Charlotte Brevik knows how to make a girl feel at home. The retired-nurse/sheriff’s wife fills Lola Wicks with chicken and dumplings swamped in peppery gravy, homemade bread, and creamy casserole of butterbeans she grew and canned herself. A hearty meal to warm a soul in a brutal climate, especially when that soul was just beaten up and left for dead in a snow-covered bar parking lot.
Not that said beating was enough to deter news reporter Lola from pursuing her story; before winding up at the Breviks’ for recovery fuel, Lola takes the time to throw back some tequila and question the guy (Ralph) who pulled her out of the snow about the recent string of vanished girls.
Now, don’t be thinking this Ralph is some sort of knight-in-shining-armor love interest for Lola; despite Lola’s condition and the circumstances that makes their paths cross that night, he still tries to cop a feel at the bar. And he’s actually quite far down the list of local creeps if we were to rank them on offensiveness! Yup, between the strip clubs and the man camp, Lola will need many more home-cooked dinners to sustain her through this investigation. ;)

One of the 2009 Kind Children's Book Awardswent to a special book by Jan Zita Grover, about a special little dog named Dakota. Her name hadn't always been Dakota. For years she was known only as Dog No. 241. Her rescue into a foster home marks a healing transformation that not only gives Dakota a new chance at life, as she slowly learns the joys of joining a true family, especially Sweetie, a girl on her own healing journey.
Children and adults interested in helping rescue these innocent creatures from puppy mills can contact Mission: Humanewhich gets young people actively involved in animal protection and provides resources for classroom teachers, animal sheltering professionals, and others to guide youth animal protection clubs.
The program provides projects for elementary-school students and teens, resources for forming clubs and taking action, and rewards for activities. Projects are designed to get young people working on the most important issues affecting animals today.
I also got a reminder from life-long friend, Cynthia, who has spent many years rescuing and adopting Golden Retrievers in the Atlanta area, who sent out an e-mail from Adopt A Golden Atlanta with a list of dogs in desperate need of rescue. As you probably know, I'm passionate about pet adoption and rescue. Our Molly Girl adopted us straight out of the Miami Animal Shelter fourteen years ago. She's romping around in Heaven now with her "brothers" Sam and Wilbur, so this story is in her memory and honor.

This is a wonderful post on such an important and all-too-often overlooked topic, or one that many people would rather not take too close a look at. There are so many homeless animals, and with more public awareness this situation can be improved and the numbers reduced!

Love to read your posts about adopting our four-footed best friends. We had three Goldens over the years and that photo really tugged at my heartstrings. Unfortunately, we live on the Left Coast, but I'm sure there are local centers which specialize in rescuing that wonderful breed. You're such a champion for animals and I'm sure your Molly Girl is looking down from doggy heaven and barking with pride!
It's like good news central here. My brother heard this morning that he had won tickets to see the Sterephonics in London and to meet them at a party later. I don't have the full details as he has gone racing off to London as the party is today. Here is my favourite Stereophonics song.
For him it's the equivalent of my getting a phone call from Tim Burton saying he wants to make The Poisoned Apple into an animated musical, and the same day Jack Bauer bursts into the reception at work and saves me from a paper cut.
My good news - I won £10 on the Lottery. YAY! Cate sits down and realises her news isn't quite as cool. Better news, Gustavo Bondoni has blogged about the cover of the Return to Luna anthology. Once again congratulations to all those who made it into the antho, I am forever jealous.

Money is always good. I don't worry too much about concerts anymore, not even bands I like when I realize that I am a) either older than the band itself or b) am just about the oldest person in the crowd.

(Dakota is a rad track. I can't even pick a favorite, though I'll always retain a special love for "Traffic", since it was the first one I ever heard. Ahh, rock nostalgia... "She got a body in the boot, or just bags full of food?")
Congrats on winning £10 on the Lottery! I won that same amount a few weeks ago. And I am convinced they allow me to win a tenner every year to ensure I keep buying their tickets. ;)
