Did you see the SCBWI Bulletin that came out this month? Our own Leeza Hernandez did the cover and had a double spread article inside about her. Don’t miss taking a look. Leeza is the New Jersey SCBWI Chapter’s Illustrator Coordinator and the Art Director of Sprouts Magazine. She will be doing an Illustrator Workshop on Perspective at our free Craft Day on November 5th.
Nanci Steveson received a nice letter from Writer’s Digest on Friday. She had entered the 80th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition in the Genre Short Story Contest and took 40th place for her story SILENT NIGHTS out of 11,800 entries. She didn’t win any money, but the First Place manuscript in each category, and the names of the top 100 winners in each category will be printed in a special competition collection coming out in December. She will also receive a Certificate of Achievement from Writer’s Digest. Congratulation Nanci! Sometimes it is nice to be recognized for all the hard work that goes into being a writer.

You bet I saw Leeza’s artwork! In fact, I believe it was through the SCBWI newsletter that I first saw it before the bulletins were actually released. I got SO excited ’cause I knew it was Leeza’s monsters right away

And congrats to Nanci!!!!! It’s a great feeling to be on that “Honorable Mention” list (for those who don’t know, it’s a list of the top 100 that weren’t actual “prize” winners). To me it says you’re “doing something right!” But we already knew that with you landing the agent you did
Actually, the same thing happened to me. In fact, this made me go upstairs to find the book and certificate ’cause I couldn’t remember ANY details lol. For me it was four years ago in the 76th contest, only I was # 91 on the “Genre” list. That year over 19,000 entered; at least that’s what the letter said when they sent the certificate, though I’m not sure that total includes just the Genre entries or all ten categories. I’m curious now and was curious then lol It’s making me wonder what that says about the industry with such a drop in overall entries *scratches head* Regardless, it’s an honor to be enjoyed and proud of, Nanci
