Today, comicbook.com broke the news that WWE veteran Adam Copeland has been cast as Al Rothstein, aka Atom-Smasher in CW’s TV adaptation of The Flash.  The second season, which premieres this fall, will feature the super-strong size-changing character as a villain, even though he has primarily been portrayed as a hero in the comics.

Today, Warner Bros and The CW confirmed some news about the upcoming second season of The Flash.  First off, they’ve announced that Zoom will be the premiere villain of the arc.

Shantel VanSanten has been cast as Patty Spivot, a “police officer and science enthusiast who catches the eye of Barry Allen.”

Finally, Teddy Sears has been cast as Jay Garrick, the first hero to call himself The Flash.  His official character description says he’s “a mysterious figure who arrives in Central City to warn Barry Allen and his team at S.T.A.R. Labs of an impending danger that he alone cannot hope to stop.”

Today, we got our first look at the trailer for Vixen, an animated series that will share a chronology and characters with the live action The Flash and Arrow series currently airing on the CW.  Megalyn Echikunwoke will voice the titular character while The Flash’s and Green Arrow’s actors crossover from the realm of physical acting to give voice to their animated counterparts.

Today I sat in the press room for The Flash, which included stars Grant Gustin, Tom Cavanagh (who will be returning next season), Candace Patton, Carlos Valdes, Jesse L. Martin, John Wesley Shipp and show producer Andrew Kreisberg. Typically, it’s a bit challenging to get too many details out of the cast and crew for any television series in this kind of environment. But just ahead of their big panel tonight in Hall H, I was able to squeeze a few hints from Gustin about what can be expected in the highly anticipated second season of the series.

The first question that came up related to where Barry finds himself given the cliffhanger we were left with at the end of Season 1:

When we’re coming back, we’re going to see how the singularity affected everybody and kind of piece together exactly what happened. It’s not a completely direct pick-up and the Flash is getting a lot of acclaim from the city for being a hero at this point. And Barry is having a hard time dealing with that, just because, as we all know, Eddie stopped Wells. He was the hero that day and Barry knows that and is kind of having a hard time dealing with the attention. He’s kind of shunned everyone he works with because he doesn’t want anyone else to have to die. He’s kind of going about things a different way when we find him at the beginning of Season 2.

In a follow-up, Gustin addressed this topic further:

I think the biggest thing, as Season 1 was winding down, he was getting a lot of confidence. He knew what he was doing, he had that team behind him, and they all felt like they could take down these metahumans and do something good. But that’s all kind of been turned on its head for season 2. Barry’s going to be spending a lot of time this season maturing, trying to find confidence again, he’s working with a new mentor that’s going to help him hone some new powers pretty early on. He discovers a new power in the second episode that I’m pretty excited about.

This mentor detail made my ears perk up, so I pressed further and asked if that may tie into Geoff Johns‘ revelation about Jay Garrick appearing on the series:

Could be.

And finally on that same topic, Gustin danced around it a bit when asked what he’s excited for fans to see next season:

I don’t know too much about what else is to come. I know some vague things, other than the first two episodes that I read. Things that have kind of been vaguely mentioned with mentors and iconic characters and what not (looks directly at me) that were teased in the season finale even. I think that’s the biggest thing I’m excited about that I think fans will be excited about as well.

Many in the Press Corps at SDCC also noticed that the Flash costume that’s on display on the show floor (at DC’s Booth) has a white emblem instead of the red emblem that we’ve seen so far. We had to find out more:

That’s a thing, yeah, I shot in the suit on my first or second day of filming in the red emblem. But, yeah, I will be in that suit pretty soon.

And what about future cross-overs with Arrow and the upcoming spin-off DC’s Legends of Tomorrow?:

There’s some crossovers already planned….throughout the year and probably at the end of the year. I think it’s going to start to become kind of a staple, I think it was Episode 8 that The Flash and Arrow crossed-over, I think that’s going to be the time every year, provided we still have tv shows.

And finally, in terms of fun questions, I hearkened to the idea that perhaps The Flash should produce a musical episode, given the singing chops of so many of its castmates and if he’s pursued that idea with the producers:

No (laughing), I have not. Although I am pushing fun in general on the show, and maybe even the karaoke bar we went to becoming a frequent place we can go, bring Cisco, and just have it be a set to hang out on and squeeze in karaoke moments here and there. I think a musical episode is like a season 10 kind of thing, if we make it.

