1. Out and About at the Wild, Wild Midwest Conference

This will be a short post because I'm busy preparing to attend the SCBWI Wild, Wild Midwest Conference. In fact, I've written this post in advance and scheduled it to publish right about the time I'll be hitting the road. :-)

For those of you unfamiliar with SCBWI, it stands for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, the premier organization for those interested in writing and/or illustrating for children. SCBWI holds two national conventions every year., The summer conference, held in Los Angeles, will be Aug. 2-5 this year, and the winter conference, held in New York, will be Feb. 21-23, 2014. (Click here to see photos from last year's winter conference.) I've never been able to attend either of these events, except virtually, via the official SCBWI conference blog, so I'm especially excited to participate in this weekend's Midwest conference. I'm hoping it will be the first of many.

Speaking of SCBWI, congratulations to all the winners of the SCBWI Crystal Kite Member Choice awards, which were announced this week. If you're not familiar with this award, you can see the list of winners on the SCBWI website and read about how they were chosen. And for more children's publishing news, be sure to check out the official SCBWI blog.

In other good news, I've found a new home for the Girls Write! summer camps I taught at the Hinsdale Center for the Arts for nine years. (Sadly, HCA closed last year due to lack of funding.) The camps will now be held at the Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook, Illinois. If you know any budding girl writers who live in the area, please help spread the word. The camp for girls entering grades 4-5 will meet June 24-June 28, 9:30 am–noon and for those entering grades 6-8 will meet July 15-July 19, 9:30 am–noon. For details, see the right sidebar on this page of my website.

Finally, don't forget: there's still time to enter our blogiversary giveaway for a chance to win one of four $25 gift cards to Anderson's Bookshops. See this post for details.

After you've entered, hop on over to Elizabeth Steinglass's blog for this week's Poetry Friday round-up.

Happy writing!
Carmela

3. Kudos – Opportunity – Vote

parenting%20march%202013Christine Brower-Cohen sent me this good news and nice note today. I thought I would share it with you:

A while ago you advised blog readers to find a niche and try getting published in a national parenting magazine to build an audience with moms. Well, I followed your advice and my first article in a national parenting magazine appears in the March 2013 issue of Parenting- School Years edition. I’ve also sold them a second article to be published at a future date, and am currently researching a third piece for them. Thank you for this great advice. For more info on the article which appears in the current issue, click the link to my blog below post below:

Illustrator Russ Cox, who was featured this year on Illustrator Saturday has been hired by Island Port Press to illustrate author Lynn Plourde book ”Merry Moosey Christmas” that is slated for release in 2014. Read the full release here: http://www.islandportpress.com/news.html.

Simone1You have the unique opportunity to have a one hour critique consultation with an experienced children’s book editor, Simone Kaplan at Picture Book People. Simone had a deal that I missed sharing with you, so I asked her if she would extend her $50 off a critique consultation with the visitors to my blog. She said she would extend it for a week to anyone using the Coupon Code KathyTemean. Simone has two decades of insider experience at Henry Holt and Company and HarperCollins Publishers during which she’s personally accepted, edited and rejected hundreds of children’s picture books. She knows, from beginning to end, how the words and pictures of your manuscript can jump off the page. You’ll find out where your manuscript is, where it should be and how you can best get there and spark the interest of an editor or agent.

To take advantage of this offer, simply use this link: http://bit.ly/XJu3HJ and the coupon code: KathyTemean March 1st to March 8th to receive your discount or LOVE2013 if you do it today Feb. 28th.

Below are the books that were published in 2012 in the Atlantic Region (Pennsylvania/Delaware/New Jersey/Wash DC/Virginia/West Virginia/Maryland) Note: I listed all the books for the Atlantic Region, because the list is very impressive and it should give you inspiration to keep moving forward. Just imagine how long the list would be if I had the time to list all the regions. There are a lot of picture books on this list, so things are looking up in that area, too.

6. Kudos – Contest Winners!

Betsy Davany e-mailed me yesterday to let me know she won the New Voices in Children’s Literature: Tassy Walden Award for her middle grade manuscript titled, Savannah’s Mountain

She was quite excited, because ever since the news broke yesterday she has had newspapers and editors contacting her about the win.  We are quite excited too for Betsy.  Even though Betsy lives in Connecticut, she really is a New Jersey member and belongs with us, well at least that is how we feel.

New Voices in Children’s Voices in Children’s Literature: Tassy Walden Awards program is sponsored byEvergreen Woods and Barnes & Noble with additional support from Helen H. and J. Sanford Davis. The Tassy Walden Awards ceremony is scheduled for May 18, 2011. It will be held at the Blackstone Memorial Library, Branford, CT at 7pm and is free and open to the public. So if you live in the area, it should be enjoyable to attend and hear the winners read selections from their manuscripts.

Betsy says, “Savannah’s story started as a first page, read at the very first SCBWI event I attended. Kathy Temean took me under her wing and encouraged me to sign up for the March 2007 Mentor Weekend. When she told me there would be a first page session, I decided to venture away from writing picture books to follow the voice of Savannah, an eleven-year-old girl. The writing caught the attention of the two editors present, one asked me to send her the first fifty pages of the novel. At that time, only the one page existed. Guided by belief in the work, and with much patience from the editor, I completed fifty pages, and then went on to finish writing Savannah’s story. The novel is currently with several editors at this time.”

In case you didn’t notice.  The Crystal Kite Awards were announced this week.  New Jersey had two members make the finals, but they were up against some stiff competition with the winning book.  I’d like to point out how valuable it is to win this contest.  I already have ordered four of the winning books.  Books I would have not thought to order.  Isn’t that what an author wants?  I think, “Yes.”  So don’t stick your nose up or take for granted these contests.  They can really make things happen for you.  I have listed three regions below:

Pennsylvania/Delaware/New Jersey/Wash DC/Virginia/West Virginia/Maryland
Kathryn D. Erskine
– Mockingbird   (Philomel Books – Penguin Young Readers Group)

This Tree Counts! Alison Ashley Formento

Alison Ashley Formento is the author of This Tree Counts!, This Tree, 1, 2, 3 and in 2012, These Bees Count! (Albert Whitman & Co.).  She has written several plays, short stories and poetry and was a co-writer of the romance/thriller, Pandora. Alison has written for several national publications including The New York Times, The Writer and Parenting.  She’s a proud member of the SCBWI and the KidLit Authors Club. Besides writing about trees, Alison enjoys climbing them, too, and dreams of living in her own magic tree house. Alison visits schools and libraries across the country, sharing her writing and books with kids and donates a portion of her book sales to AmericanForests.org to help plant more trees. www.alisonashleyformento.com

It was when I started reading picture books to my children that I felt compelled to write and submit my work to magazine and book publishers. I spent endless hours on the internet and at the library learning everything I could about writing. It wasn’t long before I joined the Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators. After I attended my first writing conference, I was hooked. Okay, I became obsessed!

It was only a few months after I started writing that I received my first acceptance. I was thrilled to find out that Babybug magazine was going to publish my poem, Playground Fun.

I write every day and I’m always working on something new while polishing so
