26. Evil Twins

Recently I finished 2 illustrations for a story about twin sisters who are at odds with each other. They are each other's "Evil Twin". Though I'm not a twin, I do wonder sometimes if the inner voice that is telling me, "That's impossible!" or "You can't do that!" is actually the voice of my Evil Twin. "No," I remind myself, "that's me, limiting me." Then I listen to Macklemore's Thrift Shop. The refrain, "I feel f'ing awesome." makes me smile and move on. Do you feel like you are battling an Evil Twin?

27. Monsters

This is one of 3 images I did for the December/January issue of Educational Leadership magazine. The article talks about how Common Core standards can overwhelm and intimidate both students and teachers. I like the Art Director's proposal that the standards be portrayed as a monster which becomes less intimidating as the children become familiar with it.

29. Gratitude—Happy Thanksgiving

You can’t help but feel gratitude when looking out at the horizon, where the vast sky falls silently into the ocean. Some days, the line between sky and water is barely perceptible. It feels like you are standing on the edge of an infinite blue space. Maybe the edge of the universe.

There are still places on this island where you can experience this kind of openess by yourself. There is room to think and then room to let the breeze and waves wash those thoughts way, far away.

Before I fall into the abyss of silence, Prudence barks, tail wagging, ready for action—but that moment of peace is a touchstone for the rest of the day.

31. Birds of Paradise

Several weeks ago, I injured my right hand in a surfing accident. The bruise covered the front of my hand and went all they way through to my palm. Luckily, nothing was broken. But for a long time, I could only use my pointer finger and thumb. Thank goodness, that's all I need to use a computer mouse, so work continued. But in my down time, I couldn't surf or play my cello. So I made these birds. It was fun to just cut away with little kid scissors, mix colors, paint and be messy just with one finger and a thumb.

33. Illustration Friday: Tree

I just noticed that the property on which one of my favorite trees stands, is for sale. This beautiful rudraksha tree drops bright blue fruit called Shiva's Tears, on the ground. Inside each fruit (which is about the size of a small strawberry) is a seed which is used to string Buddhist prayer necklaces called malas. As the leaves on the tree mature, they turn a bright red and spin in the air as they fall to the ground. I've posted this image before but since it is on my mind, thought I'd share again.

35. Growing Ideas

I am always in awe of people who have beautiful gardens. Alas, I lack a green thumb—I'll just have to make do with the garden of my mind.

39. Monothon 2012: A Celebration of Hand Pulled Prints

One of my favorite places on the island is not a surf break or a forest. It's the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa. And one of my favorite events on the island is the Donkey Mill's Monothon, a fun event that brings together artists and art lovers in creating monoprints for an auction that raises money for the art center. This year, I only made it into the printing studio for one morning. Though I brought many sketches and ideas to the studio, I ignored them all and came up with the above. I'm not sure what it is, something happy, something that reflected my state of mind at the time. The auction is tomorrow night, hope to see you there—enjoying and supporting a thriving local arts community.

MONOTHON 2012: A Celebration of Hand Pulled Prints
Date: October 25 , 2012

Time: 5:30pm - 9:00pm

45. Sweet Images to Make Learning More Fun

I've worked with several educational publishers this year. Here is a series of spot illustrations for a kid's workbook. As a kid, I was always enchanted by the illustrations in my textbooks and workbooks. I hope that some of my images will bring that same feeling to kids sitting in a classroom now.

49. And now for a Musical Break

I am stepping away from my computer, paints and inks for more than a week to play with the band Leche de Tigre. First stop on 9/14 is Club Vinyl at the Hard Rock Cafe Club and Casino in Las Vegas, then we play 9/15 on the main stage of The Guitarfish Festival. From there we go to The Boom Boom Room in SF on 9/18, Ashkenz in Berkeley on 9/20 and finally at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz on 9/21. Hope to see you on the dance floor!
