26. trying something a bit new...

meet maribel the mermaid:)
i have a bit of "free" time in between christmas gifts and custom orders so i wanted to try something a bit different. i am going to do a series (i hope) of 11x14 gallery wrapped canvases to be sold as ORIGINALS in my etsy shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/enchantedeasel.
i thought it would be cute to kind of do a compilation of sorts on a theme for a child's room. yes, i will be doing boys too;) maybe a cute little astronaut/outer space theme or dinosaurs....
but my first one in this series will be called mermaid life with my sweet little maribel. this will look great in a little girl's room with ocean animals/beach theme. or maybe even in a bathroom. lots of bright, tropical colors are planned for this cutie:)
stay tuned....

28. Low-Sew Halloween Costumes

Folks seem to already be looking for Halloween costume ideas, so I thought I’d round up previous posts on the topic. My favorite handmade costumes are  ones that don’t take too much effort.

Here’s our fireman costume from two thrifted shirts:

Another oldie and goodie—-the Turtle Costume from a sweatshirt and a sweater:

andf lastly, the Princess Dress from Upcycled Fabrics:

gown

For more ideas, go to elsie marley’s post here.

For the best Halloween decorations ever, look to Blair Peter of wisecraft’s posts here and here.  And here.  She does the WAY coolest stuff with things found for pennies at the thrift store.

I’m not sure what we’ll do for Halloween this year. It’s not really done in Germany, so last year we called friends around the neighborhood to warn them we’d be coming and begging for candy. It was fun, but I do miss our neighborhood Halloween back in the U.S.

29. I'm a Tiny Turtle!

Check out this video of "Whispering Wally" called "The Trouble with Treasure." I play Torrie, a tiny sea turtle. Based on characters developed by Kevin S. Collier and Kristen Collier. Isn't Torrie cute? TORRIE THE SEA TURTLE learns many lessons from her guide and mentor Wally the whale in their story time adventures. Torrie represents the curiosity of youth in all of us as well as the drive to

30. Turtlehouse in the Rain

I had a chance at the end of last year to revisit my "Turtlehouse" character in a new illustration. This piece accompanied a Langston Hughes poem in a children's magazine:
Looking at it now, I notice the original is a bit dimmer than I'd like it to be (it's displaying a little higher contrast here than it is in real life). Even though it's a twilight rain scene, I think I should have added some moonlight-esque highlights to the characters to make them pop a little more. But that aside, I'm pretty content with the design and I like the characters.

The original painting is available in my etsy shop. Oh - and also, I had mentioned in a previous post that my "Ducklings on the Move" painting would soon be available - it's now listed at my shop as well.

31. A Proverb

There were so many ideas concerned Proverbs to illustrate, but at the end I came up with this classic italian proverb: "Chi va piano va sano e va lontano", which sounds in english as "slow and steady wins the race"

Check my blog :)

32. David Wiesner's Flotsam for Real

I love David Wiesner's children's books. How cool is it that one of them came true - sort of. A sea turtle found a digital camera in a water proof housing and managed to turn the thing on and record himself. He's not a very good cinematographer, in fact, I imagine he was probably trying to eat the camera. But it's still neat. Even neater was that they actually tracked down the owner of the camera, a man who lost it scuba diving in November 1,000 miles away.

I wonder if frogs will start flying next.

35. Aesop revisited in the western desert

The old tale of  Tortoise and Hare tells that falling asleep while doing a task is bad.

Jack the rabbit read it well, thought to himself, “the light this sheds is sad !”

No member of my global community is so lax, I’ll get that title back !

To that end he checked out the local Tortoise, Goggling on his computer for every fact.

He bought goggles and bomber cap from a site on the internet .

And while he was at it, found some sites and  placed a few side bets.

The odds were good, in the turtles favor.

The money Jack  knew he would soon savor !

Come race day the a crowd came out and the sun did shine.

The Tortoise was ready and Jackrabbit looked quite fine !

The race got started with a flurry and flash.

The rabbit was off  like a shot but Tortoise got hung up in desert trash.

Jack was far out in front and in sight of the finish line .

But Coyote spied the race, thinking Tortoise and Hare would taste just fine.

Coyote joined in the race with turtle the first one he caught just rounding the bend.

Tortoise pulled up shy  in his shell and, though Coyote knocked, would not let him come in.

So off  Coyote sped to catch his other pray but Jack saw him coming  and did not want to be Din Din.

As things often go the race was a bust and no body won.

Jack was diligent and did not sleep, so lived to have another son.

Tortoise, though he was slow, lived long and finally came out.

But Tortoise forgot what the race was about.

So when you hear another famous fable.

Just finish your spinach and clean up the crumbs before you leave the table.

So you may live long like Tortoise and Hare,

Though like Tortoise your mind may not be there.

And fast is good when you are fast as a bunny so you may outrun the danger.

Like Jackrabbit, you may have to change your course when chased by a stranger.

43. Green - sea turtle

I love painting animals, this one is a green sea turtle. When I'm painting realistic animals I try to get the details right so that they look the way they should. Then since I'm a children's illustrator, I tweak their face expressions just a little bit so that they look friendly.

44. Final of Turtle Ride

Here's the final of the "Turtle Ride". I added the background separately, tiling a patch of blue I had colored by hand. I still think it's too flat looking. In a few weeks, I plan to test out Painter to see how it may help. I wish I could do it now, but there's too much going on right now.

47. Writing For Your Turtle Carrying Protagonist Driv...

Writing For Your Turtle Carrying Protagonist

Driving home from work yesterday I noticed a lady standing in the middle of the road. I slowed. At her feet rested a larger snapper.

“Nice turtle.” I said.
“Can you help me get it across the street?”

So I pulled off the road.

photo showing proper way to handle a snapping turtle

As I hopped out of the jeep, I noticed a student from my school who had arrived just prior me. He was reaching down to lift the turtle... by its shell (insert gasp).

“Grab it by its tail. Its tail! I shouted.”

The snapper reached back with fire in its eye and hatred in its belly (Wow, isn’t that the worse thing you have ever read? I should write romance novels!)

I never saw hands retract so quickly as the boy stood at attention.

“Uhm, you want to do it?”

I was glad too. I live for this stuff. I lifted the snapper firmly by the base of the tail and carried it safely across the road (with no gratitude from the ticked-off turtle I might add).

The lesson learned:
Snapping turtles have powerful jaws and long necks that can reach way back. The only safe way to carry a snapper is by the tail.

If you are writing a story and your protagonist has to carry a snapping turtle, make sure your hero carries the turtle by the tail not the shell (or have your hero get bit).
