26. The little things

This past week I've been parked in front of this machine, learning how to fiddle with images for licensing. There's been a lot of erasing-out of backgrounds, flopping, making repeats, making things into a round format, etc. etc. etc., and just as much undoing of all of that and redoing it a different way, trying a different color, saying of bad words when something goes wrong and has to be done over - you get the picture. And after all of that, not a lot that I can show here, since its all still 'in development'.

Meanwhile, its been the little things that have kept me from going mad - little happy visuals that make my day, every day.

Like Phyllo's fang ~

And Charlie's sleepy head ~

And Phyllo's little feets (with nails that could use a trim, hmmm) ~

Every day I try to notice these little things ~ little quiet "happies" I call them. Things that make the inside of me smile.

Not much else to talk about, pretty boring.
So that's all. Back to work.

27. Beets and kitties

An update on this:

© Paula Pertile
11 x 17, colored pencils on paper

This is going crazy slow. I ended up doing a whole bunch of stuff other than this this weekend, which is why its not farther along. But its getting there.
The beets will be purplish black almost in the darkest areas, eventually. I'm digging doing the 'tails' and roots, and plan to put a rectangle behind them like I did in the last piece, with the tomatoes, just to tie the two pieces together. So I have a ways to go on this, but I'm slogging on.

And because we always like to see what the kitties are up to:

Phyllo with his roll of paper towels.

And Saachi just looking sort of not sure about what this box thing in front of my face is going to do, exactly ...
Doesn't he have great whiskers?

That's about it for today. Not too exciting. Hopefully next time I'll have the veggies done.

30. Blog Roundup, featuring Bertie twice

Here’s an actual blog round up, which I haven’t done in a while, but there was a minor flurry of activity last week.

I visited the St. Michael, Minnesota middle school last week and met a bunch of cool kids and a very cool teacher, Jill Foltz, who blogged about it better than I could. As usual I appreciated the kids telling me about what they like to do, and what they like to read. One thing I noticed is that easily half the kids, maybe more, were carrying recreational reads… from my buddy Carrie’s zombie apocalypse novel, to a baseball novel I’ve read, um, once or twice.

But Bertie is more of a star this week, outshining me in this interview by Sharon, and also appearing on the Friskies blog (you have to download the PDF newsletter at that URL to see a picture he took).

31. "Crap" in German is "Mist"

You know when you have a day that, well, let's just say you've had better? That's a crap feeling to walk around with. I was having a bad day a few weeks ago. At the end of it, I had a little 'doodle therapy' on my way home. Hey, it gave me a good chuckle. I guess, in retrospect, it really did make my day better. And now I have some funny souvenirs as a reminder to laugh when I have a bad day.

32. Sharpie Week, Day 4... Kitties In Suburbia

I drew this one Sunday while vending at South End Open Market. As long as you don't get too wrapped up in your drawing, it's ok to draw during a lull at a show. Of course, I tend to get really wrapped up in my drawings. And my doodles (I've always hated that word, by the way) become drawings, once I move into the zone... So I guess the take-home message for myself is that I probably should not doodle while vending.

35. Fun day at SOWA

Fun and (I am happy to report :) ) busy day today at the South End Open Market. I tell you I LOVE this side of town! Lived in Boston or Cambridge for most of my life. Now WHY have I not spent time in this vibrant little shoebox-cozy part of town? Let's look forward shall we! I'm going to drag Matt out of Cambridge for a leisurely South End Saturday one of these weekends. The dog count ALONE here is worth the trip -- so many adorable, sweet, big, tiny, licky-friendly and then also of course the non-chalant, stand-offish doggies, and I love to meet every last one! It's like a big dog party! :)

Weather was nice today -- very warm but not too sticky with intermittent sun and overcast skies. The a.m. was just a little bit harried because we did not have a lot of time to set up our tent and area. It was a race but it all worked out just fine in the end.

The crowds were intermittently thick or moderate at any given moment. We had an aisle spot, so there were a couple of "Now you see them, now you DON'T" types of moments, but in reverse: "Now you don't see them, now you DO!" That was fun and kept us on our toes!

Today, SOWA hosted a group of NYC artisans called "The {New New}". (The {New New} group is similar in philosophy and concept as the group to which I belong, Boston Handmade.) I think that having The {New New} here today may have helped to increase foot traffic over a typical summer Sunday. In general, the overall number of vendors was high as well, so it was a very good day to be here, whether vending or shopping or just hanging out! I was not able to do a good walk through, greet our NYC guests and see what kind of cool stuff they were making and selling. I was too busy today. with my own booth, which is a good thing, I can't complain about that but I sure would like to meet the NYC artists some time. For now, I will have to depend on their Flickr photostream to check out how the day went from their end!

I also did not take too many pics today (see the photos I did take HERE). I just didn't have many chances. I was able to take a few of my table and a few of my booth mate / sister / jewelry designer NancyRosetta's. (Those did not require that I leave the booth. It's no wonder I could get a few pics!)

Well, that's my SOWA report for Sunday, August 9, 2009. I might do one more SOWA date this month ( Aug. 30) . It's not certain yet but I promise to keep you in the loop!

36. Lucky Charms

Oh, you charming kitties!

