26. Interview with MATCHED author Ally Condie and Winner Announced!

Today is the day!!  Happy release day to MATCHED, one of our favorite books of the year, and our featured book in this month's Reading Clean Spotlight!  We are very excited to share this Q & A we did with Ally about her book!

-Describe Matched in five words.

*Star-crossed lovers, secrets, and poetry! (I think star-crossed is one word, right?)

No, I'm sorry, you have to do it again....lol!  :P

-The setting in Matched is such an amazing world!! Was it hard for you to create this world, or did the idea come to you naturally?

*The world was really fun to build, actually. I started with the idea of the Match Banquet and then basically built the world around it, thinking What kind of society would have to exist in order for this scenario (the Banquet) to take place?

I don't think I'd want to live in Cassia's world, but I have to say I would love to go to that Match Banquet!

-My favorite character in Matched was definitely Ky (although Kit and Abigaile liked Xander), did you have a favorite character?

*I'm so glad you liked Ky! I like both Ky and Xander, and I think this is because I gave them both different attributes of my husband. So they feel very equal to me. I guess that's not really a fair answer since I picked both of them. ;)

Yes, they were both VERY likable!!  I really don't know how Cassia could choose between them!

-What has been the greatest moment so far in this journey?

*Oooh, tough question. There have been a lot of really great moments. But the one that stands out to me happened before I even had an agent. I had sent MATCHED to my teenage sister, Hope, to read. She's very honest and an avid reader. When she called me up to tell me how she felt about it, she said, "I have a new favorite book." After I hung up the phone, I cried a little. It meant a lot to me that she enjoyed the book so much and I knew she wouldn't say it if she didn't mean it! And that moment gave me the confidence to start querying.

-Do you have any quirky/strange "must haves" when you're writing? What are they?

*I drink a LOT of water while I'm writing, and I have to wear one of my two special hoodies. They are magical and keep me the perfect temperature (my "office" is in the corner of the basement and it gets cold even in summer).

-What do you wish I had asked you? What's your answer?

*I wish you had asked me if I would like free tickets to the London Olympics in 2012 and I would have said, yes, please! (I'm dying to go--I love the Olympics and I studied abroad in London--but I don't think it's going to happen.) ;)

Hmmm....I think you may have cheated on that question :)  Oh, and don't tell Kit that you studied abroad in London,

27. Daisy Whitney Answers YOUR questions!! (and winner of The Mockingbirds ARC)

A couple of weeks ago, we had a giveaway for a copy of The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney.  To enter, we had you comment and tell us what you would ask Daisy if you had the chance.  Well, we never expected that she would actually take the time to answer all those questions, but she did!!  So, with a LOT of copy and pasting, I've put together your questions and her answers!  Read them all if you want, or scan for your name if you just want to know your answer!  ENJOY!  (And make sure you say thanks to this sweet and fantastic author!)  Daisy, I can't thank you enough for all the time and effort you put into answering everyone's questions!  You're awesome!!

(Read my review of The Mockingbirds)

The winner of the ARC of The Mockingbirds is Elise!  (I've sent an email)  Congrats!!

Daisy Whitney said...
Hey guys!! Great questions - I'm going to start answering them...

what advice do you have for people who want to become published YA authors?

@Zoe - My advice to people who want to become pubbed author is to write every day, edit your work relentlessly, connect with other like-minded writers who want to be published and critique each other's work, and then when you work is in the best shape possible - look for an agent!

Do you have an inspiring quote or message that you live by?

@Cialina - Good question! Some quotes I love include Randy Pausch' quote about enabling the dreams of others being as much fun as achieving your own dreams. Which translates into GIVE to others. I like this quote from Aristotle: "Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." And I like the quote from La Vie Boheme in Rent "To riding your bike midday past the three-piece suits" because that symbolizes to me the joy in pursuing your dreams!

Who is your favorite fictional character and why?

@Julia - I love Frankie Landau-Banks in the Dispreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks because she is a butt-kicking teen girl who stands up for what she believes in!

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH ITWhat are the 5 books that you would recommend to everyone?

28. And the Winners Are...

New words written: 1209
Total words written: 7231

So my word count for the first two days of NaNo is not very high, but I will say that I'm very happy with what I've written. Since I had a bit of a head start on this novel, I don't feel pressured to write junk just to build up my word count and that's a good thing.

