9. Are Fox and Marvel finally striking some deals? Rumors abound!

Yesterday, it was announced that Fox, who holds the film rights for the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, struck an agreement with Marvel in order to pursue their long held goal of putting another X-Men television series back on the screen. The last time this occurred in live action, it gave us such works of […]

10. Josh Trank implies that you can blame the studio for Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four opens today (technically last night), and the reception that’s greeted the film has been venomous. I didn’t like it either, but I don’t think it’s “9% on Rotten Tomatoes bad”. After seeing the film a week ago, the question that immediately sprung to my mind was: how much of this film represented director Josh […]

11. Review: Fantastic Four, a case of botched vision colliding with studio demands

In the current mold of superhero film-making, it’s difficult to escape the prevailing wisdom of how studios formulate their respective franchises. There’s the Marvel method, which embraces the colorful comic tones and inherent silliness of the medium, but at its worst can lead to tedium. The efforts of other studios (Fox, WB, Sony) in recent […]

12. The Deadpool trailer brings R-rated superhero action to the cinemaplex

A version of this trailer debuted at SDCC, but now you too can get a glimpse at what just a few thousand got to see in person a few weeks ago (unless you watched a bootleg cam recording). Debuting on tonight’s “Conan”, here’s the red-band, very R-rated, Deadpool trailer:

Just like Alexander posited a few days ago, it turns out that Channing Tatum was indeed undergoing a bit of public negotiating regarding his upcoming role in the X-Men spin-off, Gambit. 15. Your first look at the film versions of Psylocke and Apocalypse in this month’s Entertainment Weekly

ew-cover-1373-xmen

As per usual, Entertainment Weekly has the first concrete details and images for another upcoming superhero blockbuster, this time the newest Bryan Singer-directed X-Men adventure: X-Men: Apocalypse.

In the above cover, you can see how screen-accurate to 90’s era comics Singer and team are aiming for in regard to Olivia Munn‘s Psylocke, and Oscar Isaac is practically unrecognizable as the title villain.

The latter spoke to his new role in the same report:

“He’s believed to be the first mutant, whatever that means,” says star Oscar Isaac. “He is the creative-slash-destructive force of this earth. When things start to go awry, or when things seem like they’re not moving towards evolution, he destroys those civilizations.”

EW also elaborates a bit on just what Apocalypse is up to in the film and the shape of his Four Horsemen:

As the new film opens, 10 years have passed and Raven (Lawrence), Charles (McAvoy), and Erik (Michael Fassbender) are still estranged, but not for much longer. The Big A awakens from his Egyptian tomb, sizes up the global ’80s vibe, and decides he’s not down with the Reagan era. “It’s a chaotic world of conflict and war and destruction,” Singer says. “It’s one giant civilization that now requires one giant culling. That’s why he needs special assistants in this process.” He finds teenage Storm living on the streets in Cairo, Angel (Ben Hardy) duking it out in a fight club in Berlin, and Psylocke (Olivia Munn) working behind the Iron Curtain for the mutant-broker Caliban. But his big get is Erik, who has been attempting to live a “normal” life in Poland. “He’s fallen in love and he’s basically left his metal ways behind,” Fassbender says. Pretty quickly, though, his world is shattered and “normal” is no longer an option. Says Fassbender, “Apocalypse finds Erik at a low ebb and recruits him.”

An interesting new take on this era of the team, and this might prove to be a good way to keep Fassbender around for another film. Or perhaps not, as I found the leaked footage out of SDCC to be pretty underwhelming (and I thought the same for the Deadpool trailer). Either way, we’ll find out next May.

16. Rupert Wyatt to direct Gambit solo feature

gambit-x-men-movie-writer

From a report in EW today, Rupert Wyatt, whose Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a feature I found to be a surprising delight a few years back, has been enlisted by 20th Century Fox to take on the (presumably rebooted) solo debut of the card-flinging mutant Gambit.