I recently started making these little hand-painted wood tag-style charm necklaces. (I like to call them "amulets", because it sounds magical!) On one side, the feature little kitties that help you meditate on a certain goal or behavior (which is written out on the other side) . The idea for these grew out my attempts to produce some beautiful, one of a kind, wearable  mini-artworks that not only looked cute but but that also had a more meaningful, and maybe useful, purpose. I love words, quotes, and I love to do lettering too, so making these charming kitty amulets would also be extra engaging for me to make.

Focus

I wasn't even thinking about this when I created the one above, but, strangely, this one seems to echo my wishes for my mom in her stroke recovery. For one thing, she sometimes shuts one of her eyes - like Popeye... and like the kitty here. The second thing is that all the swirlies above the kitty's head could signify the brain injury event of a stroke, and of how a person's brain so cerebrally mixed up after one. And lastly, one of her biggest hurdles she is working through is being able to focus on one task long enough to complete it successfully...  and this is called Focus. Hmmm!

The two above have been adopted (by me)!

40. Illustration Friday: Island

This is another ATC I recently made. I call it "Fiery Kitty on Volcano Island". You can see the volcanoes in the distance along with other 'island landscape' accoutrements... Hope you like! (Click here to see another one of these Marvy marker ATC's which I posted at the Sugar Frosted Goodness blog last week.)

I had another unthinkable episode of DISK FAILURE tonight (YES -- for the second time this summer - can you believe it --what is in the air??). This time, it was not my main hard drive like in July (which was replaced under warranty-YEAH!!), but instead it was my main external that I work off of (I don't usually work off my internal hard drive). I also have a back-up for my that one - my active external (the one that is now not working), but I had not backed it up in a couple of weeks. Luckily (...I guess) I have not been doing digital artwork in the past couple weeks and saving it directly to my external hard drive, but I *did* lose a slew of cropped and organized scans that I saved there. Oh well -- I can rescan, no biggie, and I could have lost a LOT more.

The Pika Package Project is a very unique collaborative effort. It involves around 40 artists a month, one super-energetic woman named Amy (who organizes the project, picks the artists, photographs the goods, assembles the packges, publishes a magazine, and... and... well you get the picture).

But last but not least, it involves YOU, because YOU have the opportunity to WIN one of two August 2008 Pika Packages! What is a Pika Package? Each package consists of a FUN BUNCH bunch of art goods from a combination of the contributing artists - independent artists from all over the world. (Drool drool.) So whaddya waiting for?? Get on over to Pika Land and post a comment to be entered into the two drawings! But before you do, read the big ol' link below first.

I am proud to be a contributing Pika Package artist this month!! :) Please do pop on over there to see what I contributed and also to comment and enter the prize package drawings! It is just that easy, folks.

While you are there, be sure to download the Pika Package August 2008 'Zine, which is beautifully designed, and chock full of interviews of all the contributing artists, including beautiful photos of the fine things they donated to the Pika Package August 2008. 45. Illustration Friday: Stitch

Hey! This kitty is stitchin'. Made this just for IF this week.

The style / size I used for this is the same 'template' I've been using all week on a project I completed. I illustrated many 2" x 1 5/8" greyscale illos for K workbooks. I tell you, sometimes, there is just nothing better for the work itself than being under the gun while doing it. (I'm not kidding...)

Working under the gun forces me to work quicker and therefore take some chances that I normally might not. It forces me to come up with solutions that WORK, and FAST!!! Working out a fairly complex composition quickly (and making sure it is done WELL) is really great exercise. Having deadlines honestly really helps with this. I know that that might sound very Type A of me, but it's the honest truth. (I love deadlines. There. I said it.) A sense of urgency can be a very good thing. This project let me flex all of those creative problem-solving muscles in the framework of a tight deadline. It's refreshing to work in that way sometimes. Just to do something quickly, and work with it. You're present all of the time - no time for daydreaming.
It's also kind of neat as a graphic designer to utilize those creative problem solving skills for design purposes, and then also see how they translate in the illustration part of the brain.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

46. ALSC awards

Don't know what I mean by ALSC (Association for Library Service to Children) awards? Chances are, you're probably more familiar with them than you think... and you've probably read (or watched your kids read) many of these books.

ALSC is a division of ALA (American Library Association) and they confer a number of awards, but the ones I'm referring to here are the Literary and Related Awards. The most famous, of course, are the Caldecott and Newbery. But there's also a number of other wonderful awards (which have been growing through the years.) Check out ALSC's descriptions of the various awards... they explain it much better than I could.

The awards are announced every January (and sales immediately skyrocket- literally within the hour). The winners are talked about on lots of listservs and websites when they're announced, but alas... it's really hard to get a copy of the books when they've suddenly become incredibly popular. It so happens that I've read the winners and honor books of just about every single award honored this past year... see a partial explanation of why (and how) towards the middle of this post.

So, even though it's several months after all the hype, I'm going to be posting reviews of several of the honored books, because, well.... they're excellent books. Also, I got the chance to attend almost all the ALSC award ceremonies this year, hear the speeches and meet the authors... and I'd love to share all the fascinating things I learned. And to get feedback from people who've read the books (now that they're easier to get than they were in January.

I've already reviewed two 2007 Newbery books... the winner- The Higher Power of Lucky and one of the fabulous honor books- Rules. Stay tuned for the other two (Hattie Big Sky and Penny from Heaven), as well as the Caldecott, Geisel, Siebert, Andrew Carnegie and Batchelder 2007 winners and honor books.
