{hangs head in shame:( }
crazy last couple of weeks....between a commission, matting and framing
prints for some friends who are always kind enough to buy my work for their littles and a pretty intense flare up in my right arm from all the osteoarthritis, radiculopathy, nerve damage and chronic inflammation in my cervical spine (something i know i rarely talk about in this blog) after three neck surgeries. i guess i've always been one to try and not dwell on the not so positive stuff but perhaps it helps others who deal with pain just to follow their biggest and most loved passion. there is (and always will be) a FERAL need in me to create. maybe you have to be an artist to really get it. you just can't live without out. really. so, apologies for the lack of posts but if you know me personally, you know my drive far outweighs my tiny stature. in the words of my favorite Pixar film, Meet the Robinsons, "KEEP MOVING FORWARD!!"
now to what i've been up to (besides the pain)...a sweet commission from one of my drawings (FOR SALE
HERE) which i turned into a painting for a sweet little ginger. i will be posting the finished painting as well as offering prints of her very soon! you'll have to check back and see...;)
here are some WIP pics as well as a cute little blue penguin i sketched...just because.
This one is from a while back but it's a snowman.
Have some Winter fun!
Illustration from
The Wonderful Woods
Steven James Petruccio
For the last few weeks I've been slowly but surely making progress on a mural for the newest incarnation of our local bookstore -- congrats @trailsendbooks :) Its BIG, so you can't even see the life-sized polar bear and penguin over in the "arctic annex" of this photo, but its also bright and colorful and hopefully a nice complement to the kid's section in the great new space - hooray! Washington authors and illustrators be sure to reach out to Trails End to sign stock or schedule a reading when you find yourself headed to Winthrop. Summer and winter are the busier season's for sure, but they are really hoping to parlay the new space into bigger and better author events and excellent bookstore activities all year 'round. Happy holidays!

autumn serenade 6x6, mixed media on canvas panel ©the enchanted easel 2016 |
between a cute little bird and a wide eyed baby bear...an "autumn serenade".
this is the second (but it sure won't be the last) piece i created this summer when i was trying my hand at mixed media. can i just tell you what a total blast it was creating this piece?! so much fun and a bit out of the box for me as i am a SUPER DUPER AWESOME planner. seriously. it's one of my finer traits....i think so, anyway. ;) this little creation was kind of spontaneous....kind of....
i knew i wanted to do a bear with an autumn color scheme. the rest just kind of happened the more i kept adding different layers, different supplies...and, being my absolute own worst critic well, i'm rather pleased with the way it turned out. i mean, c'mon..look at the face on the baby bear...you just gotta love him. :)
PRINTS available
here. ORIGINAL PAINTING is FOR SALE. contact me
here if interested.
also, here's a
link to sweet ophelia...a colorful owl done in this same mixed media style.
perhaps 2017 will bring about some more of these little *experiments*....

a few weeks ago i had a commission request for a little kokeshi from the sweetest lady via
etsy. obsessed with all things japanese/kawaii since birth, well she didn't have to ask me twice. ;) her response to the finished painting made the rest of my year..
."That is the cutest thing I have ever seen!! Thank you so much - I am so excited about it. It is perfect colors, perfect sweet girl. Our grandma was Japanese so it means a lot to us to have something to remind us of her!"

few and far between 4x12, acrylic on canvas ©the enchanted easel 2016 |
inspired by my love of blue poppies and red heads..."few and far between". my latest painting.
i truly loved painting this one. the 4"x12" was an interesting size for me and one on which i had never before painted. also, the color scheme will go down as one of my favorites. i've always loved red heads. as a little girl, i remember always wanting to have red hair and green eyes (umm, yeah. that might have passed me by, being 110% italian....). ok, back to the painting....
blue poppies. another favorite. last year, on a trip to longwood gardens, i completely fell in love with these rare beauties. talk about GORGEOUS. just made to be painted. my original thought was a watercolor but then my creative little brain thought i'd merge two of my loves into one painting. "few and far between" was born.
PRINTS AVAILABLE
HERE. also, coming in a few weeks to my
shop will be PENDANT NECKLACES. crafted with my own two little hands. every single one of them. this beauty will be included in those. it's going to be good....:)

these last couple of weeks. working on multiple paintings at once. and that's just the way i like it. :)
for starters, i finally got around to finishing up this little red head beauty. along with some blue poppies, this is one of my favorites. i worked on a 4"x12" canvas...an odd size for me but i wanted to challenge myself, combustion wise. really liking the way it turned out. plus, it included two of my favorite things...red heads and blue poppies. rare beauties, indeed. i'll be sharing the finished piece next week. prints will be available then as well.
also, i've been thinking about doing a small series of mixed media animals for quite a bit. i have SO many art supplies in my home/studio well, it's like
Michael's,
AC Moore and
Dick Blick in on humble little abode. from scrapbook papers to every kind of pencil/paint/pastel known to man....i figured it was time to stop staring at all of them and DO SOMETHING with them. below are some sneak peeks....
hopefully, emerging from all this creative chaos will be a cute series of fall themed animals. stay tuned....

