1. Kangaroos Cancan Cafe Re-Opens for Business!

Yes, Julia Jarman and I have been campaigning to get Kangaroo's CanCan Cafe back in print (Julia has done most of the work to be fair), and the great news is, we succeeded!

Hachette have done a print run of 1000 copies - not many, but if they sell, they have promised more. So, to help keep the cancan alive, you know what you have to do!

Our book was originally published by Orchard Books, but this new edition is being put out by Hodder, publishers of Class Two at the Zoo, Class Three all at Sea and the new Class One Farmyard Fun, which I am working on right now. Both Orchard and Hodder are part of the bigger Hachette and it seemed more streamlined to have all our books under the same umbrella.

I am delighted to have this one back. It's always been one of my favourites for reading aloud in schools. I shall get my feather bower out again and dust off my cancan CD. Let the dancing begin!

2. Children's Library Mural - Creating the Rough

I am still working on my mural design for the new Wakefield Library. I have scanned in all the most interesting creatures the children drew during the illustration workshop, like this badger and flamingo. I've kept everything at low resolution for now, so my computer doesn't grind to a halt:

I explained to the children that my plan was to create a crazy chase through the library, so some of them drew useful sundry objects in the background of their illustrations, things like shocked librarians, flying books and library signage:

These were all very helpful to add a sense of the location and to help create extra chaos. I had to find a way to incorporate this great staircase too:

As I expected, some simple graphics behind the creatures was needed, to tie the whole thing together. I decided to make the perspective really wonky, to add to the fun and to help the staircase fit. I pulled the colours from the colour scheme of the library furniture.

I had to flip and resize a lot of the animals in Photoshop. I spent ages moving them around to try and fit as many in as possible:

I wanted to add one or two bits of mine too. The dragon from Dragon's Dinner was an obvious choice. It was the book I used to kick-start the project, since the story is one big chase, and made a great counter-point to the massive dragon on the left:

The library has a thing about crocodiles (there's a stuffed one under the floor in the museum downstairs), so I balanced the croc from Kangaroo's Cancan Cafe onto a computer. There's a couple of my other animals tucked in there too.

There's a big sceen mounted in the middle of the wall in the children's library, which I had to bear in mind. I thought it would be fun to use that as a prop too (though there is a risk it will be so well camouflaged by the mural, punters may not realise it is there!).

This is just a rough by the way. I will boost the colour and strengthen up the outlines of some of the animals before I re-scan them, then get rid of fold lines and smudges in Photoshop.

I thought photo-montaged books spines would be a fun wat to fill the bookshelves, the same as I'm doing with the computer screens (spot my website!), so I've been scanning in the books from my shelves at home. Picture books are very skinny though and only hardbacks have enough spine - even stretched, they don't fill much space. I've now run out, so will have to borrow some to fill the bottom shelf. That's why I am going for ordinary adult non-fiction to fill the end bookcase. I'm still half way through:

I will use this low res version as a template when I up the resolution. I want to do the real scans at the actual size I need them, without messing around in Photoshop (otherwise you lose quality), so the plan is to scale up the template in manageable sections, then measure the size of each item, scan it to fit and simply drop it in. In practise, I doubt it will be possible to get them exact, but at least things should only need a single tweak.

3. Gearing up for My Exhibition

Today John and I have been getting all the artwork together for my exhibition in Salford, which opens in July.

Many of the pieces I'm showing are the same as the Tameside show, so they are still in their mounts and just needed getting out of storage, but I wanted to update the show by adding pieces from two more recent books: Bears on the Stairs and Dragon's Dinner. I have substituted 4 images from each of these for older pieces (mainly from books like Kangaroo's Cancan Cafe and Open Wide, which sadly have now gone out of print).

I got John to dig around in my drawers (Ooo, Missus!) and find the relevant new spreads, then we gave them a once-over and he packaged them all up for me, ready for collection by a courier.

I don't generally exhibit my artwork, as the framing costs can be prohibitive, but the frames for this show have been provided by the original gallery in Tameside, so luckily that's one less thing to worry about.

4. Come to Corby!

Remember Corby's crazy Big Draw event in October? They have invited me back for their Play on Words Festival in March so, if you missed out last time, you have another chance to catch a storytelling.

And this one will be EXTRA SPECIAL, because I will be doing the events together with Julia Jarman, author of Class Two at the Zoo, Class Three all at Sea and Kangaroo's Cancan Cafe!

Now, anyone who has met either of us will know that we are both inclined towards over-excitement, so, when we get together it's very lively and a lot of fun. As well as the stories, there will be pirate songs and cancan dancing, and everyone will get to draw, including me of course!

If you want to join us, we will be performing on March 6th at Corby Library.

There will be 2 identical shows, aimed at 4 - 8 yr olds, from 11.00 - 12.30 and 1.30 - 3.00. Events are free, but you need to book a place by calling 01526 203 304, where you can also find out about all the other fun things that are going on for the festival, all over town: as well as loads of lovely storytelling, you can make a Gruffalo from felt, or weaving a story in willow - sounds fascinating!

5. Off to Edinburgh!

It's such a busy time just now that my head's in a bit of a spin.

By the time you read this, I will be in Edinburgh (trains permitting) getting ready to do my storytelling events for the Literary Festival.

I am really excited that they have invited me to take part this year, as it's the first time since Kangaroo's Cancan Cafe, which was a few years back now. And it's especially good news, because they have booked me to do 3 events for three different books: Stinky!, Class Three All At Sea and A Lark in the Ark.

Having hardly drawn breath since the exhibition opening and with my Bears on the Stairs artwork waiting to be done, deadline looming, it's all a bit busy-busy-busy and slightly mind-boggling having to pack and go away for three days, but I know I'll enjoy myself once I get there and get stuck in.

Luckily I don't really get nervous about events - a HUGE bonus I know - and I do enjoy being busy (I'm totally useless at sitting still and doing nothing) but I do sometimes get a bit frazzled, just trying to hold everything in my head!

Wish me luck with it all. The weather forecast is dreadful: rain, then heavy rain, and then... more rain again! I'll be needing an ark by the sounds of it.

6. Designing the Exhibition Space

The design of my exhibition space is being finalised this week. The work is all being framed, all the props are being made and the final layout decided.

We are now having mobiles of animals from Kangaroos Cancan Cafe instead of monkeys - I think the platypus and koala would be really funny. The monkeys are now part of a monkey's tea party instead, as in Stinky!
, with fake food etc for children's play. This will combine nicely with the magnetic flies game.

We are going to cut one monkey's face out, making a hole in the board, for children to stick their face through and be part if the party. If they stick their face through the other way, they will appear in the belly of the anaconda in Class Two at the Zoo.

There is a new idea (inspired by something we saw at the Quentin Blake show) - a quiz board about dinosaurs, based on Gnash, Gnaw, Dinosaur!, with round shapes you can twirl to reveal the answers.

I am a little disappointed that we are unable to include the ark now, with the little stuffed animals for the children to put into it. Some breakdown in communication meant that the publisher did not supply copies of Lark in the Ark for sale at the show, and so the curator has dropped the idea. Very frustrating!

We are still going to have the reading area, which will be a mock-up of Smudge's sitting room, with pictures of Smudge and her friends on the wall in frames, and Smudge visible through a fake window, playing in the garden. Aaah...

And since Giddy Goat is part of the show's title, he is going to be stencilled on the walls around the exhibition, leaping from picture to picture, or balancing on top of frames!