Gambit, which is set to hit screens in October of next year, joins a line-up of X-Men spin-off features for the studio that includes next March’s Ryan Reynolds-starring Deadpool and the Josh Boone directed The New Mutants, which currently has no release window. Channing Tatum will star in Gambit, and take over the role of Remy LeBeau from Taylor Kitsch, who played the character in the much-derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

2016 is looking to be the year of the X-Men presumably, with Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Gambit all hitting the screen within those 12 months. Gambit is scheduled to open on October 7, 2016.

17. Lumberjanes is about to become a major motion picture

lumberjanes-feature

One of the big critical darlings of last year, Lumberjanes is a fabulous comic series written by Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis, with art by Brooke Allen and co-created by BOOM! Studios editor Shannon Watters.

For those unfamiliar, it follows a group of young women spending the summer at scout camp, where they encounter supernatural phenomena like Yetis, giant falcons and the like. It started out as an eight issue mini-series, but demand proved so high, that BOOM! decided to make it an ongoing. Lumberjanes is great fun and, for my money, a terribly important and accessible all-ages comic.

It’s no surprise then that Hollywood would eventually come calling, and so via 20th Century Fox in a report from The Wrap, a movie adaptation is on the way with Boom’s Ross Richie, Stephen Christy, and Adam Yoelin teaming up with Fox’s Kira Goldberg and Ryan Jones to produce the film. Will Widger, who is best known for his 2014 “Black List” script, The Munchkin, will take on writing duties for the film.

It’s a bit of a bummer that an all female created series, that focuses on female characters, has a male screenwriter; but his script for The Munchkin (which is pitched as a Chinatown type thriller about the world of The Wizard of Oz) sounds idiosyncratic enough that he may have a good spin on the material.

18. There’s going to be another live-action League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

league-of-extraordinary-gentleman-700x379

I distinctly remember going to the theater in 2003 to see the James Robinson-written adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. At the time, I hadn’t read the Alan Moore/Kevin O’Neill series, I just happened to be drawn in by what I saw as an ingenious premise: the Justice League of Victorian literature.

Even my dad, who had no use for superhero movies pre Iron Man/Dark Knight/Avengers, was excited about the prospect.

You can imagine how deflating that day actually was: a gun-wielding Tom Sawyer, a barely interested Sean Connery, and so. much. camp. When the released just a few months later Underworld was more entertaining by comparison, you know there’s a problem.

I eventually discovered the source material and devoured it voraciously. I even love the somewhat more divisive Century volume. For a good long while I yearned for Fox to go back and correct this grievous cinematic misstep. Then Showtime introduced Penny Dreadful, which took the same basic concept with a number of different characters (Mina Harker’s father, Dr. Frankenstein, another live action shot at Dorian Gray, vampires, witches, etc) and toned down the broader action elements in favor of a healthy dose of “Hammer horror”. It was the League adaptation I always wanted, just without the name or central characters, and it is perhaps the strongest series that the premium channel has ever produced.

And of course now, Fox has announced plans to reboot The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for the big screen per Variety. Just two years ago, there was talk of it becoming a television series with apparent go-to genre guy Michael Green as the showrunner, but that ended up not moving forward. Now producer John Davis will be teaming with Ira Napoliello and Matt Reilly to bring this new version to fruition, though no writers have been announced as of yet.

Can it succeed? Possibly! But given how Fox has generally mishandled its comic book franchises and fumbled with the League before, it’s tough to get excited on my end. Then again, we are talking about what I think is Moore’s best work from the ABC era to the current period, so the studio definitely has a tough row to hoe. In the meantime, season 2 of Penny Dreadful is wonderful thus far.

19. Fox hires Josh Boone to write/direct The New Mutants

new mutants

Per Deadline, 20th Century Fox has closed a deal on its latest X-Men franchise spin-off, as writer/director Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars) is set to co-script and direct The New Mutants. Boone will co-write the script for this new stand-alone with Knate Gwaltney (Cardboard Boxer).

Fox’s Marvel “godfather” Simon Kinberg, who will be producing The New Mutants alongside Lauren Shuler Donner, had this to say:

We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe. And so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.