i'm a big believer in evolution as an artist. in the past couple of years alone, my style has changed/evolved into a place where i feel happy, at peace and comfortable...not to say that i won't keep pushing myself to be the best painter i can be but i am very much enjoying the new style my art has taken on. with that being said...
here are some peeks at the painting i am currently wrapping up this week. little bit of sakura blossoms (my favorite), little bit of nighttime (the insomniac that i am), a strawberry moon, some cotton candy clouds, a sweet little sleeping elephant (
maggie) and myself, of course.
can't wait to share it in june (when of course i will have to redo the website and blog to match)!
I just finished the artwork for an upcoming book, FOOTLOOSE by Kenny Loggins. The book is being published by Moondance Press/ Quarto Publishing Group. I'm really excited about this one and I think a lot of people are going to be putting on their dancin' shoes in October. The original song (FOOTLOOSE) has been re-written to become a fun story that takes place after hours, at the zoo. The art is full of animals, color, texture, fun and a whole lot of DANCIN'!
Plus, while painting these illustrations, I listened to Kenny's
Return to Pooh Corner CD. Pure magic. I usually don't work directly with the author but I spoke to Kenny about his vision for the story. His input made the story telling more complete.
So, this October...

A big box of shiny new books landed on my doorstep. Memoirs of a Parrot is the fourth "memoir" book, written by the very talented Devin Scillian and published by Sleeping Bear Press.
 |
"Yay, new books!" |
When I read that a parrot would be the main character, I had to choose an African Grey parrot. I have fond childhood memories of my grandpa and his African Grey, named
Chico. I chose a Hyacinth Macaw as the other parrot in the story. Mostly because of the color. I live in Ohio and Devin Scillian lives in Michigan, so it just made sense to use Ohio State (scarlet and grey) and Michigan colors (maze and blue). Plus, my wife's family is from the state up north (we're a "blended" family).
 |
A drawing that I did in High School of my grandpa and his parrot, Chico. |
Also, the main character (human) in the story plays a ukulele. I said, "hmmm, I need to get a ukulele (as reference) and begin my career as a ukulele rock star". Then I met Emily Arrow, a true ukulele rock star, so I bought one. Now I need to start practicing my ukulele
licks.
 |
"Hey, I think that I need a ukulele." |
Anyway, you must take a look at
Memoirs of a Parrot. It's got parrots, ukulele players and a very funny story.
 |
End papers from Memoirs of a Parrot. |
Thank you, Heather Hughes, Felicia Macheske and Sleeping Bear Press.
Now, back to the drawing board. -Tim

i thought it would be interetsing and fun to take a look into the creative process of my paintings...from thumbnail to sketch to paint palette(s) to the finsihed piece. i know i absolutely geek out looking at other artists WIPs so i thought i'd create a new album after each painting of the step by step process i use (and have used for YEARS) and share it with everyone. i work traditonally...pencil, paper, paint, canvas. i have much respect for the digital artists of the world yet for me, the passion and love will ALWAYS be in the traditonal tube of paint. old school...and proud.
this is part three in my series...the making of "sweet serenity", inspired by this year's pantone color palette.

you know, it's always such a rush to see my finished paintings on products such as tote bags, wall clocks, tech cases, etc. really. it never gets old. to say it's rewarding is well, an understatement. NOTHING makes me happier than painting/drawing. COUNTLESS hours go into building up a painting....from the initial sketching process to the layers of prep work for the canvas and then the of course adding the COLOR with layers of acrylic. every single brush stroke is a joy to make. then, to see it all done is overwhelming. (i must confess, i cry sometimes when i finish a painting...there's just SO much emotion and passion that i put into each and every single one. finishing one is definitely bittersweet...whether it's a commission or just one that i've painted that will sit in my studio until it sells one day). so back to Society6 and the A-MAZ-ING printing job they do....
the above pic shows the
tote bag (sized at 16x16) and the really awesome
"carry all pouch" (as they call it-available in THREE sizes-this is the medium). love love love how these turned out. so true to the original painting (which is FOR SALE-contact me if interested)...just lovely.
also ordered a few mugs for Mother's Days gifts that impressed me as well (pic coming soon). they have everything from wall clocks to throw pillows to duvet covers to stationary cards. click on over
here to the homepage and check out some other really great artists and their products. you won't be disappointed.

One of my newest projects is to illustrate a book, written by Kenny Loggins. He re-wrote the song, FOOTLOOSE, as a kids song and the book will have a CD in the back so readers can read along, follow the story with illustrations and dance to this great Kenny Loggins song.
Acrylic paint on a gessoed bristol board.

Here are two finished interior pages.
Here is the final art for the cover and end papers. The CD (FOOTLOOSE song) will be placed where the moon is positioned, inside the back cover. So, the moon will be the CD.
The new song sounds great. Kenny did a fantastic job of adding a kid spin to the original version. This is a lot of fun but I have a hard time painting, while dancing. Believe me, you'll be putting on your dancin' shoes, too!
