Future Foundation’ school set up by Reed Richards during Jonathan Hickman’s soon-concluding run with the team. MIKE! ALLRED! Dunno about you, but I always feel a compulsion to shout his name out like a cheerleader and wave my pom-poms.
This will be slightly worrying for fans of Bagley’s Icon series ‘Brilliant’, as there’s no word yet on if this announcement will affect the shipping of the book/mean the book has been cancelled. It does mean, however, that Marvel aren’t going to rename the team ’The Uncanny Fantastic Four’ or ‘FF Avengers’. So there’s another trend bucked by the First Family of Comics!
The teaser image above only relates to FF, I know. USA Today say they have the second one, so we’re just going to have to trust them until they decide to actually put it online. You wouldn’t have had this delay if you’d just sent the image to us, Marvel!
This means we now have confirmation for Uncanny Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four, FF, Thor, Deadpool, and All-New X-Men as part of Marvel NOW! That’s half the books, with another half yet to be announced. Anyone for a solo PIXIE series? Time to make some noise if there is! Let’s lead a charge! Get your pom-poms out.

If you look at the present calendar:
Assuming a three year gap in production of sequels…
2019 is full. However, if Captain Marvel or Inhumans is delayed, then a Dr. Strange sequel (2016>>>2019) could be scheduled.
2020 has two possible sequels from 2017 which probably will be scheduled: Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
What does Marvel have to lose from X-TV?
Ratings. Especially as Marvel grooms the Inhumans to fill that gap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although, it does allow Marvel to get more shows on TV, to compete with DC which will have EIGHT series on four different networks during the 2015-16 season. (And another 8-9 in development.)
I liked the Legend series, partly for the great covers, partly because it was self-contained yet told an interesting story.
It was already debunked that Marvel got FF rights back.