I’m not much of an X-Men fan, but I always remember loving The New Mutants, especially once Bill Sienkiewicz came on board with some of most gorgeously detailed art my young eyes had ever seen in a comic. Eventually the Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod created series became X-Force, which has also been rumored for the big screen treatment. It’s likely that this project may stalled that possibility for the time being.

Boone has a busy schedule of late, as he’s currently set to adapt Anne Rice‘s The Vampire Chronicles for Universal (in another attempt at jump-starting that series) and Stephen King‘s The Stand for Warner Bros. It’s likely this film will see release in 2018.

20. Entertainment Round-Up: New Nightcrawler concept art, Daniel Brühl confirms his role as Baron Zemo, Michael Green to pen Wolverine sequel

It’s the start of another week, here are the headlines that are making waves this morning!

Bryan Singer is keeping the teases rolling for X-Men: Apocalypse, this time around, he shared some concept art for Kodi Smit-McPhee’s younger version of Nightcrawler:

nightcrawler-x-men-apocalyse

This new Nightcrawler isn’t too terribly far afield from Alan Cumming‘s appearance in X2: X-Men United, which is surely the point. I do wonder though if we’ll get any explicit connection between Kurt and Mystique (and/or Azazel), perhaps that’s a road best not taken.

– Even though we pretty much knew this already, Daniel Brühl recently confirmed in an interview with The Independent that he will indeed by playing Baron Helmut Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, as he responded in the affirmative to a question about his upcoming role:

“I think I can tell you that without being thrown into Marvel prison… For the first few days I’ll walk around like a little boy, just amazed by the megalomania of it. It’s such a huge project. We could do 20 films with the budget.”

So there you have it folks, along with whatever is happening between Iron Man and Captain America, the appearances of Spider-Man and Black Panther, and whatever angle the Winter Soldier story takes, we’re also getting Baron Zemo. This movie is looking more stuffed than Age of Ultron.

– Over the weekend, and somewhat lost in the hoopla over Jared Leto’s Joker, TheWrap reported that Green Lantern and Blade Runner sequel screenwriter Michael Green will be penning the upcoming sequel to James Mangold‘s The Wolverine.

I’m not sure how much blame Green should take for what ended up on screen in Green Lantern, but given his recent high profile gigs (that also includes work on Prometheus 2), we’ll keep our fingers crossed that it was just an aberration on his resume.

Hugh Jackman has stated that this will be his final outing as Logan, so perhaps the time is right to adapt Old Man Logan, especially since it’ll be a while before the Wolverine films and the X-Men films catch up to each other on the timeline, most likely. The new film is scheduled to release on March 3, 2017.

– For those interested, Fox has updated the Fantastic Four movie website to now include bios of the team, with some interesting descriptions of their powers; for example Reed now has abilities that “can warp the space around him, and appear to stretch his body into impossible forms and to incredible lengths.”

Check out further details at the site.

22. X-Men: Apocalypse adds another 90’s favorite as Olivia Munn is cast as Psylocke

olivia_munn_1280_800_oct032010

Bryan Singer keeps on popping out new mutants for his latest X-Men opus, after roping in a new Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler, Jubilee and Archangel; he’s now found another one to add to the ranks as Olivia Munn (The Newsroom) will be playing Psylocke.

This is sure to be a pick to get a number of folks excited as Munn was often a fan casting choice for superhero roles (I always thought she would make a great Wonder Woman). She’d technically be the second Psylocke to appear on the big screen, as the character appeared as a minor villain in X-Men: The Last Stand for some inexplicable reason (played by Meiling Melançon).

One has to assume that all of the more complicated elements of her character will likely be tossed aside. The important stuff: she was created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe in Captain Britain and eventually became a 90’s X-Men icon (along with Gambit, Jubilee, and the like) after she was redesigned by Claremont and Jim Lee (and also took over the body of a ninja).

X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27, 2016, in a year that is looking like *THE* big one for superhero films given that it comes on the heels of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March, and Captain America: Civil War that same month.

