“Silly, cartoony, just plain funny-fun illustrations fit flawlessly with this story about being kind to your neighbors. It’s presented in a woodland setting where our main character, a rabbit has a new family of beavers move in. He accepts the mantra of “do onto otters as you would have done to you”… and winds up taking us on a journey of exactly how he’d like to be treated and we see the rabbit/beaver dynamic in full swing. Lots of fun! My favorite line happens in the front matter before the story has even begun… Rabbit hops around with a hearty “DOO-DEE-DOO!” Kids will no doubt be hopping around doing the same!”

Oh, Laurie Keller is one of my favorites! She’s a hoot and a half! I saw a reviewer call her a “goofball and a genius” once. I couldn’t have put it better myself.

My favorite page of this book is when the rabbit is contemplating having otters move to the neighborhood. Otters? Otters? My new neighbors are OTTERS!

ohhhh hahahaha! Good times. If you like this book you should really be the proud owner of Arnie the Doughnut too. It’s a classic tale of adoption and family…sort of.

Hi Mark and Andrea, thanks SO much for the fun post about my book! I actually saw “Dr. Dave” recently at a library night. He is the same, sweet person I remember, and he told me he remembers me drawing on my patches! Only those patches were these icky band-aid-like patches that got all sweaty–so in the trash they went at the end of the day. They were more simple doodles–since I got the chance to relive it in my book, I made them a bit more elaborate.

Anyway, thanks so much. I really appreciate you sharing my story on your podcast, and inspiring us all with your ongoing reviews and interviews!

I’m so glad to hear about this book on JOMB! Illustration Friday did a fabulous interview with Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw a few weeks ago and my interest was piqued. I got my copy in the mail the same day JOMB did the review. So exciting! I love this book. I recommended it today to a parent of a child with a travelin’ eye. She was thrilled!

This is a great book! Sarah Ackerley is very talented as an artist and author. We had Sarah show her illustrations and read to kids at our gallery. The kids loved it! This was a few months ago and I still have parents telling me how much their kids love Patrick! Thank you Sarah for inspiring these kids…and Patrick, too! I’ll keep my eyes open for the new book…

I love you Stinky face is my favorite book to read to my son and has beenf or the past 2 years. He reaches for it every time I ask him to get a book to read. I now get it for all of my new mom friends. It’s a fun book, you can make lots of funny voices, and my son can now read along with me!

Thanks for posting about this book. I find the illustrations so beautiful. I researched a bit about her and she does amazing work. Her website is so alive, everything moves.. very cute :o)

I also listened to the podcast about you guys last night. It was great getting to take a glimpse behind the scenes. I think what you do is inspirational. Really out of love and passion for books! I am delighted to have received news of the this podcast on Barbara Knutson’s Love and Roast Chicken!

I am Barbara’s husband. Last week marked three years since Barbara passed away at age 45, but it is my sincere hope that her spirit continues to touch the
lives of children through her books long into the future.

A few scattered notes of possible interest:

As I suspect you are aware, her website has some author’s notes about the origin of each folktale, as well as some insights into her process in turning these cultural treasures into picturebooks. Barbaraknutson.com

She first encountered this folktale while we living in Peru, finding various versions throughout the Andes. We hiked deep into the mountain regions of Ecuador, Peru, and Boliva during her research. While she conducted most research for L&RC in Spanish, she also learned as much of the story in Quechwa and Ayamara as possible, the languages spoken in the highlands. She enjoyed the trading of folktales and the exchange would often fuel the evening conversations around steaming bowls of potato soup.

Barbara loved language as well as art, frequently reading her pleasure novels in French and Spanish.

Nature was also a passion, and was meticulus she was about the authenticity of her illustrations in this regard. Careful scrutiny of her books will show the stars as they appear in the southern hemisphere, the plants and animal species to be those that she had observed. She kept detailed sketch books to record her observations. I know she felt it essential to convey multiple aspects of the culture in retelling of the folktale, even the cadence of the prose. (She was an accomplished flute and recorder player, so I think language was something she observed and felt as well.)

I read Not Norman and was delighted! My Grandson was tickled by their relationshop! What else has Ms. Bennet written, I would love to read more of her stuff!

Oh, this one reminds me of a family I nannied for. They had two guinea pigs who trained me well. Every time they sensed my presence they would squeel like crazy until I fed them. The children would hitch them up to wagons made out of shoeboxes and race them down the hall. Sadly, I was also there when one of the guinea pigs died. Pets can be so important to the emotional development of children!

Great review, y’all! My eight year old reads this one over and over, too. He just loves it. The poems and the illustrations work really well together; I agree!

I’m so glad you reviewed this here. I really loved this when I read it for the Cybils. It was a real rollercoaster of a read. I’m hoping to pair this with Teammates by Peter Golenbock when I teach issues of tolerance this fall.
