54. "BEST MEN" HOCKEY TEAM !!

A chap is getting married this weekend up in Ottawa, and he asked me to do a CARICATURE of his 5 Best Men!        He wanted to be in the picture also, and suggested I draw them all as Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Players! Of course, he wanted to be the goalie, and he gave me all the numbers to place on the various jerseys, and here is what it looked like:

55. Smiths Falls Collage

I was given 4 photos of some Smiths Falls scenes and asked to create a simple sketch of them all composed in a Collage!
It was a bit of a struggle to picture how the diverse scenes could be molded together, for the photos were the Fountains in the Park, the Mill, the Library and a Canal waterfall! Very different to see it all together! I enjoy pen and ink, but in this one, I did my best to finish it a s quickly as possible, to keep the 'sketchy' feeling of the work at the highest level!  Hope you like it!~~~John

56. Back Online AGAIN!!

My ISP had a problem and I lost my internet connection!!  Let's hope to hear no more of THAT!! ha!
We're having a wet summer so far, and my wish is that we have seen the last of it, for we don't have too many more days left in the sun!!
I have here a picture of a lady who visited my Caricature Easel with her pet Rabbit on a leash!! I have not seen one on a leash before!!  She wouldn't let me do more than take a picture of her muffy rabbit!! ha!
The "Fair Jean" is anchored in our harbour and attracts many for her beauty !

Working on a painting of "Courthouse Square" here in Brockville. Will get up a pic of it as I do more on it! I will be painting it out on the scene itself, starting next week! People are attracted by an artist with an easel, and it helps the sales of my Pen and Inks!!

Soon I will be up at the Smiths Falls Festival, on the 18th of July. It should be a big one this year!!

Send me any queries you may have, or a request for a GIANT COMIC GREETING CARD!!

63. HMS ST.Lawrence Warship

The St. LAWRENCE was planned by William Bell as Threedecker and/or as First Rate with 112 cannons.
She had been built only for the service on the Lake Ontario.
Due to the fact that she was not planned for transport of large supplies or loads -
she could never reach the open sea due to her depth of approximately 6 meters –
she was smaller built than her Ship-of-the-Line sisters on the open seas.
Her total weight was only 2300 tons in relation to approximately 2500 tons of a comparable ocean battle ship
and her width was up to 16 meters, while the approximate length of deck was 59 meters.
Nevertheless the St. LAWRENCE had three artillery decks and an enormous firepower from 112 cannons and 14 Carronads,
which exceeded comparatively those of the famous HMS VICTORY.
On their lowest artillery deck of the fresh water battle ship she had enormous 42 pounders cannons,
a caliber usually not found on sea-ships, but only in fortress on land.
She had on the lowest deck also as well as on the middle... Read the rest of this post

66. The 1814 HMS St. Lawrence

I am working on the largest warship that ever sailed the Great Lakes!! She was built in Kingston, and made quite a comotion when she hit the water! She was Sir James Lucs Yeo's Flagship, "HMS St, Lawrence"
She had 102 cannons,arranged in two tiers,manned by 1000 men,with a 60 foor beam, 190 feet of keel and a 23 foot draught.
She made two voyages to Niagara with troops and stores in the autumn of 1814, and after peace was declared, was used as a floating barracks at Kingston, but was eventually sunk in Kingston Harbour.
She was alone more powerful than the combined American Fleet and Commodore Chaucey, withdrew his vessels to Sacket's Harbour and tried to begin building a ship to match her! It was never done!
I am creating the scene of her passing the Blockhouse Island at Brockville. She must have been quite an impressive sight from shore!!

This is another of my scenes for the Kiddie "Colour Your History" Book!!

67. :COLOUR YOUR HISTORY

My new Book for Kids is called:  "COLOUR YOUR HISTORY" and has many items from the Brockville Museum in it! There is also a train connection in the book with Smiths Falls, because the trains that run here, also ran up there!! So, I have some Railway items in the pages for colouring! It is to be published in the next month and I will be selling them wherever I am Caricaturing this year!! The book will have  Brockville Cover for sale in that town, and a Smiths Falls cover for retail up there!!                   Here are a few examples!!

