It is finally springtime in Chicago! I picked these tulips today to brighten up my studio. Wanted to share them with you.... Who wouldn't be inspired to make great art with these colors all around them?

Book author Teresa Anne Power and me at the John Thomas Dye school in Pacific Palisades. It went very well! We sold lots of books and the kids had a blast!

I visited the nature sanctuary again today, probably for the final time this year. These critters camouflaged themselves so well....I would have completely missed the praying mantis if it had not scurried as I walked past it. We seemed to have startled each other.
praying mantis (the colors are amazing!) The praying mantis was about 5 or 6 inches (approx. 13-15 cm) long.
grasshopper (I see you!)
It was nice to break away for a little while....I took Leon with me after hitting the gym. I am working at home on the children's book illustrations and a small side project this weekend. I am hoping to find a little bit of time to draw in my Moleskine tomorrow. My growing interest in nature photography and my new Moleskine have been great outlets to help me to relax lately.

Today's weather was so beautiful, you'd have to be inspired. It actually got my mind off the world's gloom-&-doom economic crisis, the sadness of the war, the upcoming election and my shrinking investments and how I am going to pay to heat my home this winter....I forgot about all of that for about 5 seconds.
I finally captured this spider with my camera today, something I have been trying to do for about 2 weeks. It lives in a peach tree near my house. It usually comes out after dark, but today when I was out walking, I spotted it having lunch. It eventually dragged the morsel back up its web and retreated into the leaves where it spends most of its time.
I also saw these interesting berries....which I am beginning to think may actually be related to some sort of peppers.
Love the textures of the berries and leaves against the fence.
I saw beetles...
and bees.
I even took Sunshine so that she could enjoy the warm autumn air. There were all kinds of good smells out there today.
And when I returned home, the postman had delivered a package for me today....these Halloween cards and envelopes arrived fresh from the printer!
All of that autumn air has me feeling generous. Leave me a comment on this post, and on October 13th I will draw 3 names. Each name I draw will win a free Halloween card with envelope!
These cards (and 8x10" prints) are also available and on sale through the end of the month at my online shop. If you buy any 8x10" print, you will also receive a free card with envelope while supplies last!
Ghoul'ed luck!

I have been unable to post any artwork lately since it is all for books yet unpublished and have been too busy to draw anything "on the side". So I thought I would post a photo so you know I have not abandoned my blog.
While at the Chicago Air & Water Show in August, I got to meet Florence Henderson, America's favorite TV mom, a.k.a. Carol Brady. Many of you who read my blog might remember that the actor who played her husband Mike Brady - Robert Reed (Rietz) was my cousin. So it was an honor to meet Florence Henderson. I showed her my driver's license with my last name on it so she would know I was legit. She said she still misses Robert and has fond memories of him. We chatted a bit and I found her to be so charming and congenial. Like many other American kids who grew up in the 1970's, I always thought she would have been the best TV mom to have. Meeting her assured me I was right!

Today while I was pulling weeds I spotted this little guy keeping watch over my garden.

That inspired me to add this fine art print "Symphony In The Pond" to my growing online shop. You can see all of my designs available by going to my website and clicking on my shop page.

On Sunday I met Andi Butler and her son Owen for brunch and then a drive out to The Lake County Discovery Museum for a Jim Flora exhibit. So cool!
Here is Andi taking some photos of the artwork while something in another room has caught Owen's eye.
I loved Jim Flora's fun designs. Many of his works were inked by hand.
But for me, it was the beauty I saw in the fields outside of the gallery which drew me outward for some amazing photos.
I love Black-Eyed Susans...
This little guy appeared to be doing push-ups! : )
Nature has created the most incredible designs....
This busy bumblebee was hard at work
And I loved the beetle sunning herself on a snowy bed of Queen Ann's Lace.
A perfect ending to the weekend...

