Those of you who follow my blog will know that this year has been a little patchy for me so I thought a good way of giving myself a kick up my creative backside was by taking part in NaNoWriMo - yes, I really thought that writing 50,000 words in one month would be a good idea... Emma from NaNoEssex asked me to write a post for her blog and I thought it would be nice to share with you. So here we go - this is my NaNo blog, I hope you enjoy it!

NANOWRIMO – DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?
A couple of days ago an author friend of mine wrote this simple statement on Facebook: “I don’t understand NaNo”. He just threw it out there and I read the comments first with interest and then with an open mouth because I couldn’t believe the ferocity of feeling it generated – it appears that you either love NaNo or you hate it, there’s no middle ground. None at all. Nada. Nothing. And there was me thinking authors were a balanced bunch who could see other people’s point of view. Tsk. Silly me.
The comment which surprised me the most was this from an indie author: “I always think if you can write that much, just do it all the time. Plus a lot of people turn out garbage to keep up the word count. Just my opinion, but I think it’s ridiculous.” Ridiculous?! At least with Marmite if people say they don’t like it then the chances are they’ve tried it. How can anyone say it’s ridiculous without ever having tried it? My hackles were raised I have to say, so I feel I have to stand up and explain to the doubters why NaNo is not ridiculous and, in the process, also explain why it’s not always possible to ‘just do it all the time’. In a balanced way of course.
I happen to love Marmite and I love NaNo (although there are times when I’m struggling I could cheerfully smack the creator of NaNoWriMo with a large wooden spoon for having devised such a torturous event…). My good friend Stuart Wakefield introduced me to NaNo in 2010. From that one small initial NaNo meeting in Nero we met Brigit and Jane and the four of us started Writebulb, a writing group, in Chelmsford. Our very first speaker was Penelope Fletcher, a young indie author, who spoke to us about self-publishing. Heavens above, what a revelation that was! As Penelope talked I just knew it was something I wanted to do and as soon as I left the meeting I started self-publishing – me, who barely knew what a Kindle was! Here I am four years later – over 190,000 of my books have been downloaded and I’ve loved every step of the journey. Yes, that meeting in Nero’s four years ago was a catalyst like no other! Way to go Nano.
There is another reason why I like NaNo so much, but it’s more personal. This year has been very been busy and sometimes difficult. I’ve moved house, leaving the home I’d lived in for 24 years, into a house that needs a lot of work done to it. In addition, my father’s Alzheimers has deteriorated rapidly; he still lives in his own home but I am responsible for him and most evenings after work (I commute to London) I go and check on him and see how he is. I’ve tried to write, to keep up on social media but have failed miserably throughout the year – by the time I get home, unpack yet another box or paint (or even knock down) another wall, go to help my dad find whatever he’s lost, and then have some supper I’m usually too tired to do anything other than go to bed! When Emma contacted me to see if I would contribute to the blog it was like a ray of light shining through the dark (thank you Emma!) but then I thought hold on, I’d better sign up to NaNo if I’m going to write about it and immediately I did that panic set in. How would I cope? When would I find the time? Would stress finally overwhelm me? Nuhuh. Not one bit. The only feeling that’s overwhelming me is that I’m finally back doing something I love. I’m not stressed by trying to write 50,000 words because if I don’t make it the target, I don’t make it. That feeling of creating something has made me feel happy. Simple.
So – do you love NaNo or do you hate it?
If you still think you hate it then I’d ask you read this blog again because what I’m saying in a nutshell is that NaNo will give you the opportunity to go on a journey, to meet interesting people, to find support and encouragement, to learn new things, to spark that creative fire inside you and to give you a sense of achievement. It’s pretty damn good stuff.
