8. 'Grow'vember day 16 - imaginary flora

sketchbook drawings of strange imaginary trees and plants
Day 16
Topic - imaginary flora

I had in mind strange fanciful trees for today's topic, but without including any clues to scale I guess they could just as easily be small plants.

12. Happy Halloween!

As an illustrator known for chubby mice and tea drinking kitties it can be tough to find something to post for Halloween. I did however remember this last minute addition to a delivery on a film project. The film was never made but some of the art looked pretty cool and I will post some of it in the coming weeks. This sketch was created in the minutes before the meeting, and as it goes with these things, they loved it. Hope you do as well.

13. Theo Prins is a freelance concept artist out of Washington...

Theo Prins is a freelance concept artist out of Washington State. What I love about his work is his unabashed use of pastels (a color choice not usually associated with concept art) and his beautiful compositions of otherworldly shipyards, sparse landscapes, and flying boats.  You can view more of his work at his website and blog, though I initially found him through deviant art.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."- Robert Laurence Binyon

17. CTNEXPO 2010

Its official! I will be in Burbank again this year for the CTNEXPO conference.
I have been asked to be part of a panel.
Animation Designers Who Illustrate and Vice Versa

Are you an illustrator and have been wondering if you should take your skill set into the world of animation design. Or maybe you are an animator or animation artist and have been wondering if you should take your skill set into the world of Children’s Book Illustration or art. What are the similarities and differences that these top artists who work both in animation and book illustration go through to create and stories visually.

Pretty cool. The panel will be moderated by the incredibly talented Carol Kieffer Police. Sitting on the panel are; Brain Ajar, Chris Appelhans, and myself. These folks are amazing so click on their names to check out their work or read about the discussion by clicking on this link;

18. Hungry homeless guy

The topmost image is the closest so far to what I think I want the look of the book to be, however the composition was simplified. The images below it are earlier experiments, one showing an idea for the full composition. I first posted about this project here if you want to see more.

20. scene from Hunchback

Extracted from Notre-Dame de Paris, Claude Frollo is interrogating Pierre Gringoire about his relationship with Esmeralda,

"Dom Claude had been listening in silence. Suddenly his deep-set eyes took on an expression so shrewd and penetrating that Gringoire felt them probe him to the very depths of his soul.."

This was only meant to be a preparatory study for a more finished illustration. You can still see my rough under-sketch in red if you look not so closely..

I wanted Frollo to look a bit scary - his lanky body protruding out from the shadows - while retaining some humour regarding his insecurity.

(Apologies for the watermarks, but it's either that or lower res images!)

21. Claude Frollo II

Another character concept for Claude Frollo the archdeacon. I'm trying here to find the personality and degree of caricature that I feel is right.

22. Illustration - Wolf Child

As many of my visitors are no doubt aware, there have over the ages been numerous stories and myths about children raised in the wild by animals. I thought it would be an interesting theme to explore. It raises all kinds of questions about things like nature vs nurture, our 'humanness' and so on. In this image I wanted to depict a really wild child - one in which many of the traits we consider to be marks humanity are absent. I was going to include wolves in the image, however the extra elements were more than I wanted to take on for now. In this image I have the androgynous child perched on top of a mossy rock in what could be a drinking hole.