Very exciting details all around, particularly the idea that perhaps Jay Garrick might be introduced as early as one of the first 2 episodes. Based on something I heard from Andrew Kreisberg, it’s probably the second episode, as he stated there would be a huge fight scene in that episode that fans have waited for. “Flash of Two Worlds” anyone?

The second season of The Flash premieres on October 6th.

Here we go, it’s the final week! Let’s cut straight to the chase and talk DC’s Week 4 of their “DC You” initiative.

After last week, I’m feeling pretty good, and ready to read! What do they have in store for me?

Side-note: my LCS didn’t get Teen Titans this week, so it is omitted from this list. I didn’t want to buy it anyway, to be honest.

Aquaman #41: My second shot with a Cullen Bunn book after Lobo landed with a thud. The last time I tried this Aquaman title was when Jeff Parker was on board, and I had trouble getting into even then, and I often enjoy Parker’s writing. Conceptually, Bunn is doing something interesting: the usage of a flashback-dual narrative structure isn’t new but it remains somewhat enticing, though the idea of it probably grabbed me more than the story itself. I don’t think Bunn is a particularly gifted dialogue writer, and I still generally find Aquaman mostly a bore, but if it keeps up this format, I’ll be down for another issue maybe….maybe. I’m at least curious to see if both threads pick up steam, provided that they continue to exist and it wasn’t just a first issue thing (I’ve read no interviews to know either way). There’s a bit of this new Aquaman tonally that also somewhat reminds of Kurt Busiek‘s far too short-lived Conan inspired run. I like that, on the other hand Trevor McCarthy‘s art was rather messy, and somewhat unclear, reminding me a bit of his rushed Batwoman arc where he took over for Amy Reeder.

Verdict: On the fence

Batgirl #41: I legitimately think Batgirl gets better every single issue, which for a mainstream superhero comic, is a pretty rare feat. This installment was another winner and provided one of the best looks at the new Batman status quo, while still relaying a “big” story through the lens of what Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher, and Babs Tarr have laid down from the beginning of their run. Also of note, this is the first issue that Stewart did not provide layouts for Tarr, so what we get here, and in subsequent issues to come, is all Tarr. There’s one moment of male gaze that’s probably going to catch some ire, and it’s a weird miscalculation. But outside of that one panel, I’m a big big big fan.

Verdict: Already on my pull and staying there 

Deathstroke #7: Yikes, what a disaster this book is. Sub-Image 90’s garbage. To add insult to injury, Hephaestus is completely out of character from how he was presented in the Brian Azzarello/Cliff Chiang Wonder Woman run, one of the best New 52 launch titles. This book is representative of the kind of stuff that people accused the New 52 of being: obsessed with EXTREME storytelling. Tony Daniel is a gifted artist, and at times (“Batman R.I.P.”) produces really nice looking work, but as a writer…well, at least he’s relegated to a book I don’t care about at all, and have no reason to at this point.

The Flash #41: Good lord, the exposition! It had been a minute since I’d read a Robert Venditti–Van Jensen co-written comic, but wow, was this an awkward read! I’m not sure if previous issues of their run tried as hard to tie into The Flash television series, but they’re really bending over backwards here to shoe-horn in not only the “father wrongly imprisoned” subplot, but also a Joe West stand-in. Brett Booth, who I am decidedly not a fan of, doesn’t help much, but the painfully overwritten narration and dialogue isn’t his fault. Perhaps for those who have been reading this run regularly, this issue pays off better, but I found myself rolling my eyes more often than not.

Gotham By Midnight #6: A decent read, and I think Juan Ferreya makes for a slightly clearer if somewhat duller artist for this “supernatural side of Gotham” series than Ben Templesmith. Ray Fawkes, whose creator-owned work I generally enjoy, really hasn’t quite grabbed me during his DC tenure and this issue doesn’t do much to change that. This is basically a book I like more in theory than in actual execution, having tried a couple of different issues at this point. I want to like a Jim Corrigan/Spectre series so badly, but I’m just not sure this is ever going to be a book that scratches that itch for me. I sure liked the ghostly imagery though!