If you already love it then hold fast – you’re now just over half way through and we will all celebrate together when it’s over. I’ll bring the toast and Marmite! Good luck everyone J
Halloween is almost here! I listened to the 'Halloween Adventure' the other night and it made me smile (Pat is such a good narrator!) so I thought I'd remind you that it is actually FREE to download both as an audio book and as an e-book. My favourite character is Frank, but it's a secret as to who or what he really is!
Here are some of Rob's Halloween drawings to get you in the spirit (sorry, had to get in one small joke...). Have a fangtastic Halloween everyone!
I can't believe it's almost two months since I last posted on the Burly & Grum blog. Go on, ask me what I've been doing for the last few weeks! I'll give you a clue - I'm shaking builder's dust from my hair as I type. Yes, I moved from the house I'd lived in for 24 years to somewhere new. Well, when I say new, it was built in the 1930s but somehow managed to get stuck in a 1970's time warp. Not that I'm against the 70s at all, it's just that after 40 years the wallpaper is looking a bit tired! I've been up and down ladders, knocked down walls, drilled holes, painted everything that doesn't move, and poor old Burly and Grum have taken a back seat.
Not that they've minded at all, they've been relaxing on the beach and have been sending me postcards to prove it.This one is from Grum...
And this one is from Burly (he's been a bit nicer and you will note he's bringing me back a present)...
Although there is still a lot to do to my new home (having a kitchen that doesn't resemble a war zone would be good...), I'm going to start concentrating once more on Burly and Grum especially as we were doing so well, for example, being finalist for the People's Book Prize. There are a lot of great opportunities out there and I will be putting my ear to the ground to see what developments have taken place while I've been 'away'. So the holiday for Burly and Grum is now officially over and they are limbering up to start work again - this is going to be fun!
Burly & Grum are great sports fans and are so excited that the Tour de France is coming to Essex. They have been busy preparing for days and are now well and truly ready to cheer on the cyclists as they come speeding through!
Yes, we know how to celebrate here at Burly & Grum - ice-cream, cake and good friends, what more could anyone want? 'The Secret City' may not have won The People's Book Prize but we're partying anyway because we got into the finals - yay! We'd like to thank everyone who not only took the time to vote but also left a comment about the book - it was wonderful of you, thank you so much. And if you have the time, please read some of the comments and you'll understand when I say I'll always treasure them and that they've given me the confidence to continue writing.
This is me saying thank you to everyone (I'm the short one on the right, the other one is my son who I nabbed as he strayed into shot).
Now, I've also been wondering what on earth has been happening with my blog. All of a sudden it seems to have gone crazy - one post has had over 16,000 hits and the last one 'Vote Now' over 9,000 hits. Why? What am I linked into I wonder? To anyone who is reading this and who has no idea what Burly & Grum is about then you can find out by going to the following 2 links where you can find out for FREE! Yup, we're very generous us Essex girls!
Anyway, the first link is for the audio book (about 15 mins long) The Halloween Adventure. It's really funny and Pat Scullion, the narrator, brings the characters to life. This particular short story is the one I'm working to link with Audible and put up on Amazon. The second link is for 'The Birthday Surprise', the third Burly & Grum book which is free to download from the Smashwords site. To all of those thousands of people who are now reading/glancing at my very small and insignificant blog - I hope you enjoy the downloads as much as Burly & Grum enjoy the conga. Now, I'm sorry but you'll excuse me because I have a party to go to. Er, where's the cake?
If you have a couple of spare minutes then it would be absolutely wonderful (Burly and Grum would love you and give you bear hugs forever!) if you could vote for them for The People’s Book Prize (children's section). Voting starts today and ends on 28 May.
Step One: Look down the page for ‘Burly & Grum and the Secret City’ and check the box.
Step Two: Go to the top of the page to the verification section "our choices, selected from The Finalists below..." and check that your vote has been selected.
Step Three: Enter your email address: Email Address (enter the same email address that you used when you registered).
Step Four: Repeat your email address.
Step Five: Enter the password we gave you.

Thank you so much and just one last thing, keep your fingers crossed!
