~~News Report!!~~
#1 Broken Promises is scheduled for an early October release! ~squee~ If it will be available for pre-order is still not confirmed, it depends on how long edits etc take, and considering it is right now sitting at 107k words…it may take a bit longer than usual.
#2 There will be a cover reveal sometime in Sept. (This is still being set up.) If you have a blog, I will be posting here on the page about sign ups for it. (And YES newsletter subscribers will still get the FIRST look!)
#3 I’ve made arrangements with a wonderfully talented editor to work on rewrites (and a very thorough edit) for Sweet Light. This will be going on thru this fall/winter (or until it’s all fixed up)
#4 This week I’m back to writing! Still not 100% if I’m doing Broken Kei or a 2nd Tales of Ever. I’ve actually started both of them… so we’ll see where my fingers take me
Thank you again, everyone, for your continued support!
~~~Hugs and rainbows~~~
I posted this over on my author facebook page (If you haven’t liked me there, you really should! Lots of teasers, updates and giveaways!) Anyways, for those who missed it I promised if Broken Aro got to 125 reviews on Amazon I’d post ANOTHER teaser of my current work in progress-Book 3! Well you all did it… so here you go!
Will there be more teasers? Hard to say… the book is almost done! Only a few more chapters to go and then it will be off to the editor :) It’s longer than I’d expected and been more of a challenge to write… Aro is being quite troublesome. :)
In case you missed it… the title for Book 3 is Broken Promises
Without further adeu… enjoy!
(1st draft- unedited!)
A hand rested gently on her head and a man spoke softly.
“Will you wake today?”
Though not reacting to the touch or words, they pulled at her, tempting her into wakefulness. The world shifted, other sounds teased her ears. Bed. She was in a bed, someone else had just moved from it.
The shhctk sound of flint and then a warm glow hit her eyelids. Though on her back, her head faced the light to the side. She could feel the weight of her hands across her stomach, the softness of the sheets over her, even the bed and pillow cradling her, yet she couldn’t make any part of her body move.
Her eyes fluttered open and closed a few times before she finally managed to hold them open. The blurred image of a man standing with his back to her came partially into focus before they closed again.
Confusion swirled through her thoughts once more. Had he been…naked?
The bed heaved as he sat on its edge. She heard faint sounds she eventually recognized as him pulling on pants, socks, boots.
By the time she managed to force her eyes open again she saw him pulling on a shirt. It looked very much like the one she’d worn in her dreams. The one she wore now? Had they truly been real?
She tried to focus, concentrating on this stranger. What had Damon said? She was in no danger? What did that even mean exactly?
Even sitting, the man appeared tall. Wide, well-muscled shoulders tapered to the narrow waist of a young man. Dark hair, she wasn’t sure if it was black or a dark brown in the low lamplight, hung in a slightly wavy mess to his shoulders.
He adjusted his sleeves and then tipped his head, pulling his hair from the shirt collar and then running his fingers briskly through it.
For a moment she forgot to breathe.
On the back of his neck, hidden by his hair, had been a rune. Even with her vision not working exactly as it should, she knew it to be the same as Prince’s. A glamor rune.
Her rescuer, or captor, was an Elf.
~Tales of Ever is suitable for readers 10 and up. Originally written as a novella series, it has been reworked and is now available as a complete novel.
A few months ago, I was a normal girl. Life sucked, and just like everyone else, I took the simple things for granted. At least until I got this new power, a “gift” my mom called it. Apparently, I’m a firestarter. I didn’t want to be. I didn’t ask to be. It would be cool if it wasn’t so dangerous and I knew how to control it. When an uncle I’d never heard of showed up to take care of me after my mom died, I should have been grateful. As it turned out, my whole family isn’t normal and more than a little bit crazy. I thought things couldn’t get any worse. I was wrong.
They banished me to Ever.
* * * * *
Welcome to Ever.
Ever; a deadly realm where feared, powerful, and dangerous magical beings are banished. It’s not a world, but a magically created prison you can never break out of. Who, or what, made Ever? I’ve no idea. They were powerful, and cruel. That is all I can tell you.
Ever is like, and unlike, every other world. Nothing is safe. Safety is a dream. Ever is a nightmare. Few survive their first day. Nothing is what it seems. If something appears safe, it isn’t. If something appears dangerous, well it is, but probably more than you think.
Ever has no sun, no moon, and no stars at night. Time is told by the ever changing color of the sky where portals open, dropping new inhabitants or new terrors. Time does pass. Don’t worry, you won’t get old. You won’t live that long.
The landscape changes without reason from desert to jungle. The flora isn’t safe at any time. There is food, if you can find it without getting eaten yourself. Most plants and animals are poisonous. So is the water.
Are you afraid? You should be. This is the end. It gets worse of course. Remember the portals? Do you think angels come through? Innocent people rarely do. Mostly, it is evil people, people too powerful to kill. Their magic works here. The creatures are worse.
Do you understand? Well, you will eventually, or you’ll die. There is no escaping Ever.
Ever.
