Earlier in the year I worked with Dr. Heather Wittenberg in developing images for her potty training guide,
"Let's Get This Potty Started!" In every project, there are sketches that aren't always exactly right for the story, but fun images in their own right. I've taken a few reject sketches and finished them out for my
stock collection on The ISpot.
… it has been awhile! We've both been working on longer-term projects which we'll be able to share soon! In the meantime my first samples for two board books recently arrived at our doorstep (the poor UPS man, our dog Prudence really doesn't like him and always lets him know). You can sneak preview
Up in the Hawaiian Sky by Lavonne Leong and preview/buy
Twinkle, Twinkle, Small Hoku at Amazon. These are the 3rd and 4th board books I've illustrated for
BeachHouse Publishing,
thanks to Jane Gillespie the editor! Here are links to the 1st and 2nd books:
Sam Surfs and
Aloha Zoo. Oh, and here's a picture of Prudence on her way to the beach, so you can see that she is actually very nice, just not to the UPS man.

From Jing Jing—Just finishing up a new book for
BeachHouse Press called Up in the Hawaiian Sky by
Lavonne Leong. It was a lot of fun interpreting the land/seascape that I love so much into picture book illustrations. If you have visited the different islands of Hawaii, you know that the physical landscape of each is quite different. The scenes in this book are inspired by the pali of Maui and Oahu, the
coffee farms of Hawaii Island (home of world-famous Kona coffee) and
Polulu and
Waipio Valleys, both on Hawaii Island. I'm in the midst of a big project right now so I'm going to give Mike a turn on the next few posts. Aloha!!
I'm totally giddy over seeing my work animated by Passion-Pictures in Paris. Click on the images to see 2 different versions of the Friskies Rise and Shine campaign. Hope you like them, too!
From Jing Jing's desk— last summer stacks of sketches of bacon, eggs, roosters, chickens, salmon, cows and pigs covered my studio walls and floor. It's so much fun to see those images finally out in Friskies Rise and Shine ads for April and June. You can see the work in Good Housekeeping, Better Home and Gardens and Redbook (and others).
Mike's illustration for the Washington Post. The cover of the Weekend Going Out Guide. Always a fun project and a great client. This is his sixth Weekend cover.
Hola, this is Jing Jing. My latest is a fun series of potty training illustrations for a new publication by
babyshrink's Dr. Heather.
HI, this is Jing Jing. Here's one of my latest—another
Leche de Tigre poster image. This time for
WHEA's (West Hawaii Exploratory Academy) school benefit on April 13th at
The Script. WHEA is a charter school whose campus is right on the beach. From the road you can see all sorts of amazing things the kids are working on: hydroponic gardens, fish farming, trail building, etc. Sometimes when Mike and I take the time to surf early in the morning, or late in the afternoon, the first kids to hit the beach are WHEA students—they are directly involved in the marine environment they are learning about on a daily basis.

Well, well, well. I'm officially a blogger. "About time!" says Jing.
Yes, yes, I know. I'm looking forward to sharing some drawings, ideas, typos and rambling nonsense.
Here are images from
Monsters Love Colors, my new picture book from
Harper Collins. This is the first in a series.
I'm currently working on a number of fun new books, one of which will be out this summer from
Beach Lane (Simon & Schuster) titled JUNYARD. Awesome!
In a holding pattern right now, updates coming soon...

This was an image I developed for the Alan Lomax Project, a festival happening in Boulder, CO. in May.
Alan Lomax was an
ethnomusicologist, recording the traditional music of many different cultures. The collection is a treasure trove of the many influences of contemporary music. I think this quote best sums up the importance of his work,
"The dimension of cultural equity needs to be added to the humane continuum of liberty, freedom of speech and religion, and social justice."Alan Lomax, 1972
Ancient Polynesians navigated the Pacific using constellations as their map. They were literally setting out into the unknown using only signs of the universe to guide them. This is a sneak preview of a series of images I am doing for
BeachHouse Publishing. In the story, a young boy is part of a paddling team journeying through rough waters. I included "honu" (green sea turtles) because Hawaiians consider these beautiful creatures as reincarnations of our ancestors. I love the idea of never being alone, the wisdom of spirits being a constant guiding light.
The butterfly design I did for
Crayola's Dry Erase Travel Pack is on store shelves now. This product will probably save many parents from finding melted purples, oranges and pinks on the dashboard or stuck in the seat or under the floor mat. Not that I ever lost any of my crayons in any of those places. At least I didn't purposefully melt them on the radiator like my husband Mike did as a kid!

I started working with Leo Burnett in June of 2013 to develop an image for McDonald's Lunar New Year promotions. In 2013, it's the Year of the Snake. As a kid, I remember celebrations always meant traditional red envelopes with money and savoring my favorite sweet sticky rice cake called
nian gao. 2013's snake happens to be a Water Snake. The river flows through time connecting past and present. And of course, no Chinese New Year is complete without fireworks! The final image is about 30 x 40 inches. The top image is a detail of the overall poster.

According to some of my South Kona (a state defined by a way of thinking, a way of life) friends—we are coming into a time of strong communication and empathy. Sometimes we mistake tweeting, blogging, posting on the internet as communication. The part we can forget (myself included) is the being present and listening part of a dialogue. So here's a toast to 2013—staying connected by being part of an "active" (contributing and listening) dialogue with friends old and new. Think of all the wonders that will present themselves to us just because we are listening more!
Mike and the first copy of his new book
Monsters Love Colors published by Harper Collins. I'm sharing this photo because Mike's smile really makes me laugh. It's the smile of the kid whose picture won the coloring contest, chosen by the teacher for the bulletin board or put up by mom on the refrigerator. Mike's illustrations reflect the goofy humor and joy that he shares and tortures the family with every day. I'm so glad that the kid's books give him an outlet for all the energy :).

A two headed snake seemed like a good idea for the next
Leche de Tigre concert. We're playing two nights in a row at the Aloha Theatre. Sunday Dec. 30th and Monday Dec 31st. 2013 will be the Year of the Snake, specifically the water snake. Here in Hawaii, we actually don't have snakes. But if we did, I imagine they would be emerge from the heat of the lava and slither towards the ocean to cool off.
If you haven't heard us yet, check us out on our website where you can get a
free download. These will be high-energy shows with lots of booty shaking. When's the last time you shook the junk in your trunk?
Get tickets on-line at www.ldtband.com or in Kona at
Kailani Surf Shop,
Kiernan Music and
Music Exchange.

Recently I finished 2 illustrations for a story about twin sisters who are at odds with each other. They are each other's "Evil Twin". Though I'm not a twin, I do wonder sometimes if the inner voice that is telling me, "That's impossible!" or "You can't do that!" is actually the voice of my Evil Twin. "No," I remind myself, "that's me, limiting me." Then I listen to
Macklemore's Thrift Shop. The refrain, "I feel f'ing awesome." makes me smile and move on. Do you feel like you are battling an Evil Twin?
