1. Conference Book Fair Opportunity

This year the book fair we hold on Saturday June 9th at the conference, provides a new opportunity. Newbery Award winning author Kate DiCamillo will be signing books on June 10th, along with her Agent/Author Holly McGhee. Their books will be on sale on Saturday and Sunday, but having Kate sign on Sunday allows everyone more time with the other authors selling books on Saturday.

Some of those authors happen to be editors and agents. I have listed the books they will be signing at the bookfair, below. If you have a favorite book that you would like to have signed, please let me know and I will give the title to the bookstore and if you want to pre-pay, we will hold it for you.

See bottom of post for tips on how to make the most of your bookfair time.

On Sunday, Marshall Cavendish Children’s Books publisher Margery Cuyler and actress Robin Holly will judge children’s books produced by contestants on Donald Trump‘s reality television show, The Celebrity Apprentice.

Here’s more from the release: “In the episode, the star-studded cast featuring celebrities such as Gary Busey and La Toya Jackson will split into two teams and engage themselves in one of the most prominent niches in the book publishing industry – children’s literature. Both teams will author an original children’s picture book to help raise money for charity.”

In the past, Celebrity Apprentice contestants worked at Redbook magazine and Zappos.com comics, but this is the first time the show has featured children’s books. Will you watch it?

7. Un-Forgettable Friday: Princess Bess Gets Dressed by Margery Cuyler; Illustrated by Heather Maione

*Picture book for preschoolers through second graders
*Princess Bess as main character
Rating: Little girls who love princesses will love Princess Bess Gets Dressed, especially little girls who love princesses and underwear! :) (Now, I’ve peaked your interest, right?)

Short, short summary:

Princess Bess has a busy schedule. She has to dine on muffins with the queen, go to dance class, attend a joust, play chess, and much more. For each task or event, she has to change into a different outfit, of course, but she’s got a secret. She really likes to wear one thing best–and she doesn’t tell the reader what it is until the very end of the story. Well, and I’m not going to tell you either! :)

So, what do I do with this book?

1. This is a great book to practice prediction skills. In the beginning, Princess Bess tells readers that she has a secret about what she likes to wear best. But then she never gets to tell us because she is so busy. So ask students or family members to predict what her favorite outfit is. Write down predictions. Read the end of the book and see who is right.

2. Princess Bess Gets Dressed has a lot of fun rhymes. Ask children which pair of rhyming words is their favorite and then create your own sentences with these words. For example, one pair of rhyming words in the book is chess and dress. You could make up a sentence like: When I wear my blue dress, I like to play chess. Students will have fun making up new sentences with Margery Cuyler’s words as a starting point.

3. Ask students what their favorite clothes are to wear. Do they have a favorite shirt? Pajamas? Shoes? Send a note home to parents and ask them to bring in a photo of their children dressed in a favorite outfit. Children can paste or tape this photo to construction paper, write a sentence or two about their clothes, and decorate the paper for a unique wall display. If children forget photos, have a camera available, so you can take a picture of the student. You can easily do this activity at home with your children, too, if you home school.

8. Friday...That's Good! That's Bad!

I wanted to share one of my all time favorite children's books. This is one of the best children's books I've bought for my boys (and we have about a hundred). It's the perfect marriage of story and illustration by Margery Cuyler and David Catrow.

A little boy has a series of adventures and misadventures with a bunch of wild animals. His parents buy him a balloon at the zoo and suddenly he is lifted into the sky. "Oh, that's good. No, that's bad! '' because the balloon pops when it hits a tree deep in the jungle. What do you think happens? Next time your at the library or bookstore be sure to check it out because it's a super cute little adventure.

9. But I love you, EW!

Sadly, EW doesn't share the love; or, rather, some of it's writers don't.

From the review of the Beowulf DVD, written by Ken Tucker:

"Zemeckis says in a making-of that this film has 'nothing to do with the Beowulf you were forced to read in junior high - it's all about eating, drinking, killing, and fornicating.' To which I can only respond, Oh, you poor, deluded baby boomer: Bob, do you think young people in 2008 have an Old English epic poem on the syllabus? American literacy is lucky if junior high schoolers get a stray Hemingway short story into their diet of crappy young-adult novels."

Wow. What, does Tucker get paid for how many groups he can insult at one time?

Excuse me. I'm going back to reading some young-adult novels.
