Even in the heat of summer, when the pavement sizzles and the sidewalk buckles, a writer can feel like she’s trying to break through the ice to find the words to tell her story.
At times it can feel as if our words are trapped beneath the surface, frozen like fish caught in the ice while swimming upstream, irretrievable until the next thaw.
How can a writer break the ice?

I turn to my daughter when this happens. When I can't stand looking at the wrong word for another minute. When I think I'll implode if I can't find the 'real' word.<br /><br />She looks at it. For about two seconds. Then tells me what she thinks I should use instead.<br /><br />Nine times out of ten - she's right on. What a blessing!
