3. Reading Clean Spotlight: Incarceron & Sapphique by Catherine Fisher & GIVEAWAY!

I chose Incarceron and Sapphique, for our Reading Clean Spotlight during the next few weeks. These books have such an imaginative, wonderful storyline. They are both very Reading Clean. Sapphique (hardcover) comes out December 28, 2010. On release day I will announce the winner of one ARC copy of Sapphique and Incarceron/Sapphique poster to ONE VERY LUCKY person. HOWEVER, the second place winner will receive two posters... one Incarceron and one Sapphique!!! (sign up below)

This contest is where Parental Book Reviews and Reading Teen come together as one. We at Reading Teen want to give a little extra attention to authors that write their books clean. Very little, or NO cursing, sexual content or violence.
However, we still love the stories (maybe, not as clean) that stay just as true, and romantic novel geniuses that we all know and love... !

4. Interview with MATCHED author Ally Condie and Winner Announced!

Today is the day!!  Happy release day to MATCHED, one of our favorite books of the year, and our featured book in this month's Reading Clean Spotlight!  We are very excited to share this Q & A we did with Ally about her book!

-Describe Matched in five words.

*Star-crossed lovers, secrets, and poetry! (I think star-crossed is one word, right?)

No, I'm sorry, you have to do it again....lol!  :P

-The setting in Matched is such an amazing world!! Was it hard for you to create this world, or did the idea come to you naturally?

*The world was really fun to build, actually. I started with the idea of the Match Banquet and then basically built the world around it, thinking What kind of society would have to exist in order for this scenario (the Banquet) to take place?

I don't think I'd want to live in Cassia's world, but I have to say I would love to go to that Match Banquet!

-My favorite character in Matched was definitely Ky (although Kit and Abigaile liked Xander), did you have a favorite character?

*I'm so glad you liked Ky! I like both Ky and Xander, and I think this is because I gave them both different attributes of my husband. So they feel very equal to me. I guess that's not really a fair answer since I picked both of them. ;)

Yes, they were both VERY likable!!  I really don't know how Cassia could choose between them!

-What has been the greatest moment so far in this journey?

*Oooh, tough question. There have been a lot of really great moments. But the one that stands out to me happened before I even had an agent. I had sent MATCHED to my teenage sister, Hope, to read. She's very honest and an avid reader. When she called me up to tell me how she felt about it, she said, "I have a new favorite book." After I hung up the phone, I cried a little. It meant a lot to me that she enjoyed the book so much and I knew she wouldn't say it if she didn't mean it! And that moment gave me the confidence to start querying.

-Do you have any quirky/strange "must haves" when you're writing? What are they?

*I drink a LOT of water while I'm writing, and I have to wear one of my two special hoodies. They are magical and keep me the perfect temperature (my "office" is in the corner of the basement and it gets cold even in summer).

-What do you wish I had asked you? What's your answer?

*I wish you had asked me if I would like free tickets to the London Olympics in 2012 and I would have said, yes, please! (I'm dying to go--I love the Olympics and I studied abroad in London--but I don't think it's going to happen.) ;)

Hmmm....I think you may have cheated on that question :)  Oh, and don't tell Kit that you studied abroad in London,

5. Review: Matched by Ally Condie (Andye's take)

Matched

It isn't very often that a group of us reads the same book, but when Kit and Abigaile had such good things to say about MATCHED, I just had to pick it up myself.  I am so glad that I did!!  This was one of my favorite reads of the year!

The story starts with Cassia, a complacent girl who does what she's told, when she's told.  She trusts the Society to make all the important (and even the seemingly unimportant) decisions in her life:  Where she will work, what she can read, who she will marry.  When the Society "Matched" her with Xander, she wasn't surprised.  He is perfect for her, her best friend.  But when she looks at her Match again on her own computer, it isn't Xander's face that appears, it's Ky's.

Ky has been in Cassia's life almost as long as Xander, but while Cassia knows everything there is to know about Xander, Ky is a complete mystery.  After seeing his face, she wonders if he's the one she's really meant to be with.  As she spends more and more time with Ky, he starts to help her see the world for what it really is.  She realizes that there is so much more to life than what the Society tells them.
Now she's faced with a choice, and it isn't just a choice between Xander and Ky.  It's a choice between suppression and freedom.

It was amazing to me, that in a world that was so stifled in every way, there could be so much passion! Even before Cassia realized it herself, you could tell that she had a curiosity for life and love that wasn't going to be stopped.  The fire that was waiting inside her, only needed a spark to start blazing, and that spark was Ky.  I think that's why I loved Ky so much, and why, even though Xander was perfect, I would choose Ky every time.  He's the one who pushed Cassia to question things.  He's the one who wouldn't let the Society choose for him.  Xander was a great guy, but he was complacent, happy to go along with the way things were done.  Ky pushed the boundaries.  He held on to his freedom and helped Cassia to find hers.

I loved the romantic tension between Cassia and Ky, as well.  It reminded me a lot of Twilight, in the way that there was SO much desire and passion when they weren't even able to touch.  When love and romance are held at bay, it just builds that much more.  It's amazing to me that the books that are the most moving and the most sigh-worthy, aren't the ones where the main characters are all over each other, they are the ones where the tension is built up to the breaking point.  The ones where you're dying for them to just graze each other's fingers.  Talk about driving a person crazy!!

It wasn't just the romance that I loved, though.  The world that Ally created was so fantast

8. Kit's Review of Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

ParanormalcyBook Description:

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours.

But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.
So much for normal.

My Review:

I've started quite a few books lately that have been very disappointing, and I thought maybe I was just getting picky after reading so many amazing books. I think my mom got sick of listening to me complain about the ones I was reading and she said, "Just go read Paranormalcy right now!" Needless to say, I finished it in less than one day.  Paranormalcy has officially been added to my favorites list (which includes Sea, Hunger  Games, Catching Fire, and Harry Potter :) I ADORED THIS BOOK! It is hilarious,  quirky, and completely unique!  I don't care about your stupid "TBR Pile."  Read Paranormalcy instead. Period. End of story. It is absolutely, utterly, entirely amazing.

9. Reading Clean Spotlight

We at Reading Teen are excited to bring to you a new series we are starting called "Reading Clean Spotlight"!  We love and appreciate all authors, but we want to give a little extra recognition to those authors and books that manage to not only be phenomenal reads, but have also accomplished that difficult task without the use of excessive language and sexual content.   Although there are many out there who don't mind these elements in books, we have heard, overwhelmingly, from those who are looking for great books that are free of those things.

We will be focusing on one book, for a couple of weeks at a time, and will hopefully be able to offer exciting things associated with the book we're spotlighting.  Things like book reviews, author interviews, vlogs (maybe even cooking vlogs featuring food from the book), and of course giveaways!

If there's a clean read that you would like us to spotlight, or if you're an author who would like us to feature your book, email us at ReadingTeen1 at gmail.com.

We hope you enjoy this feature!

Andye, Amy, Kit, Abigaile, & Austin