Today when I was writing, I had a hard time visualizing the room where the scene took place. So I spent about an hour looking at pictures on the internet and then drawing the basic layout of my room. It might sound like a big waste of time, but it helped me tremendously to map it out like that, even though it did slow me down.

Obviously I will have to pick up the pace if I want to "win," but truth be told, that's not my goal. I've never won NaNo, but I do get a lot more written in November when I participate.

Now to the news you're really looking for -- who won the Something Old, Something New ARCs?

I used ClassTools.net because 1) it's free and 2) how cool is it to have the winning names show up on a slot machine? :-)

The winner of the Beautiful Creatures ARC is:

Congratulations, Riv! Drop me a note at solvangsherrie at gmail dot com to let me know your mailing address and I'll get the book out for you.

The winner of the Nightshade ARC is:

Congratulations, Krispy! Send your snail mail address to solvangsherrie at gmail dot com and I will send this out to you.

32. Announcing the winner of MOCKINGJAY!

We had a lot of great entires in our MOCKINGJAY giveaway this past week.

Honorable mentions go to Andy Porter with his hybrid creation, the PeetaGale.

"I was thinking of a PeetaGale. This is obviously a meld of the two love interests from the books. The powers of the hybrid are the ability to love like Peeta, and the ability to be loved like Gale. This is the perfect solution to Katniss' predicament."

I don't care who you are, that's just hilarious.

Also to Callie and Jen Hen, whose creations were super cute:

"What about a winged fox, called a Boxwing? (bird...fox...box) it would be airodynamic and light like a bird, and smart and furry like a fox, so it could evade predators and be insulated against cold wind...also, it would make a good predator." ~ Callie

"How about a porcuphant. Imagine a smaller sized elephant (large dog sized) with quills. Though super cute, they aren't very cuddly. The quills make catching them for circus' a little difficult." ~ Jen Hen

But I think we can all agree on the winner, whose muttation creation was well thought out and rang true to THE HUNGER GAMES tradition:

Congrats mary-j-59!!

Your wirewolf mutt was awesome!

"The wirewolf. In the 21st century, distressed by humankind's enduring hatred and fear of wolves, the brilliant geneticist Victoria Frankenstein collaborated with the biologist Nate Kipling to fit a small pack of Alaskan wolves with voiceboxes that would translate their howls to human speech. The pack survived, in spite of this interference, because non-engineered wolves were clearly impressed with the beauty of the wirewolves' howls. Gradually, the subspecies mingled with unaltered wolves and spread eastward. Today, the beautiful nightly howls, in full operatic voice and four- part harmony, can be heard as far east as Michigan, with rumors of wild wirewolves in New York and New England. It should be noted, though, that, even though they may howl in human words, these are still wild animals and should not be treated as pets. If you are fortunate enough to come across a wirewolf, give it space and observe it quietly.

This last point leads to what the wirewolf may symbolize. How one sees this beautiful animal depends on what one brings to the encounter. Some people see the wirewolf as an unfortunate reminder of humankind's desire to control nature and tame the untameable. Others see the beast as a pointer to the difference between artistic expression and rationality, while still others point it out as a clear example of altruism and the hope for true inter-species communication."

Please email me at mandy [at] yabookscentral [dot] com with your full name and mailing address, and I'll have a copy of MOCKINGJAY sent out right away.

Thanks, everyone, for playing!

33. Midnight Madness

It's midnight and I'm still awake, rewriting the opening chapters of a book I thought was done. Now I see that I was wrong and I'm excited with where it's going.

I don't know why, but I seem to write better when everyone else is at home asleep. No distractions from email, the phone or hungry family members. I've had all day to mull over the possibilities. The words flow better for me at night. I'll might regret it tomorrow when I see the bags under my eyes and I can't keep up with the kids. But it's been a good writing night. When I finish this post, I think I'll write a little more.

As it happens, the cutoff for entering the drawing for a Barrie Summy book was at midnight so I went ahead and did the drawing, right on time. Each person was assigned a number and the generator at random.org chose two winners for me:

Lydia Kang won I So Don't Do Mysteries

and woo-hoo, my critique partner and good friend

Lori Walker won I So Don't Do Makeup.

