1. paisley whales make ripples

The prompt for Illustration Friday this week was paisley. I’ve never really been a paisley person, but when I read the word for the week, I thought of a whale illustration I’d done a couple of years ago (probably because I’d just finished some paintings for the ripple project):

Happy Whale

Happy Whale

I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to do so I just started working. I made paisley-like swirls and filled the centers with fishies, sea turtles and jellyfish. Then a couple of happy accidents happened and I decided to create 2 paisley whales:

Paisley Whale #1

Paisley Whale #1 (Unhappy)

Paisley Whale #2 (Singing)

Paisley Whale #2 (Singing)

I’ve decided to donate digital prints of these three images to the ripple project. Click here for more info or to purchase these images. Each print is 3″ x 4″ and sells for $10. ALL PROCEEDS go to one of these two non-profit charities: The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies and The International Bird Rescue Research Center. The buyer donates directly to one of the charities, ensuring that all the money goes to the relief effort. They then send the email confirmation and the art is shipped out to them. The copyright notice is for the web only and won’t be on the prints, but they will be signed.

Note: There are still two paintings from my original series available for purchase here (the seagulls and the pelicans). Both paintings are 2.5″ x 3.5″ and are the actual paintings, not prints.

2. Illustration Friday: Three paisley bowls

I completely forgot that I played around with sketching this weekend while I was taking care of Stella, Kj and JB's sweet dog. (More on her Wednesday!)
I printed out different paisley patterns and willy-nilly cut them into bowl shapes. I found this large flower in a pile of stuff I bought at the artsy store there, and then I just drew in little zinnia type flowers.
It really is simple but I enjoyed the meditative flow. And Stella likes it ;)
Have a groovy week everyone!

3. New Person in Paisley

Hello, Andrew Finnie here. Thanks very much for letting me join the group. I followed Karen (stalker I am) whose (who's?) work I admire immensely - and when I saw the quality of the other work here I asked to join.

I do illustrations similar to the above image. My work is three d derived then photoshopped. With photoshop elements I aim to bash the CG image into something that looks more traditional. Sometimes I succceed, most often I fail.

My ultimate aim is to make a few books for intelligent kids. Almost graphic novels but not quite. I admire Cloudchaser kind of work - though the writing in the first volume at least is dribbling balderdash that might have been lifted from a third rate Cornflakes Pack, I would like to emulate the style of illustrations.
I also admire Shaun tan's work, The Arrival. - how he tells a complicated emotive story purely with the use of pencilled images.

Anyways, the aim of the above image is to illustrate the idea 'pailsey' - purely by the way of integrating the paisley design into a few elements of the image.

Any comments welcome.

I'm looking forward to this group being energetic and thoughtful and helpful. I believe what you get out of something is the equivalent of what you put into it.

By the way, I can't spell :)