Burlington Bear and Grum the Groblin have come a long way since they first met and wondered what was 'Beyond the Forest'.
They've had lots of adventures:
Taken part in the Olympics:
Made lots of friends:
And are generally are pretty cool dudes who would like to thank you for your support!
Yay - Burly & Grum are back! It seems strange to start blogging again after what has been quite a long break. Selling my home and trying to buy new one has proved incredibly time consuming and, believe it or not, I still haven't moved - I'm all ready, bags packed and raring to go but the legal side of everything is just moving so slowly. I'd love to live somewhere like Scotland where, I believe, you can buy a house and move in 24 hours later! Maybe one day it'll work like that here - I do hope so.

But that's enough of me, more than enough - on with Burly & Grum news! The final leg of The People's Book prize is now under way. You may remember that back in November that 'The Secret City' was one of the finalists in the Children's Section. It's been a long wait to get to the final point where the winners are finally revealed because the voting is seasonal. Now, however, all of the 36 finalists (12 from the three sections - fiction/non-fiction/children) can have their books voted on again by members of the public between 21-28 May. On 28 May there will be a grand award ceremony in London with Frederick Forsyth CBE giving out the awards to the final three winners. Keep everything crossed because I would just burst with pride if I won! And if you'd like to vote between 21-28 May that would be brilliant; I know that all of us here at Burly & Grum would be forever thankful! I'll put up the instructions as soon as I receive them from The People's Book Prize. I want to improve the Burly & Grum website, so that it's more interactive and I also want to start work on a book app for The Halloween Adventure in time for - yes, you guessed it - Halloween. There's a lot to do and I'm looking forward to getting going again - I've really missed Burly and Grum.
I'm sending Burly and Grum away on a short vacation while I move house. I'm sure they'll have a great time on the beach while I'm slaving away, sorting through 23 years worth of stuff in my attic, shed and every available cupboard! They'll be back I think in about 6 weeks relaxed and raring to go!
If you read my previous blog then you'll know that I'm very interested in turning the Burly & Grum Tales into book apps. I have had some reservations because most book apps for children consist of pictures that the child can interact with whereas Burly and Grum have a few black and white pictures scattered throughout the stories. But it's quality, not quantity that counts isn't it?! The Burly & Grum drawings are brilliant and will come alive even more if I can somehow make them animated and interactive. Simon's Cat is black and white and look what happened there so nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that!

I discovered a great site called Authorly - it's relatively new and the founders had the brilliant idea of encouraging authors to convert their books into apps for free. They provide the technical backup and support but basically an author just gets on with it (although they do have a production service for those who don't want to do it on their own). I have been a quaking my proverbial boots, but do you know what? I learnt to self publish when heck, I hadn't even heard of a kindle! I've learnt so much over the last couple of years that it makes my head spin and yes, I want to learn more! Why not?

In case you're wondering why there are odd Halloween pictures scattered throughout this blog it's because I've chosen Burly & Grum's Halloween Adventure as the first short story I'm going to convert. I've chosen it primarily because it's already an audio book it so adding word by word narration should be straightforward. She says optimistically. It will be another fascinating journey and I'll let you know how I get on!
Before Christmas I took an 8 week Storytelling course with Iversity. It was online and it was free - yay! - I spent about 2 hours a week working on it although I could easily have spent a lot more time going through the different modules. It really opened my eyes to endless possibilities especially with regard to transmedia and it left me feeling restless and wanting to do a lot more with Burly and Grum. But what and how without any money behind me? So this year has started off quietly because I've been thinking a lot and also having long chats with my friends
Pat Scullion (who did the voice-over for The Halloween Adventure and who is a talented designer, artist, animator) and also my publisher, Stuart Wakefield, a talented author in his own right. We've talked about doing audio blogs, redesigning the website, more social networking, audio books, book apps, approaching agents - in short I've gone around in circles. Nothing new there I hear you say!