Grayson #9: Remember how much I liked Batgirl this week? I think I liked Grayson even more. I know I go on and on about it, but the Tom King scripted issues of this series are absolutely some of the best adventure comics DC has released in years. From the hilarious opening bit that takes a different angle on the first issue’s train sequence, to the introduction of a new cabal of spies that has pretty big ramifications to DC’s larger espionage picture, to more tongue in cheek moments between Dick and Agent 1, this is basically the DC comic that I never knew I needed in my life. Now that I have it, I never want to let it go. I’m also glad to see Mikel Janin on a book better suited to his talents, as King gives him some wonderfully cinematic moments here. That two-page spread of the necklace heist was my favorite action beat of the week.

Verdict: Already on my pull-list and staying there

Green Lantern: Lost Army #1: Now here was a surprise! I really don’t care about Green Lantern much at all, and I generally checked out of the character about a year into Geoff Johns‘ New 52 run. I’ve dabbled here and there since, but I’ve never felt much of an urge to return. Even this month’s opening chapter to the “Renegade” storyline only somewhat intrigued me enough to probably pick up next month’s offering. Here, Cullen Bunn does the flashback thing again, but it works a good deal better this time, playing with the story tropes of LOST (which in turn was riffing on Watchmen). These “stranded in an unknown galaxy” stories can either go really well (Legion Lost) or really badly (Star Trek: Voyager), but Bunn has produced a solid enough cast to start out with, that I think this is a title with stronger promise than anything else he’s working on right now. It’s nice to be excited about a Green Lantern book again, and if they can capture the wonder and unknowns of space exploration, this’ll be one to keep an eye on. I already somewhat think that’s the case already.

Verdict: Going onto the pull-list

Justice League 3001 #1: Totally impenetrable, good Howard Porter art though. I really don’t have much to add here, as I find this book about as shrug-worthy as I did when I picked up the first three issues of Justice League 3000. I just don’t think it’s a strong enough title for me to tough out its learning curve, and this new Justice League simply doesn’t engage me at all.

Superman #41: Good, though maybe a little stiff, as I’m finding many of the recent better DC runs’ first issues have been. I’m fascinated by how this story gets to where Superman is in Action Comics, and I think Gene Luen Yang is going somewhere cool with the character. I especially like just how human Clark is when faced with a threat that his powers can’t do anything about. You can’t solve everything with your fists, and that sort of existential crisis is just the kind of tale that can get me re-engaged with Superman again. For the first time in a long time, DC has two worthwhile Superman titles, I’m very glad to see it.

Verdict: Going to the pull-list

We Are…Robin #1: Badly conceived teenage dialogue masks what could have been a pretty enjoyable read. I like the fact that Duke Thomas is the star of the book, but I found everything that came out of the character’s mouth to be cringe-worthy. I bet if you took the dialogue balloons away, you’d have a pretty enjoyable tale of teenage rebellion in the face of a city-wide catastrophe. It’s amazing how badly one aspect of a story can drag the whole thing down, but there it is. How funny is it that 58 year old Paul Levitz can better capture that youthful voice than not-even-40 Lee Bermejo was able to?

So that’s it! I’m done! What did I think of the DC You launch month on the whole? The Batman line is stronger than ever, with a number of great titles under its belt, Superman is off to a cracking start, both Justice League books are pretty enjoyable and DC’s has a number of titles on the fringe that are must-reads. I’d say on the whole, DC’s commitment to creator vision this time around has led them to a much more successful launch than the New 52. Will sales show it? Who knows, but I sure had a great time reading these books (for the most part) and I’m so glad that I’m finally re-energized about DC Comics again.

The Essential New Titles: Black Canary, Constantine: The Hellblazer, Doctor Fate, Green Lantern: Lost Army, JLA, Midnighter, The Omega Men, Prez, and Starfire.

And, of course if you’re not already reading Batgirl, Grayson, or Gotham Academy, you’re really missing out.

Warner Bros. television has just announced its full line-up for this year’s San Diego Comic Con, and it’s looking quite packed. With the Supergirl pilot premiering on Wednesday, July 8th during the vaunted “Preview Night” along with a screening of Lucifer‘s pilot, as well as the pilots for Containment, Blindspot, and a new episode of Teen Titans Go!, their programming is opening up in a cracking fashion.

