1. Midsummer’s Eve Giveaway Hop - US ends 6/30

Midsummer’s Eve Giveaway Hop
June 21st to 30th

Hello again, book fans! Thanks to I am a Reader for another great giveaway hop. Make sure you hit the links at the end of the post (most bloggers will post their giveaway on Saturday, I'm just a little early) to enter to win more great books and prizes.

Today I'm giving away what is so far my favorite middle grade book of the year -- The Secret Hum of a Daisy by Tracy Holczer! I haven't posted a review yet, since I chose it for my YABC (book club) pick and the first rule of book club is that you don't talk about the book before the meeting :) I will probably post a review on Amazon and link it since my clubmates don't really read my reviews there. But suffice to say for now that it's a phenomenal book, and I hope it wins many awards in the year to come! The giveaway is open to US only (ends 6/30) because I have to mail something breakable to the winner, but more on that later.

About the book

Twelve-year-old Grace and her mother have always been their own family, traveling from place to place like gypsies. But Grace wants to finally have a home all their own. Just when she thinks she's found it her mother says it's time to move again. Grace summons the courage to tell her mother how she really feels and will always regret that her last words to her were angry ones.

After her mother's sudden death, Grace is forced to live with a grandmother she's never met. She can't imagine her mother would want her to stay with this stranger. Then Grace finds clues in a mysterious treasure hunt, just like the ones her mother used to send her on. Maybe it is her mother, showing her the way to her true home.

Lyrical, poignant and fresh, The Secret Hum of a Daisy is a beautifully told middle grade tale with a great deal of heart.

About the author

Tracy Holczer lives in Southern California with her husband, three daughters, and two rather fluffy dogs named Buster and Molly. She has a deep love for the mountains where she grew up so she writes them into her stories.

A 2014 ABA Indies Introduce New Voices pick, her debut middle grade, The Secret Hum of a Daisy, was written in praise of both nature and family, and all that can be found if you're willing to hunt for treasure. It will be also be published by Konigskinder/Carlsen in Germany, fall 2015.

2. Hoppy Easter Eggstravaganza Giveaway Hop - Intl ends 4/24

4th Annual Hoppy Easter Eggstravaganza Giveaway Hop

April 17th to 24th

Hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer & Read Now Sleep Later

Thanks to Kathy for letting me co-host this one again! I hope you enter all of the great giveaways on the linky. Here's ours!

1 lucky winner (any country) will win a copy of The 57 Lives of Alex Wayfare by M. G. Buehrlen! I recently read and loved this book, though I haven't written a review yet. I will post it soon! In the meantime, use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter to win. None of the entries are mandatory, but you must do at least one of them to enter!

Publisher's description:
For as long as 17-year-old Alex Wayfare can remember, she has had visions of the past. Visions that make her feel like she’s really on a ship bound for America, living in Jamestown during the Starving Time, or riding the original Ferris wheel at the World’s Fair.

But these brushes with history pull her from her daily life without warning, sometimes leaving her with strange lasting effects and wounds she can’t explain. Trying to excuse away the aftereffects has booked her more time in the principal’s office than in any of her classes and a permanent place at the bottom of the social hierarchy. Alex is desperate to find out what her visions mean and get rid of them.

It isn’t until she meets Porter, a stranger who knows more than should be possible about her, that she learns the truth: Her visions aren’t really visions. Alex is a Descender – capable of traveling back in time by accessing Limbo, the space between Life and Afterlife. Alex is one soul with fifty-six past lives, fifty-six histories.

Fifty-six lifetimes to explore: the prospect is irresistible to Alex, especially when the same mysterious boy with soulful blue eyes keeps showing up in each of them. But the more she descends, the more it becomes apparent that someone doesn’t want Alex to travel again. Ever.

And will stop at nothing to make this life her last.

Giveaway Rules:
  1. Open internationally.
  2. We are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.
  3. One set of entries per household please.
  4. If you are under 13, please get a parent or guardian's permission to enter, as you will be sharing personal info such as an email address.
  5. Winner will be chosen randomly via Rafflecopter widget a day or two after the contest ends.
  6. Winner will have 48 hours to respond to to the email, otherwise we will pick a new winner.
  7. If you have any questions, feel free to email us. You can review our full contest policy here.

4. Children's Book Week Giveaway Hop (INTL ends 3/19)

Children's Book Week Giveaway Hop is hosted by Alyson from Kid Lit Frenzy with Kathy from I Am A Reader, Not A Writer, and Ella from Mymcbooks

What is Children's Book Week?

Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running literacy initiative in the country. Each year, books for young people and the joy of reading are feted for a full week with author and illustrator appearances, storytelling, parties, and other book-related events at schools, libraries, bookstores, museums, and homes from coast to coast!