But somehow, out of all of the ideas that have been discussed, creating a book app is the most appealing - I can put in a bit of animation (I think animation would suit Burly and Grum beautifully and bring their characters to life) and get creative but it is expensive so I'll have to put my thinking cap on and find a way around this. That's what thinking caps are for - finding solutions to problems.
This week you'll find me researching book apps and I have to say I'm really quite excited about it. I can see very clearly in my mind's eye what I want and I feel as though I've just taken that first tentative step although the right path so (a) keep your fingers crossed and (b) I'll keep you posted with how the journey goes!
I have to admit that over the last few weeks I've been wondering where I go next with Burly & Grum so taking the time to look back over the past year has been a good exercise; it's given me a few ideas and also a bit more faith in myself.
I started the year by writing a short story 'Burly & Grum and The Tiger's Tale' for the charity Save Wild Tigers. It was superbly illustrated by the incredibly talented Rob Jones and received a wonderful review from the actress Jenny Seagrove.
Pat Scullion and I attended the 'Tiny Tigers' weekend at St Pancras Station and had, as you can see below, a brilliant time reading to children.
This year I've been out and about visiting a number of schools and bookshops, talking to children about writing. In one particular school I spoke to over 180 students in three groups of 60 and their ages ranged from 5 to 9. It was quite a challenge but absolutely worth it - whether they coloured in pictures or wrote, they all worked incredibly hard, asked very interesting questions and created some wonderful stories. Below are just a few of the children I've met throughout the year - can I just say, you've all been marvellous and thank you for your incredible support!
In September I had the honour of being chosen to be a judge alongside Michaela Strachen and Sally Spedding for the respected children's 'Paws & Claws' writing competition. The competition closes on 31 January 2014, so if your children are bored tell them to start writing and enter their story as soon as possible! I was incredibly proud when 'Burly & Grum and The Secret City' was nominated for The People's Book Prize 2013/14 (children's section) and even more proud when it became a finalist! I'll have to wait until next year until I find out whether or not I've won and everything is crossed! I was humbled by all the support I received from Burly and Grum fans - thank you all so much for taking the time to vote for me. November was very special because I became involved in a local event created by the Imagine In-Print team which aimed to to tap into people's artistic talent. A huge 3D mobile was created and hung in High Chelmer Shopping Centre
and everyone was given the opportunity to read out the story or poem they'd written. We had a wonderful time!
Looking back I can see how wonderful the year has been. I've met many very talented and dedicated people along the way, I've learnt a lot and I am really looking forward to 2014. But I can't leave without saying a huge thank you to Stu and Lewis from Magic Toy Books - you are absolute stars and here's to 2014!
PS: I can't leave with telling you that my aim for next year is to look into animation - how cool would it be to animate Burly and Grum? Oh yes, very cool indeed!
Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas from
the Burly and Grum team!
I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who has voted for me and I know that even if I don't win I've been overwhelmed by the positive and encouraging comments people have left which have given me belief and hope that Burly and Grum are characters that are loved and that my writing isn't too awful!
When I first published 'Beyond the Forest', the first in the Burly & Grum books in 2011, I had no idea of the journey that lay ahead for me. For one thing, I've learnt an incredible amount - when I started I had barely heard of a kindle let alone a tablet, but now I can self-publish, I know about social networking and have made many friends along the way. I already knew I loved the creative process of writing but I had no idea how much I would enjoy learning about new technology and being part of the new tidal wave of indie authors that has changed the face of publishing.
Just a few years ago I was getting comments back from publishers and agents saying my writing was good but that it wasn't quite right for the market, a fair enough comment but no one can take away the feeling of sheer pleasure and pride I get from publishing and seeing my books on Amazon and Smashwords. Below are a few of the comments Burly & Grum fans left on their People's Book Prize page - I know still I've got a lot to learn but I have to say that I'm looking forward to each step I take along the way and my love and thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement!