“This book has all the components you love in a book; a real kick butt female lead who fights her own battles, adventure, mystery, and paranormal fantasy. If you like any of these characteristics, then you will love Broken Aro!”
Open your eyes to darkness. What do you see? Does the darkness frighten you? Now imagine the darkness being the cargo hold of a slave ship. Your city has fallen. Your family is most likely dead. You don’t know anyone around you, and some of them aren’t even human. Giving up would be so easy to do, but not for Arowyn Mason. Not after being raised in a military family with seven brothers. Every great story should begin with a plan. Aro’s was to escape and to survive.
Escape comes, but at a price. As they reach the shore, Aro and the other survivors learn that freedom doesn’t mean safety. The slavers want their property back and will do anything to get it. The party uses every ounce of their brute strength, a hearty helping of cunning, and even ancient magics to keep themselves alive. Sickness, danger, and even love surprise them at every turn. Dealing with danger becomes their way of life, but none of them ever considered that nothing can be quite as dangerous as a prophecy. Running turns into another race altogether as her world falls to pieces again and again.
This Young Adult Fantasy with adventure, light romance and a strong female lead is suitable for anyone 15+
Broken Prince by Jen Wylie
Book 2 of The Broken Ones
Fantasy novel
Sometimes, when you’re broken, you can heal on your own. Sometimes, you need the help of your friends, your family, and the people you love. Keeping those pieces together when the world seems intent on ripping you apart is the greatest challenge of all. Especially when the ones you love, the ones who hold you together, start falling apart themselves.
Arowyn and her family continue on their journey to return the Elven Prince, Shael, to his homeland before he fades and dies. A journey full of triumph and horror, love and sorrow, rips them apart with every fighting moment, and yet brings them together as a family. They don’t allow the prophecy to rule their lives. Some don’t believe, some don’t care. Prophecies aren’t written in stone. Events can change. People can change. They are only words. From besieged cites, to the elusive Were and wild Fey, nothing quite prepares them to face their deadliest of enemies, one they didn’t know existed.
Broken Prince is now here! Pick it up at an introductory price of 2.99, and if you haven’t read Book 1, Broken Aro, it’s on sale for 0.99!
…jolly. I hate the happiness, the laughter. Most of all…I hate elves!”
Princess Zyx, blinked and glanced down at her now elfin form. “Really. Is that so?” Brushing aside the blizzard of angry snowflakes assaulting her, she glared up at her father in disbelief and anger. “Burbleglax, I need you.”
The imp rushed forward, twitching anxiously.
The princess gestured to Claus. “Who is this man?”
With a startled blink, the imp stood taller and then regarded the raging man before them. Sharp eyes took in everything from the length of whiskers to the precise shade of eye color. “He is Claus…and yet… he is not.”
She nodded once, sharply. “As I suspected.” Raising her ukulele, she dashed forward and bashed the startled man she called Daddy over the head. The man dropped like a bag full of year old shortbread cookies. Her ample bosom heaving, she smiled and dropped her now smashed instrument.
“Well done, princess. But… now what?”
“Hmm. A very good point.” Her hands went to her hips and she tapped her foot as she stared at her father. “First we’ll tie him up, and then we will find my one true love!”
The imp sighed and tore the strings off the ukulele to use as make-shift rope. The princess was ever so dramatic. Hopefully she’d marry someone soon and settle down.
The elf turned to the android as the Assembly General approached. “I never thought I’d wish to have a lawyer present…
“Alive you say?” The lawyer stared at the engraving of Princess Zyx the android held up, clearly dumbfounded. The beautiful face looked up and smiled at him before sticking its tongue out. “But the Princess has been murdered.”
“No body was ever found. Her death was merely reported by witnesses.” The android looked at the portrait once more and gave it a shake. The princess bounced off the edges until he stopped and then glared at him furiously. “Curious.” He ran through his systems, searching for information on people being trapped, stored, or otherwise confined to engravings or portraits.
“The last to see her being Mrs. Snulgrithn, or Snolthrign Giatztarg as the case may be. The elf named her liar.”
“Yet this engraving was found in the elf’s possession,” the android pointed out, lights flicking wildly over its metal body as it formulated various scenarios.
“Our simple summons has become not so simple,” the lawyer muttered. Being a lawyer, this didn’t surprise him. Nothing in life was ever simple, and if it was… lawyers could make it complicated more quickly than a troll could bash your head in. He turned back to the security droid, who continued to attempt to subdue the troll entwined in its mechanical tentacles. As he watched, the troll jerked a massive arm free and proceeded to do just that…smashing the droid’s head deep into its metal body. The resulting electric shock lit the troll up like an overdecorated Christmas tree.
Both lawyer and android took a step back as fur fried and sparks flew. The troll, tough beast that it was, roared and struggled to free its massive hand.
“I suggest, considering the new information we have just discovered, that we leave the troll for now and focus instead on retrieving the elf,” the lawyer said, brushing a spark off his suit. “The murder case has possibly just become something much more serious.”
