1. Do you want to LET THE SKY FALL???? (Hint: there's a giveaway!)

Okay--don't go into shock, but I AM ACTUALLY POSTING ON MY BLOG. (I know, I know--I said don't go into shock!)

Sadly, this does not mean I'm out of the deadline cave. I'm still very much trapped in that dark, stressful place for at least another few weeks. But the good news is: I snuck out into the light because I have something SUPER AWESOME to share with you guys--and a contest too! (so you'll want to stick with me to the end of this post)

See, I don't know if you realize this, but LET THE SKY FALL is launching into the world in LESS THAN 100 DAYS!!!!

I know to some of you that might sound very far away--but trust me, that is SOON. Like holy crap, there aren't enough exclamation marks in the world to convey how soon that is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I'd been planning to commemorate the impending countdown to LTSF's launch with a panicky, exclamation mark filled post (hey, kinda like this one) wherein I stressed about ALL THE THINGS.

Fortunately though, the lovely people at S&S had something MUCH more awesome planned (this is why authors shouldn't be in charge of these things). And so, I give you: THE MOST SHINY AWESOME COUNTDOWN WIDGET I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure you click the play button in the top right--THERE ARE WIND SOUND FX!!!!
(and if, for some reason, that isn't loading right on your screen, you can also find it HERE)

Equally exciting--or maybe even MORE SO--is that S&S has also built a super-awesome microsite for LET THE SKY FALL, which they will be adding all kinds of cool things to in the months to come. And to start off the fun, they have the first four chapters online for you to read. Click HERE to check that out.

And of course this wouldn't be a proper celebration without a contest. SO I'M ALSO GIVING AWAY AN ARC OF LET THE SKY FALL!!!!!!!!!!

I want to make this really nice and easy for everyone (especially myself, given the whole DROWNING IN DEADLINES thing). So to enter all you have to do is leave a comment on this post by 11:59 pm pacific time on Saturday, December 8th. I'll draw one random winner and post their name on Sunday, December 9th. That's it--that's all you have to do. And international entries are welcome.

HOWEVER, I know some of you might wish there were a way to increase your chances of winning. So I will also give FIVE extra entries to anyone who posts the widget on their blog. I don't need a link--if you say you did it I trust you. But make sure you let me know that you did so I can give you your extra entries.

Ready?

Set?

GO!!!!!!!

And I have a feeling I'm going to be saying this a lot over the next couple weeks (get ready for it) but... I just want to say a big giant sparkly THANK YOU to all of you for all the love and support.

 thank-you Glitter graphics
Myspace Hi5 comments

(Say it with me: Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww)

I won't ever be able to fully explain how much I appreciate all of the amazing things you guys are doing to support me, whether it be blogging / tweeting about KEEPER, emailing me your thoughts, posting reviews, telling your friends, pre-ordering, coming to my events, or simply just stopping by to cheer me on. ALL of that means SO MUCH. You have no idea.

This debuting thing is super scary, but all of the love and support you guys keep giving is making it so much less stressful. So THANK YOU. I would be a puddle of panic without you! (hows that for a lovely mental image to end on? Maybe scroll back up and look at the cuddly bear)

3. KEEPER Launch Party Details!

Yes--the time has finally come for me to freak out tell you about some of the exciting things I have planned for the release of KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES. Specifically the terrifying Launch Parties!

And yes--I mean parties plural. I figured, I was already worrying that no one would come to one launch party, so why not double the stress????? :)

No, really, what it came down to is that there's one Indie Book Store that not only holds a very special place in my heart, but is a large part of the reason KEEPER exists. So I couldn't imagine not doing my launch there. BUT, when I started telling SoCal friends and family that the launch would be in Arizona, well... lets just say they were less than happy with me (I'm now very glad I didn't have a destination wedding--it would not have gone over well).

SO, I'm doing TWO launches in TWO different states in ONE action packed week---and then probably collapsing or fleeing to Mexico.  Should be good times!

Here are the details for both events:

SoCal Launch Party
When: Tuesday, October 2
Time: 6:30 pm
Where: Barnes & Noble Oceanside
2615 Vista WayOceanside,
CA 92054
760-529-0106

Changing Hands Launch Party
When: Saturday, October 6
Time: 5:00 pm
Where: Changing Hands Bookstore
6428 S McClintock DrTempe,
AZ 85283
480-730-0205

I really hope some of you guys can come. In fact, I will love you forever. Like, SERIOUSLY. You have no idea how many sleepless nights I've had about this:

SO, if you live in or near any of those areas I am begging hoping you'll decide to make me the happiest person ever (seriously, EVER) and come hang out.

There will be rambling! And nervous giggling! And awkward moments where I can't decide if I should hug or handshake so we do that sort of clumsy half step-dancy thing!

Who DOESN'T want to be there for all of that????????

And since I am not above bribing you because I love you guys, there will also be exclusive swag and prizes! (Some pretty awesome things, if I do say so myself.) I'm also working on getting food and other yummy things. I'm not sure what the stores will allow, but I'll do what I can to have a few treats.

So mark those calendars! I'll update with any additional details as I figure them out and do my best to remind you guys (warning: I will probably be a bit obnoxious about this--I am SO SCARED no one will come). You can also find info on all my upcoming events on my Appearances Page.

Hope to see some of you there!

4. So... this is awkward...

So... I don't know if you guys know this, but... a couple of weeks ago, THIS happened:

GIANT TOWERS of KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES ARCs were given away at BEA--along with a small batch of LET THE SKY FALL ARCs. And even more KEEPER ARCs will go out this weekend at ALA. And then the special mailings will begin...