Yes, see what happens when I'm bored on a Sunday afternoon? I end up playing with Paint and Publisher and the result is above! Actually, I don't think it's that's bad for an amateur is it? :)
But I digress! Thank you - thank you everyone who has voted for The Secret City in the People's Book Prize! The competition ends on Saturday, 30 November so there's still time to vote if you haven't done so already! I'll keep you posted as to what happens. I'm up against some really great authors and I'd like to wish them all good luck as well :)
The photograph above shows just how creative everyone can be if given the right opportunity. The spectacular 3D mobile that hung from the centre of High Chelmer Shopping Centre in Chelmsford was created by people both young and old living in Chelmsford and it simply sparkled with colour and light - the more you looked the more you could see. Everyone who had contributed in some way made their way to the shopping centre last Sunday to celebrate - they read out their stories and poems, many of which were written on pieces of the mobile hanging above them.
before relaxing and listening to others read their stories and poems:
I spoke to lots of people, most of whom were interested in writing and expressing themselves and I hope to follow their progress as writers - it was really very inspiring and all in all was a day I'll remember for a long time! This project, Imagine In-Print, was the brainchild of Vicci Button and Karina Siba - they worked incredibly hard and should be very proud of what they achieved in such a short space of time and on a very tight budget.
And after all that excitement it'll be hard settle down again and get back to normal!
The deadline for The People's Book Prize (children's section) is now looming, so I'd like to take this opportunity to thank anyone who has voted for me - I can't tell you how much it means to me that fans of Burly and Grum, my friends and family have taken the time to vote for The Secret City. If you'd like to vote then there's still time - it closes on 30 November. And thank you!
Right, now I'd better make a huge effort and try to get back to normal!
I promised you some pictures of the wonderful work done by the children of Chelmsford and here they are! I'll be at High Chelmer Shopping Centre, Chelmsford with the Imagine In-Print team talking to kids - big and small! - about writing and art this coming Sunday, 10 November at 2pm. Children will read out their stories and poems, they can add to the huge mural, MC Unicorn will be there - it'll be fantastic fun! - come along if you can!
I've been very impressed this week by the hard work of two creative ladies, namely Vicci Button and Karina Siba who, together, have together set up the Imagine In-Print project to link into the Chelmsford Ideas Festival 2013.

What they wanted to do was to tap into children's creativity, to encourage them to write stories, poems, to draw, to explore their natural talents, and I have to say they have they done a brilliant job! For four days this week Vicci and Karina have been based in Chelmsford library working with children aged between 8-14 years old. Overseeing the whole project has been 'The Poet' aka MC Unicorn who wants to publish the children's writing in 'The Unicorn Horn', a monthly journal. As you can see from the picture below, Vicci wasn't always in the library but spent a great deal of time cutting out large sheets of coloured perspex into different shapes - birds, words, umbrellas, the sun, etc. The children wrote their poems and stories onto the perspex shapes. These are being hung (as I type) as a huge 3D mobile in
High Chelmer Shopping Centre. I don't have any pictures at the moment will will let you have some as soon as possible!

So, how am I involved? Well, I will be at High Chelmer Shopping Centre, Chelmsford next Sunday, 10 November at 2pm to talk about writing and to encourage people young and old to give it a go. Some children will read out their own work and there will be lots going on - it's going to be a lively event! I hope that many budding writers will be encouraged to publish their own work - even the very young ones. As and when I have more information about the event I will let you know!
Look at me all dressed up and ready for Halloween hehehe (you have to imagine that last bit as a cackle...). I'm really looking forward to the event and Rob has done a few extra drawings especially for the occasion (thank you Rob!). Look, we now have some trick or treaters to join Burly & Grum on their Halloween Adventure:A vampire - Frankenstein:
and, of course, Halloween wouldn't be the same without some ghosts! Whahahaha!
