1. Pet Robots but Don't Look Now Darth Maul

Hello all in the Land of Blog,

I have a very cool post for you today about two very cool Graphic Novels and a special Video from Darth Maul concerning ImaginOn's and Matthew's Joint Hip Happening Star Wars Summer Programs. Let the fun begin!!!!!!!

Pet Robots by Scott Sava and Diego Jordan - This is a very cool Graphic Novel about four kids that visit a toy factor and discover 4 awesome robots that they accidentally bond with. The four robots names and powers are: Wind - super speed, Rock - super strength, Aqua - water shooting powers and Skye - power of flight and super strength. Well unknown to the kids, the robots follow them home and they all become fast friends. The only problem is that the owner of the toy factor is an evil genius named Vandenburger Meisterburger. He made these robots to be used for not so nice purposes and he wants them back. That's when the fun begins!!!! This is an exciting and very funny Graphic Novel that I highly recommend!!!! Two Thumbs up!!!!!!

Don't Look Now by Ed Briant - This is a really cool mostly wordless Graphic Novel/Picture Book about two brothers whose pranks on each other and imaginations build to such a level that what is real and not real becomes very questionable. Not only does this book have Lions and Tigers and Bears oh my; but also dragons, Giant Snakes and Monsters of every shape and color. The art work is really awesome and the story hilarious (I actually found myself laughing out loud at times). If you want to get a little taste of this story and the great artwork check it out:

This is a friendly, but at first ferocious monster from the book who gets ice cream dumped on his head through the boys' actions. Luckily for the boys, he discovers he likes ice cream quite allot!!!!! Trust me on this one, give it a try and I promise you will not be disappointed!!!!! Three Monster Thumbs Up!!!!!

And now we have a special anouncement from Darth Maul concerning ImaginOn's and Matthew's ultra-cool Summer Star Wars Programs:

Well that's all for now Cowpokes. See ya on the flipside,

Bill

2. On The Road with Jay Piscopo and The Zen of Finding One's Way

Hi all,

Well Jay Piscopo was here in Charlotte last week, Monday and Tuesday, visiting different branches of the PLCMC Library System. I hope some of you reading this got the chance to see him, the Drawing Workshop he put on was awesome!!!!!!!! If you did miss him, he will be coming back down in June for Heroes Con (for more information on that click HERE). While he was here in addition to the Drawing Workshop he also talked about "The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli"and signed free Capt'n Eli Comics that he was so generous in giving to the guys and girls who attended his visits. I know for a fact that he is hard at work on the third Capt'n Eli GN and I can't wait till it comes out!!!! Here are some photos from his visit:

Jay drawing a character some of you might recognize?????????

Tada......The finished product Capt'n Eli!!!!!

Jay presenting his Drawing Workshop at ImaginOn.

Guys and Girls drawing at Jay's Workshop!!!

Jay signing comics and graphic novels after the Drawing Workshop!!!!!

Jay at the Airport getting ready to go back to Maine (oh that's my wife Val in the picture also)!!

A picture of me with my all time favorite Comic/Graphic Novel Writer/Artist Jay Piscopo!!!

Also as many of you know Jay won The Boys Rule Boys Read March Madness Author Shoot-Out (taking down such noteworthy talents as Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan and Jeff Smith). Well while he was down here visiting, Jedi Master Zack and myself presented him with a very special plaque (it was made of very, very high quality paper) for this accomplishment. Here is a video of the presentation and Jay's acceptance speech:

And Now For Something Completly Different:

Chasing Lincoln's Killer by James Swanson - This was a really great read (just goes to show as Carl says non-fiction books can be great). On April 14, 1865 while attending a play at Ford's Theater, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of The United States of America, was shot and mortally wounded by the actor and confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. Do you know the whole story of how one of America's greatest Presidents was assassinated and his killer hunted down? Did you know that John Wilkes Booth was part of a larger conspiracy to eliminate many important political leaders of The United States of America? Do you know where Booth and his fellow assassins fled and how they where eventually caught? This is a great book that will suck you in and having you turning page after page to see how all this happened and the repercussions of this tragic event. Two Thumbs Up!!!!!!!!

Ed's Terrestrials by Scott Sava and Diego Jourdan - This is a very funny Graphic Novel about a boy named Ed and some aliens he meets named Marcello, Al and Gus who have escaped from the Planet known as The Intergalactic Food Court (a planet that sells nothing but food for Space Travelers) on which they were slaves. He finds these aliens living in his Treehouse, which they have converted so they can help other aliens living on The Intergalactic Food Court escape. What Ed and his new friends don't know is that the most feared and ruthless Mall Cop in the galaxy, Maximus Obliterus, is hot on their trail with some help from Ed's classmate the rich, spoiled rotten Natalie (who has determined she wants to own at least one of Ed's new alien friends). This Graphic Novel was a fun read with excellent illustrations. It has definitely interested me into checking into more of these guys work.