All of that excitement will then be followed by panel programming over the next few days that will surely be attention grabbing, particularly the Saturday night 8 pm slot in Hall H that sees what they refer to as “Superhero Saturday Night” which, among other features, will includes Q&A’s with the stars of Gotham, The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

I haven’t had a chance to watch the finale of The Flash yet (business travel is the worst sometimes), but I hear it was pretty fun! The CW has already released a very, VERY brief teaser for the next season with showrunners Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti about what fans can look forward to this fall when the series returns:

There’s really not much to see here as of yet, but let’s take the opportunity to chat about last night’s finale, what’d you think? Did The Flash‘s inaugural season live up to your expectations?

We’ll consider any that comments below are free to be rife with spoilers, so anyone who’s in my boat and hasn’t watched it yet, steer clear!

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, after having a number of smash hits like The Lego Movie and the 21 Jump Street franchise under their belts, have become among the most desired screenwriters in Hollywood. Currently, they’re working on both a Spider-Man animated feature for Sony and Warner Bros’ big screen version of The Flash, starring Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being A Wallflower).

Given that there’s already a pretty popular television series starring Grant Gustin on The CW as the Barry Allen version of The Flash, there’s been some question as to which iteration Miller might play, even though the movies will not be connected to the television series as part of any shared universe.

Lord was recently a guest on the Hippojuice podcast (via /Film) where he gave an update on the film:

We’re trying to break a story. It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright. … I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen. … It’s going to be its own [thing, apart from the TV show] — we’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… it really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff.

This basically confirms that we’ll have both a television and film version of the same character. Honestly though, I don’t see this as a terribly big deal. On average about 3-4 million viewers watch The Flash, and I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt that any confusion for that relatively modest audience (in comparison to the audience that will reach a feature film) will be limited.

More importantly, in a somewhat chaotic DC film slate that reportedly has five screenwriters assigned to Wonder Woman and at least three on Aquaman, the fact that The Flash‘s script situation is being approached in a much more stable manner is reassuring.

But only time will tell. The Flash is expected to see release in 2018.

After his continued success on a certain CW show, Cisco Ramone’s comics counterpart Paco Ramone (also known as Vibe) began to grow jealous of Cisco’s role on The Flash. The CW character has been able to take on some of the best material of the show serving as both the comedic relief and mad scientist. Wanting a piece of the action, Paco decided to hatch a plot for revenge via some of his best friends — the men and woman of the Beat Manor. First, we made Paco give us his staff picks, so we could deliver this fantastical article to the comics public, then we listened as Paco hatched one of the most sinister plans that several of the Beat Staff have ever heard. He decided to put a whoopee cushion on every single surface of S.T.A.R. Labs, and then replace Cisco with Paco for the day. He convinced several Beat Staffers to join him in his nonsensical farce. Unfortunately, The Reverse-Flash caught Paco (most of the Beat Staffers got out alive) and he was never heard from again. Disregard that story as you read about our top comics picks of the week.

Injection #1

INJECTION explores how loud and strange the world is becoming, and the sense that it’s all bubbling into chaos—a chaos poised to become the Next New Normal—and that we did this to ourselves without thinking for a second about how we were ever going to live inside it.

Relatively little has been announced regarding Injection’s plot. Which doesn’t matter, as the creative team of Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey have already cemented their names in the comics public as a great team. Shalvey has spent a lot of time getting the art up to the standards of Moon Knight, and spoken publicly about wanting experiment further in his main psychedelic style. This is going to be a red hot title this week even with the amount of crossovers shipping from Marvel and DC.

The Mantle #1

Writer: Ed Brisson Artist: Brian Level Publisher: Image

THE MANTLE follows Robbie—just your average, run-of-the-mill guy—as he drunkenly stumbles out of a punk show one evening. On his way home he’s hit with lightning and wakes to find that he’s been chosen as the new host for The Mantle, a power set of unimaginable scope. Despite his lack of interest, he’s forced into action. The Plague, a being who has spent 50 years killing every previous host of The Mantle, is already coming for him.

Sheltered author Ed Brisson is jumping on The Mantle, a comic with the intention of deconstructing superheroes. The title features the art of Brian Level, who previously worked on a title called In the Dark from IDW and assisted with art for Lazarus from Image is joining Brisson for the series. Watching the military-rooted writer jump onto a title with Punk Rock themes and superhero aesthetics is something that has captured my interest.

