Just a couple of quick notes before the weekend hits: The CW announced today that it would be giving early renewals to 11 of its programs including everything under its DC Comics slate: The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and iZombie. This is welcome, but unsurprising, news as those first three series are among the […]

Netflix has just released the first press images from its Jessica Jones original series. The followup to spring’s breakout hit Daredevil, Jessica Jones continues to darken the tone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After a tragedy ends her career as a superhero, the series sees Jones attempting to rebuild her life as a typical private eye– albeit one with superhuman strength, invulnerability, and the ability to fly.
The preview images showcase Krysten Ritter as Jones and Mike Colter as Luke Cage, another metahuman with indestructible skin. Hence his rather calm reaction to being on fire.

He’s out of the tiara and in our television subscription services, he’s LUKE CAGE!
Mike Colter has just been announced to co-star in A.K.A. Jessica Jones as the one-and-only Luke Cage! The actor will be making his debut on-screen as the hero in Marvel and Netflix’s aforementioned show alongside Krysten Ritter. Then Colter will move onto his own Luke Cage spin-off series. Jessica Jones is set to be thirteen episodes long, and it is scheduled for release sometime in 2015. The show is coming after Daredevil, which also recently announced Charlie Cox as the lead actor. Colter has played various roles in television with projects like The Good Wife, and The Following, and has been in various films such as Zero Dark Thirty.
Luke Cage has come a long ways from his original character design developed by Archie Goodwin and John Romita Sr. in 1972. The character is no longer sporting that tiara, afro, and yellow outfit from the original design. Luke Cage is one piece of the four Netflix shows which combined equal The Defenders. The Hollywood Reporter announced the news this morning.

Speaking of Marvel and diversity, in 2002, Marvel published a Cage mini written by Brian Azzarello with art by Richard Corben. It was rough, gritty and unforgettable.
However, on one page, Corben—known for his take-no-prisoners, wear-no-pants underground comics—drew Luke Cage au natural. Colorist Jose Villarubia played “Il Braghettone” to this particular incident, putting some shadows on Cage’s manhood. But a Spanish blog has revealed the unexpurgated scenes.
As usual the female toplessness was fine, but male frontal was a no no!
Happy to hear that Flash appealed to the crucial crucial 18-49 market. I’m over 49, so I don’t count, but ironically, I was around for the first appearances of all those cool villains. And that counts for me.