One last thing I would like to mention before I say good day is that if you don't know, well I'm about to let you know. Know what you ask? Well that on Saturday, May 2 Heroes Aren't Hard To Find will be having its Free Comic Book Day!!!!!!! To find out more about this super event just click HERE!!!!!!

Finally if your wondering about the title to this blog, let's just say Darth Bill's sense of direction is not that great and Jay got to see a whole lot of Charlotte because Bill took a wrong turn somewhere along the way to our destinations. But I feel we are all better people for it (really).

Well until next time all,

Bill "Lt. Y"

3. Of Summer, Comics, Good Times and Great Reads

Hi guys,
Man, summer is here and things are loony here at the library (busy, busy, busy)!!!!! "This Sith, methinks, has misplaced his mind!!!!!!!!!" he says out loud to no one in particular. Take a look at these before summer and during summer pictures of me working at the library.

<-------Before

After------->

Okay, enough of this nonsense!!!!!!! As some of you may or may not know, we had this really cool program at the library called "Kids Love Comics! Workshop for Aspiring Artists & Young Fans." on June 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Basically, we had some very cool guys who work on comics and graphic novels do a how-to-create-your-own-comics program. They also talked about the books they work on, answered any type of questions, and talked about comics and graphic novels. Everyone who attended got a free comic in which most of these guys' work appeared. Also, after the program, the guys hung around to talk to attendees and sign comics and graphic novels. Man, I really had a blast and I know everyone who attended had a good time too!!!!!! The guys who basically did the program for free were:

John Gallagher front and center who works on such comics as NASCAR Heroes, Buzzboy & Roboy Red.

Rich Faber (middle) with John Gallagher and Jimmy Dash (NASCAR Heroes) who also works on Roboy Red, NASCAR Heroes and Buzzboy.

Josh Elder(right) with Rich and Jimmy Dash whose work includes Mail Order Ninja and The Batman Strikes.

Harold Buchholz (left) with Rich and John who works on Acredale Kolor Komics Kollection.

I am very sorry to report that, because I ran out of room for pictures on the digital camera, I was not able to get a picture of Scott Sava in action at the event. He really did an awesome job and I found him to be an extremely talented and nice guy. Some of the books he makes are The Dreamland Chronicles, Pet Robots and Ed's Terrestrials.

Jay Piscopo (middle) with Rich and Jimmy Dash who works on The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli.

These guys really did an awesome job and so did everyone who attended. A terrific time was had by all!!!!! Check it out:

Well, to complete my post, I'm going to give you the skinny on some really excellent graphic novels I have read recently:

Transformers Animated, Volume 1 adapted by Zachary Rau - I don't know about you guys, but I love the Transformers!!!!! Well, this is the first graphic novel in a series about them and how they came to be on planet Earth. The Autobots (the good guys) are Optimus Prime (mechanized form - Fire Truck), Bulkhead (mechanized form - S.W.A.T. Assault Cruiser), Ratchet (mechanized form - Ambulance), Bumblebee (mechanized form - Undercover Police Cruiser) and Prowl (mechanized form - Motorcycle). The Autobots' evil adversaries are the Decepticons. Some of the Decepticons are Megatron and Starscream (mechanized form - Jet Fighter). This first volume sets the stage for how the Autobots and Decepticons reach Earth and what they are fighting over the Allspark. This is a cool graphic novel with great characters and action-packed adventure.

Warriors: Warrior's Return, Volume 3 created by Erin Hunter, written by Dan Jolly and art by James Barry - This is the concluding volume in the story of Graystripe's search to find his clan with Millie accompanying him. As they continue their adventure and journey to find where the cat clans have relocated or even if they still exist, Graystripe grows angrier as he sees what the twolegs have done to his former home and the way he is treated by them in general. Greystripe despairs that they may have even destroyed all the cat clans. Millie keeps his hopes up and insists that they continue forward on their journey, no matter what, to find what has become of the clans. This graphic novel can be read alone but if you can get your hands on the first two volumes (The Lost Warrior and Warriors Refuge), which the library carries, I highly recommend reading the entire trilogy. This is very good stuff!!!!!

Marvel Adventures Avengers: The Dream Team, Volume 4 by Jeff Parker & Leonard Kirk - If you want to read about a team of superheroes that kicks butt; well, my friend, look no further!!!!! The Avengers are made up of Marvel Comic's biggest and best heroes. The Avenger are Storm, Iron Man, Giant-Girl, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Wolverine and Captian America. This graphic novel collects Marvel Adventures the Avengers #13 - 15 and Giant-Size Marvel Adventures the Avengers #1. In this volume we get to see the mighty Avengers team up with Thor, one of my favorite Marvel heroes, in Asgard. It seems trouble is brewing for Thor and his fellow Asgardians in the form of Malekith and his fellow dark elves who have joined with the Frost Giants to destroy Asgard and all the gods who reside there. Will the Avengers be able to turn the tide in this battle of epic preportions? And this is just one of the four stories in this volume. Read this graphic novel for guarenteed thrills and excitement.

Well guys, I think I said a mouthfull. So until next time, peace,

Bill
