Add a CommentI regret starting this review on a negative note, but it should be said that "Anime Fan Communities" is not the most accurately-titled book. Author Sandra Annett takes international anime fandom as her starting point, but she ends up engaging with a much wider range of topics.

Animation historians can sleep a little easier tonight. We now know that the rotoscope model for Superman in the classic Fleischer Studios shorts was a gentleman by the name of Karol Krauser. According to the Superman Homepage, Krauser was “best known as one of the Kalmikoff Brothers, Mad Russians, in the wrestling world of the 1950s and 1960s.” More info and photos of Krauser can be found on the Superman Homepage.
Here’s an example of the Krauser-inspired Superman:

Much loved indie band Wilco is back with a new video—their first in 12 years—which doubles as a new Popeye cartoon. Directed by Darren Romanelli and art directed by Frank Caruso, the video recalls the classic Fleischer Bros. animation.
The band has a rather elaborate website for the video, with comics (by Caruso and Ned Sontagg), spinach and more. Plus, animated Nels Cline—you cannot lose.
Max and Dave Fleischer (and animator Dick Heumer) explain it all in this 1928 classic cartoon.
If you had to recommend one cartoon for the world to see before we all perish – what would it be?