“Agreed.” The android beeped suddenly. “File 1746C. Efernact Spell Journal of 1232. Page 438.”
The lawyer sidestepped the smoking troll and marched quickly through the foundry in pursuit of the elf. “What of it?”
“The spell used on the princess, I believe. The blackest of black magic.”
The android stopped suddenly behind him and the lawyer turned. “Is that so?” The lawyer tensed, hand moving slowly toward the portfolio.
“According to the journal, this spell can not be cast by an elf.” Beeping again, warning lights flashed on and off. “It can only be cast… by a lawyer.”
What a wonderful and busy last few days! I’m so excited to announce my newest release. Of course wordpress was being difficult and not letting me sign in, so this post is a few days delays. ~grumble~
Getting Broken Aro finally out is such a great pleasure (and relief). It’s a while in coming, with some ups and downs and too many edits to count. Finally it is here and has a kick butt cover to boot. I couldn’t be happier!
Broken Aro is the first in a new series, The Broken Ones. It is a YA epic fantasy and was a great book to write. I hope you all enjoy the story and characters as much as I do. My current goal is to have the second book, Broken Prince, written by Christmas and published in the beginning of 2013.
If you pick up a copy do drop me a note and let me know what you thought!
This is a Short Story!
Ring Around the Rosie, a centuries old children’s song known by all. We all remember the song and dance, people telling us it was about the Great Plague…but what if the song was really a warning for something else?
Aaron is a normal boy fascinated with music. He loves playing his flute so much he doesn’t even mind lessons over summer break. When he meets a strange boy at the park who seems to be just as obsessed they spend summer days entertaining children in the parks woods. But friends often have secrets, music can be magical, and even the most innocent of children’s games can be more than they appear.
This story contains NO violence, foul language or sex.
But friends often have secrets, music can be magical, and even the most innocent of children’s games can be more than they appear.
“Weaving the magical into the mundane, making you rethink what you already know, and mesmerizing you from start to finish. Only three of the reasons why I love Jen Wylie’s stories.” – Sean Hayden, Author of the Demonkin Series.
“A chilling tale of friendship, music and magic.” – J.A. Campbell, Author of Doc, Vampire-Hunting Dog.
“Chilling, thrilling and pitch perfect, will you take Jennifer Wylie’s hand and be led into a supernatural game? It’s not all child’s-play in ‘Ring Around the Rosie’.” – Katy O’Dowd, Author of The Lady Astronomer.
Hi Everyone!
I blog about a lot of different things, but I realized I haven’t on my own writing too much lately. I thought I’d see if you’ve all checked out my young adult short story series, Tales of Ever.
This is a special project close to my heart. The series is geared toward getting people reading and so is written with a lot of action and is very fast paced to keep the reader hooked.
Though it is young adult and written for teens ages 12 and up, it has a number of adult loyal fans too!
So what’s it about you ask? The six part series features Misha, a teenage girl who is shy and not very social or popular. She learns she is a firestarter, like her mother and her father who mysteriously disappeared when she was six. Her life goes from sucky to horrible and through various circumstances she becomes banished to the mystical land of Ever. The stories follow her as she meets new friends and searches for her father while learning to use her powers to survive the magical, and deadly, prison she can never escape.
Stories 1-4 are now available in all eBook formats for 0.99 each. 5 & 6 will be coming soon!
These links will take you to my author page with book list on each site.
You can see my Tales of Ever page on my website for more information on the series and each story too! CLICK HERE
Want to try the series out? Comment here and a winner will be chosen to receive a free eBook of Tales of Ever #1 Banished! Open to everyone! One entry per person. Please leave your email or twitter id so I can contact you if you win!
THIS post has very little do with my physical writing ... but it does have to do with DRAGONS.
A few weeks ago we ventured to the ART GALLERY of NSW to see the latest reincarnation of the Entombed Warriors Exhibiton. Immediately I spied the box in the gift shop containing the pieces for this creature it was purchased - little realising that it would take a few weeks to finally assemble his being (only because the numbering on the instructions wasn't quite right).
But together he now is and proudly he rests, resplendent in his unpainted naturalness, along with other creatures of his kind on our display ledge!
I've no idea if anyone will be interested since I've badly neglected this blog for so long (writing fiction took precedence over reviewing it), but I'm actually not writing fanfiction any more. Since February I've been writing and researching (more the latter than the former at the moment) a genre-crossing novel (Science Fiction and Crime/Detection fiction) - ie. original fiction, with characters I've - well, I was going to say created, but that'd be an exaggeration because I don't feel like I've created them, it feels more like they've sprung, fully-formed, from my head, like Athena.
I'm world-building in a serious way - working out details about religion, politics, and society, as well as the geography of the main planet (so far there are four planets in my universe). There'll be elements of various genres in there besides SF and crime - the two main characters are police detectives, and the story's set in the 25th century.
The first third of the story must be completed by mid-July as I'm writing it for the scifibigbang over on Live Journal.
If anyone would be interested in reading it, let me know and I'll post a link once the story goes 'live'.