The Southern Cross begins to give up its secrets, and Braith finds that the more she learns about her sister’s death, the less she actually knows her.

In a report that hit last night via The Wrap, it looks as though the much in demand team behind The Lego Movie and the 21 Jump Street film franchise may have finally landed on a new tent-pole project.

According to their sources, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are one of the hottest tickets in Hollywood right now, have signed on to write a treatment for Warner Bros’ The Flash. While they haven’t agreed to direct yet, their current task is to “flesh out the story” before making any further commitment.

Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) is currently set to star as the title character, though whether this will be another iteration of Barry Allen (as seen on the CW series The Flash) or perhaps Wally West is unknown at this time. Miller is expected to make his debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Lord and Miller, were they to sign on to direct the film, would join a line-up of filmmakers that includes Zack Snyder (who will direct Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and both Justice League films), David Ayer (Suicide Squad) and Michelle MacLaren (Wonder Woman). Additionally, rumored names like James Wan (for Shazam), Jeff Nichols, and Noam Murro (both have been connected to Aquaman) continue to make the rounds.

Lord and Miller are represented by UTA.

The Flash is expected to be released in 2018.

Update: And now Warner Bros is looking at James Wan for Aquaman.

Presented without too much ado, here’s the recent sizzle reel that The Flash production team showcased at WonderCon over the weekend. There’s some new footage of note added onto some of the stuff you’ve seen already, namely Emily Kinney as the Bug-Eyed Bandit, the return of The Mist, Weather Wizard and Rainbow Raider, and a few more glimpses at the upcoming second Arrow-Flash cross-over event.

In addition to that, here’s the first trailer for the Bruce Timm produced/Alan Burnett written Justice League: Gods and Monsters, which we detailed a bit over the weekend. I’ve so missed this animation style in DC’s recent features, which have veered more towards a sort of a grittier anime-like look over past number of years. This feels like it could be a welcome return home.

It’s new comic book day, the best day of the week! Before I rush off to my LCS, let’s round-up the few relevant entertainment headlines that are out and about:

– Last night’s episode of The Flash was pretty excellent, with easily the best final 10 minutes that I’ve seen in a superhero television adaptation. Some of the key players of the latest installment spoke with the press yesterday about the ramifications of Barry’s actions and what’s to come:

What happens when you interrupt the space/time continuum on The Flash?

ANDREW KREISBERG: Like Wells has said in a previous episode, there are different versions of time travel. There’s the fixed loop, and then there’s the version where time is more plastic and mutable. One of the fun things is discovering what’s a fixed point in time, what can’t be changed and what things always have to happen, and then what things are changeable and are mutable. It’s a mixture of both. Obviously, none of us knows how time travel really works, but we’ve come up with our rules and we try to stick by them. Not to pat ourselves on the back, but a lot of what we’re doing now is stuff we set up in the pilot. You can go back and watch the pilot and go, “Oh, I get it! That’s why that stream of things is happening!

Will Barry still have to stop Mark Mardon (Liam McIntyre) again?

KREISBERG: The ramifications of this episode are the fun of Episode 16, and seeing how much of what happened in Episode 15 still happens and how much of it might possibly change.

Cisco is a very smart guy. Will he still be suspicious of Dr. Wells, even though they’ve gone back in time?

KREISBERG: Part of the fun of Episode 16 is watching that when time changes, certain events will occur that prevent Cisco from following along the same trajectory. You’ll see how things play out, but in a completely different way.

Now we know that Harrison really is Eobard Thawne. How will that tie into Eddie Thawne, and what will their connection be?

KREISBERG: You can take him at his word that there obviously is a family connection between the two of them. There are some great scenes coming up, between Tom and Rick [Cosnett], that starts to become a storyline. It’s cool stuff. We’re not trying to purposely trick the comic book fans. Being one myself, you can get upset when it’s not quite the way it was in the book. But, the show has to live on its own and it has to be for everybody. It can’t just be an adaptation of comic books that people have already read and know so well. Obviously, we’ve thought of this, from the very beginning, and it’s been leading up to this.

And then there’s the kicker:

Is there a parallel universe now, where there is no Flash?

KREISBERG: Is there?

TOM CAVANAGH: Is there? Answer a question with a question.

