1. York woman wins debut novel prize

A 27-year-old author from York has won independent publisher Route's competition to find a debut novelist.

Sophie Coulombeau's novel, provisionally titled Rites, will be published by Route next summer. The competition, supported by Arts Council England, was aimed at aspiring authors aged between 18-30 and living in Yorkshire.

2. Arts Council library report "a disappointment"

Library campaigners have expressed intense disappointment with the Arts Council’s first strategy document on libraries. with one claiming it is not "devised to meet people's needs".

3. Poet Laureate calls for Palmer to be reinstated

Members of the Poetry Society, including poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, have started a petition to reinstate Judith Palmer as director of the embattled society in hope of a "new start".

The petition follows the departure of Poetry Society director Judith Palmer, president Jo Shapcott and vice-president Gwyneth Lewis and others, and an extraordinary general meeting earlier this month at which the society's board of trustees also agreed to stand down.