Congratulations ladies! I'll get these books out to you both right away.

38. And the winner is …

I want to give a big thanks to everyone who submitted entries in the ‘Strangest Trade Magazine’ title contest. It was a tough, tough decision to pick a winner. Some of the titles were playful, such as Spudman for people working in the potato industry, and Sheep! for sheep farmers. Miniature Donkey Talk was right up there as a finalist, but in looking at the editorial content, I thought it was more geared to hobbyists and pet owners than professionals raising miniature donkeys as a business.

In the final analysis, I went with “Flow Control,” submitted by Baltimore-based freelance writer Ami Spencer. In her entry, Ami wrote that “Flow Control” serves process, manufacturing and engineering industries with the primary end products and services in Food & Beverage. “Sounds more like something you’ll find in the personal hygiene aisle, though,” she wrote. What I loved was that it demonstrates how narrow a niche a trade magazine can cover. And you just can’t beat the innuendo. I’ve made calls on behalf of many odd-sounding publications, but just can’t imagine myself saying, “Hi, I’m Pat Curry from Flow Control Magazine,” with a straight face.

Ami’s prize is a free premium version of my e-course on writing for trade magazines, which is a $240 value. As my way of saying thank you to those who submitted titles, everyone who entered is eligible for a 10 percent discount on either version of the course.

Thanks again, everyone.

Pat

41. Swagology 101

Dear Friends,

Hope everyone is having a marvelous Monday!  Robin and I are both fully submerged on very tight novel deadlines, and we both have BIG presentations looming next week.  Wish we were doing them together-- that would be insanely cool!  Robin is jetting off to Dallas to do a presentation at the Museum of Art-- does she have the best publicist or what?  I am headed off to the Raisin Capitol of the World, Fresno, California.  Tres glamour! Seriously, I am very excited to be a keynote for a group of librarians at their annual retreat. Librarians, in my book-- RULE the world, or they should, for god's sake.

I am mainlining green smoothies to stay well throught it all, and feeling very grateful to Robin for keeping me supplied with the best homegrown spinach ever.  We are both seeing green these days, thanks to her spouse's bumper crop.  All very fitting, given that St. Patrick's Day is nearly upon us.  I am praying for the luck of the Irish that we both meet our deadlines easily, get the very fun presentations behind us, and are soon sitting together behind enormous salmon salads, happily recharging.

So, our topic de jour-- Swagology, or as my hair stylist calls is Schwa-a-agology.  Either way, swag generally refers to the free promtional booty one can find at conventions, or conferences-- and for the sake of our conversation, on your author signing table.  It is a hot topic among authors and illustrators, and there is usually a bit bemoaning about how little the publishing houses are able to help with the financing of swag.  In the writerly circles in which I run, which include a goodly group of esteemed writers, we might see an occasional poster, perhaps some reimbursement for postcards-- but generally, all the costs come from us.

And, the purpose of swag?  That depends on who you ask.  For me, it serves as both a welcome and an icebreaker in connecting with kids or adults who are looking at the book table.  (Or in the case of lurking introverts, trying to look like they are NOT looking at your table.)  And, as a former kid that had no disposable income, I love being able to give a child something totally free, no strings attached.  I give out postcards, candy, stick-on gem earrings, small notebooks, fun erasers, and pencils.  Only the postcards have my promotional information on them.  I keep meaning to order personalized pencils, and then I just never get it done.  I'd rather just give out cool pencils.  (But I'm absolutely not advising this--  I'm just confessing here, folks.)

Robin has beautiful items, and I get SSE next to her (Serious Swag Envy)  She has gorgeous pencils, scary/cool tattoos, Egyptian symbols, black cats, bookmarks, postcards.  She's good at this. And, she usually raffles off a really nice gift set of a few of these things packaged together.  (RL, am I forgetting anything?)

For those of you pre-published and those up and coming, I think swag works best when there is a specific and personal point to it.  Since  this will likely be your money you're spending, make sure that you know why you're doing this. I don't think I've ever heard of good swag being the thing that launched a book from obscurity to the Bestseller List.  I'd recommend that you start out small and conservatively, and see what items seem to be popular.  I think buying in bulk is good, but if  your order requires a forklift to get it into your garage, you might want to slow down a bit.