The theme for this year's Children's Book Week is "books can take you anywhere". I remember my grandpa buying me the first non-picture books that really jump-started my imagination: Robinson Crusoe,  Treasure Island, Swiss Family Robinson (hey, what was with the stranded on desert island motif? I may never know), Heidi, Little Women. I lived in a pretty modern but still third-world city on an island, and none of these books had anything to do with that. It's what I loved so much about them! They transported me to times and places I had never been and might never be. I hope you take this week to show a young person in your life how books can take you to worlds far away as well as help you journey into your own soul.

For our giveaway, you can win a picture, juvenile fiction, middle grade, or young adult book of your choice worth up to $15 from bookdepository.com. Good luck, and make sure you hit up all the other awesome blog giveaways!

Giveaway Rules:
  1. Open internationally.
  2. We are not responsible for items lost in the mail.
  3. One set of entries per household, please.
  4. If you are under 13, please get a parent or guardian's permission to enter, as you will be sharing personal info such as an email address.

6. Young Adult Paranormal Giveaway Hop (US ends 2/27)

Young Adult Paranormal Giveaway Hop
February 21st - 27th

Featuring young adult books with paranormal elements

Today we are giving away Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger.

From Goodreads:

It's one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It's quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to Finishing School.

Sophronia Temminnick at 14 is a great trial more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners -- and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Her poor mother, desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady, enrolls the lively tomboy in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But young ladies learn to finish...everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage -- in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year's education.

9. Indie Author Giveaway Hop (INTL)

Hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer & Krazy Book Lady

Today you can win a copy of indie author Tammy Blackwell's book, Destiny Binds (Timber Wolves, Book 1). OR if you have already read Destiny Binds, you can have Time Mends (Timber Wolves, Book 2) instead.

Why did I pick Tammy Blackwell and her books to feature for the Indie Author Giveaway Hop?
  • She's a librarian.

  • Look at those covers. There are some "real" publishers whose covers aren't as good as these!
Seriously, even if you don't win my giveaway, if you love YA paranormal romance (and laughter) you should give these a go. The third book is due out later this year! You can find out more about Tammy at her blog, www.misstammywrites.com.

Remember to check out all the other great blogs on this hop for more chances to win!

13. Spring Fling Giveaway Hop (INTL)

Today's giveaway is for Saundra Mitchell's The Springsweet!

From Goodreads:

Heartbroken over the tragic death of her fiancé, seventeen-year-old Zora Stewart leaves Baltimore for the frontier town of West Glory, Oklahoma, to help her young widowed aunt keep her homestead going. There she discovers that she possesses the astonishing ability to sense water under the parched earth. When her aunt hires her out as a "springsweet” to advise other settlers where to dig their wells, Zora feels the burden of holding the key to something so essential to survival in this unforgiving land. Even more, she finds herself longing for love the way the prairie thirsts for water. Maybe, in the wildness of the territories, Zora can finally move beyond simply surviving and start living.

14. Fairy Tale Giveaway Hop (Intl)

My favorite fairytale right now is The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and my favorite character is the (often nameless) Prince. In some of the older variants he is "the old soldier". The story is about a dozen dancing princesses who are driving their father into penury by constantly wearing out a dozen pairs of shoes every night, to the point where the King has no choice but to lock them up in their bedroom at day's end. Still they somehow are able to wear out their shoes every evening. He offers the hand of any of his princesses to the man who figures out how they are doing this.

The old soldier or prince character, through a mixture of luck and cunning, is able to figure out that every night the girls disappear through a trap door which takes them to a Fairy Ball. They dance the night away and return worn out (shoes, too!) every morning. I love this fairytale even though it seems a bit senseless and without a lesson, because it gives other storytellers free license to imagine a bigger theme and character development, as well as romance, with the fairytale as the framework.

From Errol le Cain's 1978 adaptation of the tale (photo from Our Paper Moon)
Today you can win one of these Dancing Princess adaptations:

15. Showers of Books - Giveway and Blog Hop (US/CAN)

Thanks to I Am A Reader, Not A Writer & One a Day YA for hosting this blog hop.

Today we are giving away a signed copy of Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini!

From Goodreads:
Set on the island of Nantucket, STARCROSSED tells the tale of Helen Hamilton, a young woman whose destiny is forever altered when she meets Lucas Delos and tries to kill him in front of her entire high school. Which is terribly inconvenient, not only because Lucas is the most beautiful boy on the island, but also because Helen is so achingly shy she suffers physical pain whenever she is given too much attention.

Making matters worse, Helen is beginning to suspect she’s going crazy. Whenever she’s near Lucas or any member of his family she sees the ghostly apparitions of three women weeping bloody tears, and suffers the burden of an intense and irrational hate. She soon learns that she and Lucas are destined to play the leading roles in a Greek tragedy that the Three Fates insist on repeating over and over again throughout history. Like her namesake, Helen of Troy, she’s destined to start a war by falling in love. But even though Lucas and Helen can see their own star-crossed destiny, they’re still powerfully attracted to each other. Will they give up their personal happiness for the greater good, or risk it all to be together?
Rules:

1. You must be 13 years or older, or have a parent/guardian's permission to enter the giveaway since you will be giving out personal info such as an email address.