I’m still predicting that the season ends with Barry saving his mom and the time ramifications of that taking shape in some way to set up Season 2 (someone else is The Flash perhaps? Wally? Jay?). – Latino Review has a new report this morning with the rumored front-runner to direct Star Wars Episode IX, J.J. Abrams. The Star Wars: The Force Awakens director would make some level of sense given that Episode VIII director Rian Johnson is reportedly scripting Episode IX, and were Abrams to helm it, it would be a sort of “synthesis” of their two visions for the franchise.

– Here’s the first SPECTRE poster, looking as non-descript as possible, but if any of you are like my significant other, any picture of Daniel Craig is a good picture:

It’s still untitled, but the presumed “Brave and the Bold” style team-up series that is spinning out of Arrow and The Flash continues to add to its core cast.

Announced today via Deadline, Dominic Purcell, who played Heatwave on The Flash, will once again be donning Mick Rory’s goggles in the new series.

According to Entertainment Weekly, he’ll be re-teaming with his former Prison Break co-star Wentworth Miller, who plays Leonard Snart/Captain Cold.

In addition to Purcell and Miller, the spin-off will also feature Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom), Victor Garber (Firestorm/Martin Stein), and Caity Lotz (Sara Lance/the first Black Canary). There’s still no word as to whether Robbie Amell, who plays Ronnie Raymond, will be joining Garber as the other half of Firestorm.

The CW’s third series in their DC-based superhero universe is expected to debut mid-season next year, as it has not been included in the upcoming pilot season.

As a part of this past weekend’s PaleyFest presentation, The CW unveiled a new sizzle reel for the remaining episodes of The Flash‘s debut season.

It looks like we have quite a bit to look forward to including The Atom and Black Canary stopping by, the reemergence of General Eiling, GORILLA GRODD!!!, and a dark turn for Eddie Thawne.

The Flash returns tomorrow night to the CW and is followed by the premiere of iZombie.

It was a slow news weekend on the entertainment front these past few days, but here are the the headlines that grabbed my attention in the past 48 hours:

– Both of the casts and creative teams for The Flash and Arrow were on hand at PaleyFest over the weekend. Nothing really earth shattering was announced, but there were a few teases that might excite fans, particularly for The Flash. According to TVLine, Greg Berlanti has hopes that they’ll tackle Wally West or Bart Allen, though no sooner than Season 2. They also hinted that the series will be adapting a major Flash comics storyline soon. Flashpoint, Crisis on Infinite Earths, or a meld of the two seem the obvious answers there, but who knows?

– James O’Barr‘s The Crow is getting another shot at the big screen, directed by Corin Hardy, and according to O’Barr, the film has already found its lead (per Dread Central):

O’Barr said that “Jack Huston has definitely been cast,” that he was “really happy with that choice,” and that the film “will shoot in a couple of months.” He also said the film will essentially be a straight adaptation of his original graphic novel, which differs quite a bit from the (still awesome) 1994 Brandon Lee vehicle.

Jack Huston is a fan favorite from Boardwalk Empire, so this makes for a fairly compelling choice. Whether or not the world needs another Crow film…I’ll leave that up to your discretion.

- The folks over at Latino Review have really been nailing the Suicide Squad news over the past week, dropping some choice tidbits about Jared Leto‘s Joker before the weekend hit. Now they have a few details regarding Batman’s appearance in the David Ayer directed ensemble picture:

According to sources, in the film Batman is some sort of big boogeyman that the government REALLY hates. Get this, prior to the events in #BatmanvSuperman, THE JOKER is the only one to really ever meet him or know him and that’s why he’s so important to Amanda Waller. They have footage of Batman in action which they watch. There is a bit of dialogue where they say Batman is the key to tracking down all “the supers.” Very cool stuff.

- I never find myself terribly excited about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a number of reasons that have been covered by enough people, but it was pointed out to me this morning by Hannah that in the most recently released episode synopsis, Lucy Lawless‘ Isabelle Hartley is coming back:

“One Door Closes” – War comes to Coulson’s doorstep in a way he never anticipated as shocking revelations are brought to light, and Skye struggles to control her new abilities but will soon make a decision that irrevocably changes her life, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Tuesday, March 31 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET) on the ABC Television Network.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Director Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Agent Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Nick Blood as Lance Hunter and Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse.