Don't forget - if your children are bored this half term then sit them down and let them listen to The Halloween Adventure (audio version) which just happens to be
FREE from
Soundcloud! They'll love it -
Pat is such a talented narrator and makes the story come alive :)

I have this week off work and in between doing an awful lot of general running around I hope to help Vicci and Karina with workshops they are holding over four days in Chelmsford for Imagine In-Print, a great project for children that involves invisible ink, code breaking, messages in bottles, poetry, stories, invisible parcels and a really cranky unicorn! Writing will be published in 'The Unicorn Horn', a monthly journal for unicorns, and will also be transformed into a 3D art installation, displayed in High Chelmer Shopping Centre, Market Square and other key locations around Chelmsford. Sounds brilliant doesn't it? And did I tell you it's FREE!!! What parent doesn't like free events? If you want to know more then go to this link.
So, it's another busy week - I'm going to need to treat myself to a large bar of chocolate to keep my energy levels up (I've just discovered Cadburys' chocolate that has daim bar chips in it - way to go Cadburys!).
I have lots to tell you! As you may remember from a previous blog, Burly & Grum and The Secret City has been nominated for the People's Book Prize (children's section). Yay! I did a little skip of happiness when I first heard that news, but can I just say that since then I have been absolutely blown away by the support I've received from readers, friends and family. If you get a moment, look at the wonderful comments that people are leaving on 'The Secret City' page - I got quite tearful at one point whilst reading them because I couldn't quite believe that people would actually go to the time and trouble to write such lovely things about my work. To everyone who has voted and commented, thank you so much, it means a great deal to me that everyone - both adults and children - are reading and loving the Burly & Grum books. The more they are read and loved the more chance there will be for me to write even more! On a different note altogether - WHAHAHAHAHA - yes, it's almost that time of year again - HALLOWEEN! Don't forget that Pat Scullion's audio version of The Halloween Adventure is FREE to download and hey, it's really, really good!!
This afternoon I'll be meeting Vicci who is working with our local council to set up a creative writing and community art project Imagine In-Print. She's very kindly said that Burly & Grum can have a stall but not only that I'll be helping children with their writing projects and reading to them. I don't know a great deal more at the moment but I'll keep you posted - sounds exciting :)
Below is a picture sent to me by Emma aged 10 who coloured it in using Paintbox. It's absolutely gorgeous, thank you so much Emma, you are incredibly talented and you must also be very patient!
And for all those children out there who love writing, don't forget to enter the Paws n Claws competition and you could see your stories in print. Told you there was a lot going on - and I'm loving it! :)
Are you aged between 9-16? Do you have a great idea for a story about wild animals? If the answer is yes to the above two questions then you should go to the Paws n Claws Publishing website where there's a great writing competition which you will love! The competition is open until 31 January 2014 with the winners being published in the next Wild n Free book which will be sold to raise funds for the Born Free Foundation, a charity that works throughout the world to help stop the suffering of wild animals. Apart from myself the judges are the TV presenter Michaela Strachan:
and Sally Spedding, a mystery crime writer: The competition is the brainchild of Debz Hobbs-Wyatt - thank you Debz and I'm looking forward to reading all the entries!

Last week I was gearing up for action after my summer break and it already it's all go!
Firstly, I'm so pleased and proud to announce that Burly & Grum and The Secret City has been nominated for a People's Book Prize Award (children's section).
It's up against many other childrens' books, all of them written by very talented authors and I am honoured to be alongside them. Please spare a moment vote for The Secret City if you or your child enjoyed reading it - there's room for you to leave a comment as well if you like. The People's Book Prize was founded by Tatiana Wilson who wanted to give new authors an equal opportunity in the marketplace, based purely on their talent and ability. Writers' works are voted by the public and that not only helps to raise the profile of the author but also highlights the importance of libraries and bookshops and encourages new work. Thank you Tatiana! My second piece of good news is that I have been asked by Paws n Claws Publishing to be a judge for their children's writing competition which will start on 16 September - so watch this space for more details on how to enter! Paws n Claws work very closely with the Born Free Foundation, the charity Burly & Grum also supports and I am delighted to have been invited to work with them!