23. Ryan Reynolds pulls a Burt Reynolds in the first official image for Deadpool

deadpool

In an image posted today on his Twitter account, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is all suited up to reprise his old role of Wade Wilson.

This is definitely a far cry from the days of the “sewn-up mouth” Deadpool that appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I think it’s pretty safe to assume they won’t even acknowledge that such a thing even happened, unless it’s in a fun fourth-wall breaking way.

This Deadpool basically looks like the costume as it appeared in the all-CGI proof of concept footage that leaked out last Summer, and received such a rapturous reception that this retooled take on the character got a green light right away.

Here’s the official synopsis of the film, directed by Tim Miller, which releases on February 12, 2016:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

24. Entertainment Round-Up: Your first look at The Thing in Fantastic Four, Jubilee is cast in X-Men: Apocalypse, Idris Elba for Star Trek 3?

– An intrepid Instagrammer snapped this photo of the international banner for Fantastic Four, giving us our first look at Jamie Bell as The Thing along with the rest of the cast similarly powered up. Here it is via Spencer over at ComingSoon. On the whole, it’s hard not to be an improvement over how Ben Grimm was presented in the last two films, but how it works on screen will tell the tale.

Bryan Singer has added another mutant to X-Men: Apocalypse, this time breaking with the 80’s set canon and bringing Lana Condor on as Jubilee. He announced the newest X-Men teammate on his Instagram:

I’d officially like to welcome our newest mutant #JubilationLee, #Jubilee @LanaCondor to #XMEN #Apocalypse

Star Trek 3 is still slowly plugging along and Variety reports that Paramount may have its eyes on fan-casting favorite Idris Elba to play the yet to be revealed villain in the 2016 release. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are co-writing this third entry in the rebooted series for director Justin Lin. Variety also states that The Klingons are rumored to be the main adversary of the film.

25. Entertainment Round-Up: Allred designs iZombie’s Main Titles, A True Blood star might be Deathstroke, Dominic Cooper eyed for Preacher, Fantastic Four 2 moves back a week

izombie

Happiest of Fridays everyone! I just got back from a big lobbying trip in D.C. for a cause I’m pretty passionate about, so I’ve been a little off the radar this week. Let’s get back into the swing of things:

iZombie‘s premiere is next week, and while its delays have left me feeling a little nervous about the potential end product, involving Mike Allred in any capacity is a nice way to salve that wound. He’s been tasked with designing the opening credits, and they’re lovely as anything he touches usually is:

Latino Review is reporting that former True Blood star and one-time Flash Thompson actor Joe Manganiello is the front-runner to play Deathstroke in David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad. According to their sources, he’ll be the hired gun of the film’s primary antagonist, ONSLAUGHT. Manganiello has long been on WB’s radar, having come in second to Henry Cavill for the role of Superman.

He also kind of reminds me of Manu Bennett, who plays Deathstroke on Arrow, but maybe I need to get my eyes checked.

Dominic Cooper, who famously plays the younger version of Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, may be wading into the comic book waters again; this time he’s being considered for the role of Jesse Custer in AMC’s upcoming Preacher pilot, via a rumor published by The Tracking Board. Much to a few of my friends’ dismay, I’ve never read Preacher, so I’ll let you decide if Cooper would be a good fit or not.

– After yesterday’s Star Wars announcement, we’re already starting to see some schedule shuffling. The first of which being the already announced sequel to Fantastic Four is moving back a week. Fantastic Four 2 will now open on June 9, 2017 (from its original June 2nd, 2017 date). Whether the movie actually happens or not still depends on the success of this year’s first installment. On that note, here are some new images from Total Film (via GamesRadar) that showcase the team’s new costumes, with nary a 4 in sight.

– Lastly, per Disney-Pixar’s Twitter, Josh Cooley, the story head for the upcoming Inside Out, has been announced as the co-director for Toy Story 4. He’ll be working with John Lasseter in the role. For this one, my interest is mostly piqued by Rashida Jones co-writing the script with Will McCormack.