Guest starring are Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie, Lucy Lawless as Isabelle Hartley, Edward James Olmos as Robert Gonzales, Jamie Harris as Gordon, Christine Adams as Agent Weaver, Kirk Acevedo as Agent Calderon, Cornelius Smith, Jr. as Case, Sai Rao as Susanna, Mackenzie Astin as Tim Maguire and Rick Otto as lead Hydra agent.

So, in other words, the pattern of no one ever actually staying dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues, then again, I guess that’s pretty true to the comics.

Today’s trailers are all about the villains.

First up – a new trailer for Darevil, which is available (all at once, for your binge-watching pleasure) April 11 on Netflix. This trailer focuses heavily on the dynamic between Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) and Daredevil (Charlie Cox). The vibe is definitely a gritty one, focused on cleaning up the streets rather than saving the world.

Next up is The Flash, which has been on a short break and returns March 17. Mark Hamill, who originally portrayed The Trickster in the original Flash series on CBS, reprises the role in the upcoming episodes.  An aged Trickster played by Hamill feels like a nice bit of meta continuity.

Are you looking forward to either of these? Personally I feel D’Onofrio and Hamill are great draws for both.

It looks as though The CW is going to have its own Avengers after all, or at least a live-action Brave and the Bold style team-up show…

Deadline has reported tonight that the network is developing a multi-superhero series featuring some of the characters that have debuted in Arrow and The Flash, including The Atom (Brandon Routh), Firestorm (Victor Garber and Robbie Amell), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Black Canary (Caity Lotz). The latter is particularly odd, as Lotz’s version of the character died this season on Arrow.

There must be a Lazarus Pit somewhere, or her stories are set in the past perhaps?

Also, the report states three new DC characters that haven’t appeared yet in either existing series will debut in the new team-up show. Given that Vixen is appearing in a new animated series on CW Seed, it’d be a safe bet to assume that she might be one those referenced.

Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, Marc Guggenheim and Sarah Schechter will reportedly executive produce this new project, which may skip the pilot stage altogether and head straight to a series order.

With warm wishes for our friends getting snowed upon in the Northeast, here’s a few items that have crossed the newswires this Monday morning:

– The Flash is, on balance, probably my most looked-forward to superhero series each week (give or take Agent Carter), but nothing about that show excites me more than the upcoming appearance of Gorilla Grodd. He’s an evil, psychic, talking gorilla for pete’s sake! We don’t know much about who is voicing him or how CW’s generally meager budget will be able to manage the villain, but yesterday Andrew Kreisberg tweeted out the following:

Grodd is expected to appear this season. The high pierced squealing sound you hear upon his debut is probably me. Don’t mind it too much, okay?

– Gotham continues to build up Batman’s rogues gallery and their latest acquisition is veteran actor Colm Feore, who will be playing The Dollmaker. You’ll probably best recognize Feore as Laufey from Thor (a movie that continues to grow in my estimation over the years). Gotham‘s version of The Dollmaker has ties to Catwoman as he’s behind the kidnapping of Gotham’s street children. A nicely surprising casting coup for the series.

– MovieCastingCall.org has posted info regarding the upcoming shoot for Captain America: Civil War, which is filming not far from my home here in Atlanta. According to the write-up, Daniel Bruhl, who recently joined the cast of the upcoming Marvel film will be playing Baron Zemo. Additionally, here is their description of the plot:

In Captain America: Civil War, billionaire Tony Stark is pitted against Captain America aka Steve Rogers in an ethical face-off over the U.S. government’s Superhuman Registration Act, which requires all superpowered individuals register their powers and report to S.H.I.E.L.D.

I’d take this with a grain of salt right now, Baron Zemo is certainly the go-to guess regarding Bruhl’s role, but the site in question has been known to post potentially dubious info on occasion.

On that same subject matter, Robert Downey Jr. recently spoke with Empire regarding the third Captain America film and his upcoming appearance (via Collider):

They said to me, ‘If we have you, we can do this, or Cap 3 has to be something else.’ It’s nice to feel needed. And at this point it’s about helping each other, too. I look at it as a competition and I go, ‘Wow, maybe if these two franchises teamed up and I can take even a lesser position, with people I like and directors I respect, maybe we can keep things bumping along.’