2. Use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter. Comments are always appreciated, but if you put your email address on your comment, it will be deleted!

3. Giveaway ends at the end of the day on April 25, 2012. Open to US and Canada only.

19. Young Adult Paranormal Activity - Giveaway Hop

Welcome to the Young Adult Paranormal Activity Giveaway Hop
February 24th to 28th
Hosted by vvb32reads &

This hop features giveaways of Paranormal Young Adult Books (ghost, werewolves, vampires, zombies, etc.) There are over 100 Blogs each hosting a great giveaway so scroll to the bottom of this long post to see the linky list of all the participating blogs.

Today we're giving away one of the Hex Hall books by Rachel Hawkins. They are witchy-good novels with a loveable protagonist. I love Sophie and her cast of friends (and some of her enemies, or "enemies", too). Best of all, they balance grim, doom-filled plot with pretty darn funny dialogue.

Also, aren't the covers gorgeous?

20. Hot Books Blog Hop - Giveaway

Hi everyone, and welcome to the Hot Books Blog Hop! RNSL Nite Lite is hosting our very first blog hop and it is an 18+ hop. With Valentine's Day right around the corner, we figured we'd give you something to warm the bed at night.

This hop runs from Feb 3-10, 2012 and signups for it will remain OPEN during the duration of the hop. We'd like to give everyone the chance to participate and are allowing signups even after the hop starts. So please tell your friends.

Up for grabs are some awesome, but slightly risqué YA books. I will pick two winners, and those winners each get to choose a book!

Ondine and The Autumn Palace by Ebony McKenna: So, a handsome prince is transformed into a ferret, and when that happens, his clothes tend to get (in)conveniently left behind...

R.A. Nelson's Throat: Don't worry, this isn't Twilight... Emma could rip Bella a new one--not that she would want to. She's a good girl, just a little... troubled.

23. Banned Books Week Hop - Giveaway

Thanks so much to Kathy at I Am A Reader, Not a Writer and Jen of I Read Banned Books for hosting this blog hop.

My co-bloggers Thuy (RNSL Nite Lite) and Kimberly (The Windy Pages) and I all agree -- book banning is the pits! While we understand and respect parents' concerns about what their kids encounter in their lives, we believe in everyone's "freadom" to read and enjoy whatever they want.

Speaking for just myself (my co-bloggers will chime in throughout the week) reading about "objectionable" things doesn't necessarily mean the reader becomes a bad person. There's a lot of nature and nurture that shapes a person's thoughts and actions, so I think laying the blame on "bad" books is a poor job of scapegoating. I believe reading expands the mind and helps to show us perspectives about our crazy world that we might not have discovered on our own. I also believe that reading is a safe way to help people form a mental scale for right vs. wrong and good vs. evil without putting themselves in the peril that books' heroes and heroines often find themselves facing. Most of all, I believe in the reader's right to choose what to read and what not to read--and that with some guidance, kids can learn to make the reading choices that are best for themselves.

You get to choose 1!

US/Canada only please... if you've already one a giveaway from me this year, please don't enter.

If you win I'll email asking which one you want (the center one is the Silver Phoenix paperback, the left and right ones are hardcovers of Silver Phoenix and the sequel, Fury of the Phoenix, both by Cindy Pon.)

25. Ondine Giveaway

Thanks to I am a Reader, Not a Writer for hosting this giveaway hop!

I am giving away a paperback copy of Ondine: The Summer of Shambles, by Ebony McKenna!

My blurb for Ondine: Girl meets ferret. Ferret speaks with Scottish accent. Hilarity ensues!

Really, Kimberly and I just about peed our pants laughing. Ondine is SO funny... I will be quoting jokes (particularly footnotes) forever.

By the way, there is a sequel to Ondine: The Autumn Palace. Also very funny and I can't wait to read more (please, Egmont UK, tell me there's more coming!)

If you have already won a prize from me this year, you're out of the running--let someone else win! XD

This contest is open Internationally anywhere bookdepository.com will mail.

If you are under 13 please get a parent's permission before sharing your email address.

The contest stops at the end of the day, Friday June 24th. I'll announce the winner sometime on Saturday after YA in Bloom.

Ready to enter? Fill out the form! Leaving a comment is nice, but won't enter you in the contest.

Don't forget to visit the rest of the umpteenmillion blogs participating in the hop!

Also YA Book Council is giving away an ARC of Andrea Cremer's WOLFSBANE. With, *gasp!* the original (and IMHO prettier) cover art... Enter to win! Winner will be announced July 1st, and you can get more entries by sending more people to the contest.
