1. The Shadow Speaker

Henry has decided we should all be up at 5:30 this morning so I'm here yawning and befuddled. Julie is " a bit of a mess" But the day has started with or without us so here I am.

Above is the Shadow Speaker from the comic I've been working on. I've made several attempts at this comic and so far nothing is quite how I want it but I'm still trying. I like the fully digital art I did but I find it takes too long, it's so precise. So now I'm trying a combination of pencil and digital. Hopefully this is something I can sustain. I'm also considering publishing and thinking about self publishing it in 30 pages collections as well as online. still thinking about it.

2. Back In The Den Of The Spider-Goblins

I've gone back to some of my characters for Maddy Kettle and have been refining and defining their look. I'm already underway with the book but this was requested by the publisher and it's a good idea. Now I'll have definite sketches of all the secondary characters to draw from. I also changed the look of some of the creatures a bit, taking this opportunity to make improvements. Sometimes this project feels like I'm making a short movie, on top of the story telling there is a huge amount of world building and design going on. Something I've noticed is I'll think I understand the look and personality of a character fully but after a few more sketches something better and closer to the heart of things emerges.Another thing is that Maddy is visually very shape oriented, the characters, the building and landscape are all built on simple shapes, despite all the hatching and shading. This revisiting allowed me to let some characters catch up to that more unified design.

3. Slink! Now with Even More Pen!

Nothing new here. I've actually posted this picture before but between pages of the Situation I managed to add some more ink to the bushes making them darker. Much improved to my eyes. This comic is starting to feel like a bit of a joke to me, in a good way. It feels like I've been doing it for years. The occasional panel here and there. Really, I think I may have started it last September. Which is a hilariously long time to be working on a three page comic. If you want to see the earlier version or other panels from Slink! click on the tag below.

4. FanExpo Day One

I had a pretty full, hectic day of running around, networking and getting books signed. Before I went to the FanExpo I got distracted by the sights and sounds of a busker festival happening on a blocked off street.Stilts, acrobats, robotic accordion players and a gigantic steampunk bicycle. The second picture is of a panel I attended on webcomics. On the panel was Cameron Stewart, Andy Belanger, Ramon Perez, Brian McLachlan and Karl Kerschl. It was incredibly informative and a lot of fun. Below are the Immonens! Kathryn and Stuart Immonen

  • are two of Canada's very best comic book creative people. The do lots of amazing stuff but the work they collaborated on Moving Pictures, a Nazi Germany era story about art theft, is one of the best comics I've read. Wonderful stuff. Also, Kathryn brought two Tove Jansson books to show me. Did I mention they are awesome?

Finally, a couple of goons from the Empire.