And he also described some of the character evolution in Tony that will lead to this antagonism between he and Steve Rogers:

It’s natural to change your views…The main thing to me is, what sort of incident could occur, and what sort of framework could we find Tony in? The clues about where we might find him next are in Ultron. But what would it take for Tony to completely turn around everything he’s stood for? Joss brings this up all the time. It’s kind of weird that these guys would have all these throw downs all over planet Earth and yet when the movie’s over, nobody minds. What would the American government do if this were real? Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Tony doing something you wouldn’t imagine?

Looks like he’ll be running…and FAST.

Seriously, this is a fine trailer. And I don’t even like the Flash. And the Arrow crossover possibilities are endless.

Grant Gustin will be playing the title character, Barry Allen, and he’s evidently a jolly sort who likes his powers.

The Flash previously appeared in a one season TV show that ran in 1990 starring John Wesley Shipp. No one really talks about this show any more, but it ran in the “Dark Ages” too soon for the internet, too late for nostalgia.

Wow what a week for DC’s tv properties! iZombie, The Flash and Constantine have ALL been picked up for series commitments! The Flash, which is a spinoff of Arrow, will air on The CW, as will iZombie, based on the Chris Roberson/Mike Allred Vertigo book of the same name. And NBC has ordered Constantine, based on the famed Vertigo comics. Score another one for The Original Writer!

iZombie will be helmed by Veronica Mars Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero. Arrow’s Greg Berlanti is running The Flash as well while Geoff JOhns wrote the pilot, which I’m sure made him very very happy. David Goyer is running Constantine, which stars Matt Ryan as the rumpled demon fighter.

NBC’s also passed along the first still from Constantine which features Ryan and Lucy Griffiths, and doesn’t look stilted or posed at all. Also: trenchcoat rumbledness is wayyyyyy too low. Work on that, Smithers.

Harold Perrineau and Charles Halford are also in the cast.

This is a pretty stunning sweep for Warner’s TV unit, and reinforces why investing in the Vertigo imprint is still a good idea from a development viewpoint. It’s also a nice riposte to Marvel’s dominance in the movie sphere.

This week, everything isn’t coming up MIlhouse, but it is coming up Warner Bros./DC TV.

Setting up the TV pilot for a Flash TV series, The CW appear to have cast actor Grant Gustin – best known for his roles on Broadway and on Glee – as Barry Allen. The character will appear in three episodes of the second season of Arrow, before heading off to a pilot for a show of his own.

The three-episode arc of Arrow, during which hopefully Diggle will raise an intrigued eyebrow at the thought of a super-speed character showing up, will be written by showrunners Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, along with producer/writer Geoff Johns. Say, that name sounds familar…

Gustin, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, understandably commented:

I’m unbelievably excited. I’ve been a lifelong fan of DC Comics, so I can’t be more honored and can’t wait to get started.

And on his Twitter yesterday, he left the following message:

DC’s December solicitations have revealed a number of new creators coming onto new titles and moving around, including the news that writer Jeff Parker will be riding in on a rogue wave and taking over Aquaman from Geoff Johns; whilst Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato have wrapped their run on The Flash and will be moving to a new DC property in 2014.

Here come the bullet-points:

• The first news is Jeff Parker’s decision to pop on a pair of trunks and take over on Aquaman, starting with issue #15. While Geoff Johns focuses on Forever Evil, it seems he’ll be cutting back on his other titles in 2014. The first issue of Parker’s run will see Paul Pelletier and Sean Parsons on art.

• Justice League 3000 has a resolicitation following Kevin Maguire’s departure.

• The creative team for The Flash have completed their run on the series, meaning December will see Christos Gage and Neil Googe coming on for a one-off issue. Manapul and Buccellato seem set to be announcing a new run with DC on a different title next year.

• Supergirl will feature a new creative team, as Tony Bedard writes and Yildiray Cinar and Ray McCarthy handle art. This looks to be the title where the new Lobo will make his first appearance.
• Similarly, Superboy has the new creative team of writers Frank Hannah and Marv Wolfman, along with artist Andres Guinaldo
• Chad Hardin is announced as the regular artist for Harley Quinn.

• Dead Boy Detectives, Vertigo’s latest Sandman spinoff series, has been pushed back to December, with Mark Buckingham now credited as co-writer for the book.
• It’s suggested that Injustice, writer Tom Taylor’s unfairly-panned alt-universe series, may well be ending with issue #12, collecting the digital series up to chapter 36.