68. Board Games

HAve you ever thought of designing a Board Game?  I did!
Here is one I put together, using Ronald MacDonald as the game surface, and everyone plays with little 'Hamburger Chips' trying to get safely into Ronald's big pocket, using his pocket watch for counting, cause I knew they would never go for dice!    I even used all of the characters that MacDonalds have made famous over the years.
I told them I had a price for printing and colating the whole game with pieces and plastic wrapped at 27 cents each game per million printed!! The price came from Taiwan.   Imagine!  They could sell it at the counter for $1 and make money!
Back to the drawing board!! ha!
What did MacDonalds in Toronto do with it?  Nothing,...they just put it on file down there!

69. New Prints on Art Weave Stock

I wanted here to show you, if I can, a close-up of the texture on the Prints I am offering on my Website.
This is the very first Pen and Ink I have ever created, back in 1964 !! Imagine!  (I've been around for that long !   ha!)
"Dinant Citadel,Belgium 1860ad"  I worked from an old engraving I found, and did my best to Pen and Ink the scene as it was portrayed in the small engraving.
The Print (only 100) is 26"x20" on this Art Weave textured Stock that feels like a heavy watercolour paper. Vandyke Brown Ink and signed and numbered by me!
If you look closely (using the zoom in feature), you will see the nice texture this Print has to offer !!
I have 16 left, and look forward to mailing you one,... if you're interested !!  Great gifts also!!

The second Print of the same size (26"x20") on the same Stock with similar Ink, is the "Chateau Combourg France,1016ad" from another old engraving! Check the detail and the texture!! Quite a scene for someone who loves old castles,..like me!!... Read the rest of this post

72. Brockville Mayor, David Henderson

Here is the finished watercolour Portrait of our Mayor here in Brockville, with the photo I worked from that dispalyed the Mayor's "Chain of Office".
He has assisted me in many ways and supported some of my ideas as an artist here in town, and I thought it would be nice of me to show my appreciation of his efforts on my part.
Mayor Henderson has been quite active in such a variety of expressions since he took office, with many inovations that were exciting to realize.
I wish him all the power to continue to show leadership and creativity while maintaining a good grasp of our heritage in this historical town.

It was on his desk when he came to work this morning!                              That expression was the reward I wanted!!   ha!!

74. Principle Forms Of Celtic Art

THE PRINCIPAL FORMS
OF CELTIC ART

Knotwork
Knotwork was developed by the Picts of southwest Scotland. The earliest knotwork was based on a simple diagonal weave pattern similar to that found in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Mediterranean cultures. But the Celtic artists were the first to discover how to break the cords and rejoin them into repeating knots, and how to combine patterns to fill larger panels.

Knotwork patterns were likely first used in stonecarving and metalworking. When carved in relief, each cord actually descends deeper to pass "under" the next cord, casting deep shadows into the stone. In gold and silver metalwork the cords do not sink as far, but the effect of flashing light on the raised edges makes them stand out brilliantly.

The later scribes, working on a flat sheet of parchment with pen and ink, simulated the three-dimensional knots by coloring the background darker than the cords. Due to their extremely fine brushes and quill pens, by the time of the Book of Kell...

75. Himself and The Girl Next Door

Himself and The Girl Next Door

Himself Went into Confession, and knelt in the Holy stall.
He said, “Father, forgive me, for I have sinned – shall I start with the great or the small?”
The Father said, “Now listen, son, I’ll tell you where to begin,
We’ll save the best for last, and you start with the smaller sin.”

“Well, Father, me brother has a farm, and he brings me meat for me dish,
And I eat it on a Friday, for, God Help Me, I can’t stand fish.”
“Now God doesn’t care,” the Father said, “if himself owns a couple of dairies.
You can’t eat steak on a Friday, so that’ll be three Hail Marys.

Now tell me about the other sin, though I fear for the state of your soul.
If it’s any worse than the first one, you’re looking at Hell’s black hole.”
So himself said, “It’s my neighbor, she looks like that Sharon Stone,
“With lovely blonde hair and a killer shape, and she just won’t leave me alone.

“Each day when I’m making my dinner, I see her out on her lawn,
“And, Father I swear she has nothing at all b...