All of which is SUPER exciting.

But it's also... awkward. Really awkward. Because all those books are Advance READER/REVIEWER Copies. And reviews put me in a rather sticky situation.

See ... here's the thing:

I DON'T expect everyone to love my books the way I do. I get it that some people won't like them--or that some will think they're good-not-great and give them mid-level rankings--or that even in a favorable review they might point out small quibbles with things in the interests of being fair. It's the nature of this business and I totally, totally get it.

HOWEVER ...

I'm not sure I want to SEE the negative reviews.

Especially since I kinda sorta *know* some of you--and while I would NEVER (seriously, NEVER) expect all of you to 5-Star my books if that's not genuinely how you feel about them, it might be a *little* awkward knowing what you really think. Seems like ignorance might be bliss in that area, yanno?

5. The Challenges of Self Promotion

I've had this post percolating for a long time, trying to figure out how to say what I want to say. And I'm still not sure I've figured it out, but I'm giving it a try.*

This publishing thing is ... a crazy business. Awesome and amazing and many other incredible things. But it's crazy too. For so many reasons. Deadlines. Pressure. The fact that you are putting something deeply personal to you out in the world for all to see and judge, knowing some of them won't like it. (and that many of them will express that dislike in very public places, flogging you for all the world to see. YAY REVIEWS!)

But I guess the weirdest part--for me at least--is that you're also putting YOU out there. Especially if you're active online. Then you are putting yourself on blogs, facebook, twitter, tumblr, pinterest, insert-other-social-networking-trend here and saying, "Here I am world, judge me!" And THAT is a crazy, crazy thing. Especially because so many of the people I'm interacting with online are my peers.

See... here's the thing about peers. Whether we've yet to sell a book or we've sold twenty, we're all writers. And we're all watching each other, seeing what we're doing, and we can't help seeing things from the standpoint of ... would I do that? Would I say that? Would I blog about that? Would I want my book deal announced that way? Would I RT that? Would I tell that story?

And naturally, a lot of times, the answer is, "No."

We're all different people. We all have different things we are and aren't comfortable with. So... we're all going to have different ways of handling things. ESPECIALLY when it comes to self promotion.

Oh, self promotion.

The words alone make me want to move to a wi-fi free cabin and curl up in a little ball for the next year while my books launch into the world. It is a big, mucky, icky gray area where EVERYONE has their own opinion on what is and isn't acceptable. There. are. no. rules. Except that it's pretty much a guarantee that SOMEONE will be bothered by SOMETHING you do. In fact, I'm sure it's already happened to me. I'm sure I've done or said something or not said or not done something or just... I don't know, the way I'm smiling in my author photo has rubbed someone the wrong way. Probably more than a few someones.

And that's okay. Personalities clash. Misunderstandings occur. Whatever. It happens. And it will keep happening.

But I guess what I'm trying to say--after all of this rambling--is mostly... I KNOW I'm going to make mistakes as I muddle through this crazy year. I'm SURE I've already made some. But... I still need to do it. I still have to talk about my books sometimes. And me. And share good news. I'm going to try and balance it the best way I can. But I'm sure some of you will probably think...  I wouldn't have done that--and you may even be right.

But... maybe some of you will enjoy sitting back and watching the last threads of my sanity unravel. Hey--maybe even a few of you will find it fun.

Whichever category you fall into, I hope you'll try to remember that I really am doing my best. I don't know what I'm doing and I'm not perfect so yeah... there will probably be faux pas. But I really hope that you'll bear with me anyway. Hey--if nothing else, there will most likely be a whole lotta Shannon Shame going on too. And prizes.  I AM NOT ABOVE BRIBING YOU TO LIKE ME!**

And hey, if you have any tips or pointers or DO NOT DO THIS pieces of advice, feel free to share in the comments. I can definitely use all the help I can get.

*please note: this post was not inspired by any particular or specific INCIDENT. Just something that's been on my mind pretty much from the moment I accepted S&S's offer and I realized I would have to self promote.

6. This is my life right now...

I could write a post trying to explain the insanity of what I'm currently juggling--but I think this picture pretty much sums it up. This is my desk at the moment ...

And yes--the cat is typically there. It's why I'm not often able to WORK at my desk, and instead use it simply as The Place To Keep All The Important Things!

So basically, what you're seeing (in addition to my P&P desktop--hee) is three things with three very tight deadlines.

That pile on the left? Yeah, that's KEEPER 1st pass, which is due VERY soon.

That pile in the middle? Copyedits for LET THE SKY FALL. Due EVEN SOONER.

Oh, and that chaos to the right? That's all my brainstorming notes for KEEPER book 2, which is ALSO due very SCARILY SOOON.

(There's also some other *fun* stuff on there you might be noticing...)

So... yeah. That is my life right now. Deadline upon deadline upon deadline. Now I know why my agent had a very serious conversation with me about "can I really handle this?" when we sold the second series. It is INTENSE.

But I am not complaining--AT ALL. I could not be happier or prouder to get to work on my books every day. It is truly an honor and I would not change it for a second. BUT, if I'm not blogging or tweeting or commenting on FB or replying to your emails (FYI guys, I'm about 2 months behind on email. My inbox has 464 unread messages. So if you are waiting to hear from me--that is why, and it's probably gonna be a while. SORRY!)

One of these days I WILL catch up. One stack of papers at a time. One day at a time. Until it's all finally done. In the meantime--you know where to find me!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! I... will be working. (Well, mostly. I have an AWESOME author event on Sat night I will try to post pics from. But yeah... my deadlines demand the rest of my time)
