I never thought of it that way, but you bring up some great points. I’ve read several victorian novels, and they definitely are more reserved. You kind of have to read into every subtle detail, which I think works well with Kaoru Mori’s style of slowly unfolding information. I guess you could say this would fit less in a “manga” genre and more into a “victorian novel” genre, which may be hard for some fans who are more interested in the former storytelling elements. It’s really not your typical maid manga/anime. Emma is a much more guarded character, and you don’t really get to see much of her true self. For me that made it all the more meaningful when she finally breaks down and is selfish in her love. I could see how someone who isn’t used to those novels, or isn’t interested in them, might have a harder time with how guarded everything is. Specially in comparison to A Bride’s Story. Both main characters are very strong, but Emma is more stoic, and Amir is eager to share with others. They are very different characters and very different stories. Great review.
