3. piggyness and woolliness

just trying out this crunchy new feature where you can add these fabulous boxes on your blog... In case you need a lovely new book for a special person of small stature in your life...

(one is cuddly and cozy and in a real live actual box--and one is guaranteed to get any child laughing--as well as learning manners at the same time) (when does that ever happen? since when was hearing "ELBOWS" yelled at you from across your cornflakes exactly fun?)

OK that's enough of this plug... but they're cool right? (the books and the boxes)

4. Bomu Medical Center, Mombassa, Kenya

Recently my friend Naomi from the wonderful children's charity, Project Sunshine, visited Kenya and brought books to build the library of Bomu Medical Center in Mombasa, which serves over 2,300 children and families living with HIV.

To help build their library, one of the books they brought along was Being a Pig is Nice (seen in this photo below with Project Sunshine volunteers in the Project Sunshine playroom). How cool is that?

For me it's especially cool because I was born in East Africa and lived in Kenya (Nairobi and Mombassa) for several years. I hope one day to go back...

Here's some information more information:
'Prior to Project Sunshine’s arrival, 27 children were enrolled in HIV treatment and care at Bomu Medical Center. To date, because of Project Sunshine’s clinic‐based educational and recreational programming three times per week, community‐based programming twice weekly, safe water, hand washing and healthy living programs, over 2,028 pediatric clients are enrolled in our programs. Our services, which are provided five days per week, provide continual support, education and creative outlets to children and families living with HIV/AIDS.

'According to a nurse at Bomu Medical Center, “Project Sunshine’s programs are an essential part of the HIV treatment and therapy at Bomu. Families turn to Project Sunshine just as they turn to medical treatment ‐ they can’t have one without the other.” '

5. save the date June!

if you're in NYC on Wednesday June 24th at 10AM come along for storytime at Barnes and Noble 150 East 86th Street (and 2nd Ave) and get your own personalized copy of two very important new books (we'd love to see you for some fun and laughs and very high jinks!):

  • one tells you all about how to get hitched (or at least pretend to if you're only waist high)
  • and the other tells you all about how to behave (if you're a pig especially)

These are essential things to know. And you need to know them. (Don't you?)

More info here.

7. Fun Finds for May

Thanks to Scholastic Parent and Child Magazine: they included Being A Pig Is Nice: a child's eye-view of manners in their FUN FINDS FOR MAY! read their review here.

I found my own fun find of May... some random person I don't know posted this... if you want a laugh check it out here.

Ahh, how very timely the release of Being A Pig Is Nice is turning out to be. (Evil violins here.) Yes, coming as it does right at the very peak of SWINE FLU pig season... (maniacal laughter.)

(Clever marketing on Random House's part.)

(Wait. Did they cause Swine Flu do you think?)

But whether or not it IS actually nice to be a pig is up for discussion. can you get pig flu if U R a pig?

8. the new emily post...

this is the original one... but now that I've written a manners book I do believe I am the next one. (I probably will lose the hat and the frilly frothy bodice thing though.)

As you probably know my manners are the talk of the barn and I'm known the world over for my exquisite table manners and social graces. Which is why I felt it my duty to share my wisdom and riches. The book comes out May 14th and it is called Being A Pig Is Nice. It is brilliantly illustrated by the uber talented Dan Krall who is also well-mannered and nice like me.

If you too would like to know how to behave in such a graceful fashion, buy our book without delay. Before you commit a gaffe in public and disgrace yourself and live to regret it. (If you don't want to know how to behave, you're probably a pig in which case you'll enjoy our book very much indeed.)

To pre-order your copy, check it out here.
