1. Mid-winter Writing Retreat

Well, I'm off tomorrow to meet up with my writing partners for my October non-fiction book...so I won't be around until next week. Just wanted to congratulate Heather on her book cover and Tera Lynn on her mermaid books. It's all very exciting. So much going on here at Books, Boys, Buzz.

I got tagged over on Facebook for a "25 Random Things About Me," so I thought I would respond here and tag all of our readers for whoever want to weigh in in the comment section are welcome to...and the random thing I think is the most clever...well, I'll send you a copy of any one YA book that you'd like from one of our Buzz Girls.

Here we go...

  1. I've lived in four (4) states: Massachusetts, Virginia, Texas, Alabama
  2. My two kitties both have six (6) toes on their back paws.
  3. I'm a self-taught gourmet chef and I probably own every ridiculous kitchen gadget there is like a mango slicer and a rasper and an apple corer.
  4. I can sing "O Canada" - in English and in French.
  5. I think bean sprouts are the creepiest food there is.
  6. I still have all four (4) wisdom teeth.
  7. I used to be a child actor in the university town I grew up in. I was in The Sound of Music, The Music Man, The King and I, Showboat, Oklahoma!, and Help! Help! The Globbalinks!
  8. The first time I flew was when I was five years old and my brother and I rode in a crop-dusting plane.
  9. I'm allergic to tree nuts.
  10. I've met three (3) United States presidents.
  11. I have a photographic memory...which would have come in handy in college had I known then. Doh!
  12. Watched MTV premiere in August 1981 at my fellow cheerleader, Gwen's, house. She had a satellite!
  13. Can twirl a baton.
  14. My hair isn't naturally curly. = )
  15. I'm the baby of my family by nine (9) years.
  16. My grandpa was a master carpenter on Broadway and was nominated for a Tony Award.
  17. I sleep on my stomach.
  18. I saw a full-bodied apparition at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado back in November. It was...amazing. Total chill bumps and tears when I realized what it was.
  19. I still listen to my favorite 80s artists just like they're still on the radio: Rick Springfield, Hall and Oates, Journey, Billy Joel.
  20. Has sat in the chair of the Speaker of the House.
  21. I'm a cancer survivor.
  22. I could eat clam chowder for every meal.
  23. I'm addicted to online Sudoku...up to the "hard" level.
  24. I Google myself. (LOL!)
  25. Think that chocolate chip cookie dough is actually better than the baked cookies.

There you have it...25 random things about me. Now it's your turn!!

Hugs,
Marley = )

2. Tagged for 5 random things

I was tagged by Jan for five random things, so here goes!

1. I'm really short. Barely 5 foot 2, to be exact. My younger brother (16) is almost 6 foot 5. Who looks like the baby sister? Yeah, me. Everywhere we go. Argh.

2. I love pens. Seriously. I have zillions of them, some I use and some I save. My favorite colors to write with are dark green, dark purple and pink.

3. I'm addicted to tea. Green, white, herbal and red are my favs. Not a huge drinker of black tea, but I love iced black tea in the summer. I also keep a log off all of the teas I've tried and rate them based on whether I liked the taste, brand, etc.

4. I want a squirrel. Yep, in my house. Think Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when she says, "Daddy, buy me a squirrel." :)

5. I don't like monkeys. At all. Never have for some reason. Sorry Diana and Jen!

If you want to play, consider yourself tagged!

3. On the Road Again

I leave this weekend for a quick trip to Canada. Feel free to send me warm wishes as I visit with our neighbors to the North - the cold, snowy North.

My day begins early Sunday morning when I head to Atlanta. Yes, I realize that this is not the direction I'm supposed to be heading but you know how airlines can be. I hang out in the airport for a few hours there before flying into Buffalo, New York. From there, I will take my rental car and drive across the border. I have a feeling that it will be much more difficult to get into Canada than it is to drive South to Tijuana from here (and vice versa). My hotel is in Niagara-on-the-Lake which I hear is quite a pleasant little town.

On the Road
by Susan Steggall

Monday, I will meet our
Canadian Distributors for a Sales Presenatation of our Spring 2008 titles, followed by a lunch with author and illustrator, Tina Burke, who recently moved to Toronto from Australia. I'm not sure where I will end up that afternoon, but I meet the crew from H.B. Fenn for a dinner meeting later that evening.

Tuesday morning I have an early lunch with an editor from a Canadian magazine before heading back to Buffalo to try and make it home by 11pm that night. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the flights are not delayed but at this time of year, one can never be sure.

11. National Poetry Month: Needed Someone

I have good news and bad news. The good news is we have another wonderful poem from King Otho. The bad is that it is the end of National Poetry Month. Perhaps we can all include more poetry in our lives (and this blog) throughout the year and not just during Poetry Month. Enjoy!

Needed Someone

by King Otho

Grams drams
whiskey sans
the heart its power
the fruit its
bless this congregation of
bones and meat cells
breaker breaker
one nine
I got lipids parting
I can see the amino acids
STOP
Fluid druid solemn molecule
don’t ask
it’s in it that it is in
WHAT!!
What was that he just said?
About the whiskey?
And the handcuffs?
Oh no my dear, you see
this is the new model.
There’ll be hardly any clogging
no noticable seams
All for three times the original price
and don’t forget the mail in rebate
NO NO NONONONO NO
It’s the shoestrings
that’s how you can tell
Mexican labor don’t know
how to tie a shoe up like
the Vietnamese
Paulo is a tobacco roller.
The dark steamy Cuban wherehouse
filled with rolled Rrrrrr’s and
Dickens Classics.
They read to them down there.
Sitting on shiny cars
moist brown wrinkles under
white athletic undershirt.
And nothing you smoke weighs
under three pounds.
Senor, he thought it was
manditory fields
The Russians promised
Vodka.
The economy of the people
is folded hechos
No no Elsie
It was three butters crisp
ten doiley placemats
two trinkerdoons
And a handfull of hard candy.
The eyebrows are the hardest part,
but if you’re carefull
they can be sprayed on.
Your expression can be chosen from
our handy sample book.
Simply apply the cardboard spraymask
and a new look, in seconds!
A straight beats a flush
how many L’s in legally?
Two trains leave Miami
Moving in opposite directions
How long till the
End of Time?
If you flattened out the
facts curled up in your
lungs,
they would cover a
tennis court.

Born out of the seedy underbelly of the poetry scene at the turn of the millennium - The Buffalo Poets, known buffallo1.jpgfor their unique energy and wit, began hosting open readings as a direct reaction to Slam Poetics and cookie cutter style poets found in New York City.Hailing originally from New York City, the Buffalo are composed of four core members: Roger Kenny aka King Otho, Aaron Arnout, Noah Levin and David Acevedo. The Buffalo have many artists throughout America including, James Honzik, Michael Franklin, Kevin Callahan and the infamous activist Rafael Bueno.