I've had a wonderful couple of weeks holiday because yes, I dared to 'go bear'! Don't worry, it's not as shocking as it sounds, I simply took a leaf from Burlington bear's book, turned off the mobile phone, stepped back from social networking and now am feeling incredibly relaxed.

With just one day of peace and tranquillity left I feel as if I'm slowly waking up and I'm looking forward to picking up where I left off because there's lots to do that's for sure. I've had a few offers to speak at schools and bookshops and will be writing to them soon to make arrangements. I've got a couple of ideas for Burly & Grum short stories along the line of The Halloween Adventure (which is still FREE to listen to and also read so go and download it now!) and I want to update my webpage. I've received some lovely drawings from children and will be posting them very soon - I just have to get my scanner to work... But I'll just do everything in my own time and not get stressed because I rather enjoy being relaxed! All in all I have lots of plans and also I hope that by the end of today I'll have something really exciting to share so watch this space!
The People's Book Prize aims to find, support and promote the work of new authors and celebrates reading. It's unusual in that the prizewinners in each category (Fiction, Non-Fiction and Children) are actually chosen by members of the public, i.e. anyone can pop onto the site and vote for the book they like best. The patron is Frederick Forsyth CBE but the brainchild behind it is Tatiana Wilson who wants to give new authors an equal chance in the marketplace. All I can say is well done Tatiana! I've supported other authors by voting for their work but then a few weeks ago Burly & Grum and The Secret City was put forward as a contender to The People's Book Prize organiser and it was accepted! How wonderful is that? In a few weeks people will be voting for (or not!) for The Secret City - I'm absolutely terrified and thrilled at the same time! I'll certainly keep everyone updated with what's happening.
It's also been a great week because both The Birthday Surprise and The Halloween Adventure received 5* reviews. I try not to get too caught up in looking for reviews because that way obsession lies but every now and again I pop onto the various sites - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords etc to see how Burly & Grum are doing and I was really pleased to see the new reviews. To me, the fact that someone has taken time out of their day to sit and write about one of my books means a lot - this is a busy world and it's easy to read a book and move onto the next one without leaving a review but they are important to us authors because we can't improve without listening to what readers have to say. So keep on writing those reviews - good or bad - we need them!
At the moment I'm also planning to do lots of writing during my leave - I'll be getting up early each day and sitting down to write so I can get out and enjoy the sun. Those who know me will be raising their eyebrows at this declaration because I'm really not good in the morning but I promise I'll be doing my best! I'd also like to pop along to the London Writers' Cafe for an event they're holding for children/YA authors - it's always good to meet other authors and also to learn from the experts. I've a busy time ahead and I have to say that I'm really looking forward to it! :)
The summer sale at Smashwords was, I'm pleased to say, a great success and a cause for celebration (hence the balloons!). A huge thank you to everyone who downloaded the stories. Although I didn't make any money, many readers contacted me via the Burly & Grum website to say how much they loved the stories and Rob's drawings, which was just the response I wanted. :) Quite a few people have asked if I could make some Burly & Grum greetings cards and the answer is I'm definitely going to put my mind to it - a few months I bought some blank cards from a craft shop to experiment on, but to be honest I haven't go them out of the packet yet! I will, however, now be trying my best to get this sorted. I've been reading about a site called Gumroad which is an alternative way to sell goods and would enable me to sell not only my books but extras like greetings cards. There's so much I'd like to do with Rob's drawings - they're so simple but full of character and they look great printed on badges, sticker, postcards, etc so I'm definitely going to have to start getting creative and do more with them. I'll investigate a little more when I'm on leave in a couple of weeks so watch this space!