Hello everyone!! Thanks for visiting. Today Sunshine and I are celebrating my 200th blog post! There is lots to share with you, so please read on...
Here I am posting my latest illustration in my Flower Girls series:
I am creating this series to sell as note cards/invitations when I launch my new online shop in July. They will all be printed in color (as the first girl is in the post below), and sold as a set of 6 (or 8..I have not decided yet). I will also be selling full-color prints of many of my other illustrations, including Halloween and Sea Princess.
Now, on to the fun stuff. A couple of months ago, Joan tagged me to list 10 facts about myself. For the sake of saving space (and because I cannot think of that many interesting things), I am adding my own twist to the list! So here are My Five Favorites for June 2008:
1. I love unusual scents, such as wool, silk, rain and lime peel.
2. Robert Reed, the actor who played Mike Brady on the Brady Bunch...well, he was my cousin. He was born John Robert Rietz. I never met him and he died in '92, but he is buried back here in Skokie, IL. I guess that makes me a Brady. Sort of. : )
3. I laugh when I am in pain. No, really. Ask my sister. She thinks it is the funniest thing in the world when I stub a toe or smack my head on a shelf because pain makes me laugh.
4. I love listening to this when I am painting or drawing. You can go to Pandora.com and create a sound track for your drawing session. So cool!
5. I love looking at photos of beautiful food and reading the recipes. In fact, unleash me in Borders and I head straight for the food magazines, grab 2 or 3, and sit for hours reading them from cover to cover. Occasionally, I will even BUY one. But my latest tasty morsel is this website! This photo below makes my mouth water. And chef Russell James even holds classes. So if I am ever in the UK, I will have to look him up.
(photo courtesy of The Raw Chef Blog and chef Russell James) The most amazing part of this Cacao Pistachio Florentine & Mint Ice Cream Sandwich is that is is raw and it is vegan.
I still have news I want to tell you all, but I can't yet. The suspense is killing me! But you never count your chickens before they are hatched, and so I'll wait. I'll wait until it is official and all my ducks are in a row. Hee hee....enough about chickens and ducks, this post is turning fowl. : ) (sorry, couldn't resist)
Thanks to all my peeps (another fowl pun) who have visited my blog on a regular basis and have been kind enough to leave me comments or email me. I am looking forward to the next 200 posts with all of you! Fo' shizzle. : )

I was washing and eating strawberries at the kitchen sink yesterday. I reached for this big, red strawberry and turned to wash it when I noticed a snail shell attached to the tip of it, like a perfect little pearl. I lost my appetite for the strawberries, but reached for my camera because I just had to share it with you. I was ready to put away my camera when I noticed that the snail was still living!

My daily visits to Diana Evans' blog and her "Yummy Sketch of the Day" daily food postings have brought back fond memories of the home based cake business my friend Melissa and I used to run from her kitchen. The biggest challenge was the wedding cakes because everything had to be made and decorated the night before, and of course wedding cakes call for many tiers and a flawless application of fondant or icing or both. So we are talking about many all-nighters and carefully transporting our cakes to finish decorating on-location the next morning. Our specialty was fresh floral cakes, but the characters were lots of fun, too, such as this lady bug cake with black sour ball eyes and licorice whip legs. I wish I had a better picture of this cake. I also like the way the yellow bridal shower cake turned out, since I had to make this one alone, and it was my first attempt at handling rolled fondant.

I had to make a decision that was really hard for me as a freelance illustrator: I had to decide to pull out of an assignment. The deadline for the picture book assignment was just too tight. I have worked day and night for the past 2 1/2 months, barely stopping to enjoy the holidays, running myself raw. My "free time" has been filled with creating new sample pieces, adding to my website, creating "give-aways", promoting myself, trying to keep the fiery momentum going. Freelance business can be oh-so volatile. I had wished for projects like this to come in June, July and August. Instead, they all came at once - during the holidays no less! And business rarely ever goes according to the schedule sent to you, especially in November and December when everyone's schedule is up for grabs. So....I realized that taking the job would have meant compromising my other current assignments, and nothing would have received 100% of my effort. By "nothing" I mean my assignments. And my students. And meetings. And the patients at the chiopractic clinic. And more importantly really, my friends, family, and myself. It is so hard to strike a balance at times, isn't it? And it is really hard to say "no" to assignments. Especially good ones - like PUBLISHED BOOKS! But I felt a sense of relief at the thought of not having this deadline hovering over me: a week to research and complete rough sketches, and then a week and a half for FINISHED, full-color art!! So yesterday I did something I have not done in at least 3 months: lie on my sofa with the dog, a wool blanket, a cup of hot cocoa and the television remote.

Sometimes, people are so passionate about a particular topic that theyll do something crazy " like, create a podcast. Elementary school teacher Bob Sprankle is one of those people. In the summer of 2005, he created the Bobby Bucket Show " a podcast about childrens books that introduced children to books thematically, taught comprehension and literary devices using guest characters, interviewed book creators and did on-location reporting in libraries and book stores. Mark speaks with teacher and podcaster Bob Sprankle about the Bobby Bucket Show, introducing books to children, getting hooked on reading no matter what the book, and using books to learn about the weightier issues of life. Books promoted: Holes by Lewis Sachar Any book by Patricia Polacco (our review of I Can Hear the Sun) During the interview, there is a one minute section about 11 minutes in to the show that has audible crackling in it. We apologize that we were not able to correct this short inconvenience. Participate in the conversation by leaving a comment on this interview, or send an email to [email protected]. Ciao Tiziana :)
Grazie e Benvenuta!!