Consumables items are the best-- things people can actually use, not just some  medium for putting your name on it. That's why pencils, pens, pads, bookmarks, book thongs, snacks, stickers, and tattoos are great.  Postcards are good, too, but I'd encourage you to actually leave space on the back for a child (or adult) to use the postcard.  As a kid, I always hated when I got something cool like that, but there was no room for me to write on it.  I will sometime even put stamps on them, and make sure there is plenty of room for a child to write a message to their remote BFF.   Or, put your editor's name and address on the back, and ask the child to tell your editor if they liked the book and why.

There are a number of sites we've talked about previously that are great for perusing and ordering inexpensive items.  I don't think you can beat Vista Print for ordering postcards, business cards, pens, pencils, sticky pads, tons of great items.  I've always enjoyed fabulous customer service which them, which goes a long way with me.  The Oriental Trading Company has just about anything that you could possibly think of, particularly in terms of looking for book tie-ins.  Two other sites that I like are Zazzle and epromo.

We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas about Swagology, and any fave sites that you use.

* * * *
Big congratulations out to Beth Cato who is the winner of last Monday's contest-- Please Help Luther!  :-)  We recieved a number of terrific posts and suggestions.  Thanks so much, everyone!  It was tough to choose.  I had to empanel a very special judge to help.  If  you haven't read the comments from that post, and public speaking can be a challenge for you, do go back and check them out. Beth's suggestions were practice-practice-practice, try to have some fun-- even at your own expense, use sturdy note cards, visit the empty stage or podium in advance if you can, have a cough drop or mint on hand for desert-throat, and make sure you don't wear anything that could choke you, trip you or otherwise present a clothing malfunction.

And, we want to thank Kimberly Lynn for sending us the fun 'nervous speaker' case study.  Beth and Kimberly have won a copy of the soon-to-be-released (March 19!) new novel by the amazing Laurie Halse Anderson entitled Wintergirls.  If you both will email me off-line with your mailing address, I will put the orders in for you.

Have a great week!
Mary Hershey

45. Identity of Secret Indie Bookseller Revealed!

So just who is our Mystery Indie Man? Meet Clark Kepler, President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of KEPLER'S BOOKS in Menlo Park, California.

A resounding high-five out to Amy Rea who cracked the case in record time. Amy has a $25.00 Books Sense gift certificate winging its way to her now. And, hats off to our runners up to TadMack,  Thalia Chaltas and Jennifer Bertman. Man, you guys are good! I thought I might have you stumped for a few days! I can see I'm going to have to pull out my dusty 17-pound manual of Really Brutal Contest Challenges. You've driven me to this.

If "Kepler's" sounds familiar, they should, because they were just awarded the Lucile Micheels Pannell Award for BEST FAMILY BOOKSTORE-- in the nation! Very impressive. And, our mystery man, Clark Kepler, was awarded Bookseller of the Year by Publisher's Weekly in 1994.

After spending some time on their website touring their many events, photos, community projects, charitable donations, author interviews, books clubs, staff picks, I can see why this bookstore gets such stellar marks.  This is a veritable hub of literacy, outreach, and rich tradition.

Here is a photo of authors Shannon Hale and Libba Bray cavorting at a Kepler's sponsored event--

And where else but Kepler's might one buy a Jane Austen Action Figure?? I don't have one of those yet!

It is also available from this BLOG - see on the RIGHT ======>>

Winners of the Honorable Mention awards are presented in random order, and include authors Mindy P. Lawrence, Dorothea Buckingham, Nikki Leigh, Margot Finke, Karina Fabian and Jessica Kennedy.

The contest was sponsored and created by TRI Studio LLC, producer of
The Fiction Flyer, a free e-zine for writers of fiction.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of The Frugal Book Promoter and The Frugal Editor, judged the contest based on the following criteria:1) the originality of the idea, 2) The breadth of applicability, and 3) the ease of use.

Says Johnson, “There were some very interesting ideas which made judging extremely difficult.” According to Kathe Gogolewski, author and President of TRI Studio LLC, the contest was created as a way to showcase new and interesting promotion ideas by authors and for authors. “We wanted to create a tool to help writers in their craft,” she adds.

The e-book, listing The Winners of The 2008 Out of the Box Promotions Contest for Writers is also available for download and distribution HERE .
